Plateau: LG boss tasks citizens on hard work, commitment to development

Mangu (Plateau state), March 18, 2020 (NAN) Mr Lawrence Danat, Chairman, Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau has charged citizens to work  hard and get committed  to the development of the area.

The Chairman gave the charge on Wednesday in Mangu,  while receiving  an award from a publishing firm- Royal Publicity Publishers Company at  the legislative chamber of the council.

News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the publishing company conferred on the chairman the “Best Council Chairman in Infrastructure Development in Plateau State.”

Danat maintained that the task of development required the contribution of all citizens through hard work and sacrifice.

“Although times are hard, we can transform this Local Government through hard work, dedication and commitment to whatever we are doing.

“The award conferred on me today is a confirmation of prudent management of the council’s lean resources in line with the zero tolerance to corruption policy of the APC government at all levels,” he said.

Danat, who dedicated the award to the people of Mangu LGA for their support to his administration, thanked the legislative arm and other stakeholders for their cooperation in piloting the affairs of the area.

He expressed optimism that Mangu Local Government  would experience more infrastructure development before his tenure ends.

Earlier, Mohamed Bilal, leader of the organisation based in Abuja presented the award to the chairman.

Bilal explained that the award was the organisation’s way of challenging public office holders to serve their people better.

He said that the award was a result of a thorough research by a Research Team on the performance of council chairmen in Plateau State, saying the team “discovered that Mangu LGC performed best in projects execution.” (NAN)

Buhari urges ASUU to rescind strike call over IPPIS

Awka, March 12, 2020 (NAN) President Muhammadu Buhari has called on the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to rescind its decision on the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS) and the 14-day warning strike .

Buhari made the call in a message to the 14th convocation of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University (NAU) in Awka on Thursday.

The president, whose address was read by Prof. Rasheed Abubakar, the Executive Secretary of National Universities Commission (NUC), said that the IPPIS was in their own best interest.

According to him, the IPPIS was not intended to trample upon university autonomy nor was it designed to subsume universities into the civil service.

He urged them to suspend the warning strike in the interest of students and generality of Nigerians.

Buhari congratulated graduates of the university and urged them to use their skills to contribute their quota to national development.

He also congratulated two Anambra business moguls, Chief Innocent Chukwuma of Innoson Group of Companies and Dr Daniel Chukwudozie, Chairman Dozzy Group of companies who were conferred with honorary doctorate degrees by the university.

The president praised the award recipients for their contributions toward the growth of the nation.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the third awardee at the convocation was the deposed Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi who was absent at the event.

Prof. Charles Esimone, the Vice-Chancellor of the universityUNIZIK, in an address said that the 14th convocation witnessed conferment of 7,650 first degrees, 1,954 post graduate diplomas, 610 Masters Degree, and 339 doctorate degrees.

Chukwuma and Chuwkudozie, in their separate remarks, promised to partner the management of the university in the upgrade of the engineering faculty of the school.

Chukwudozie on his part said he would meet with the management of the institution to know areas of needing assistance.

NAN reports that Gbong Qwom Jos, Dr Jacob Gyang Buba, and Chancellor of the university attended the ceremony among other scores of notable Nigerians. (NAN)

Lagos, Feb. 23, 2020 (NAN) Prof. Umar Danbatta, Executive Vice Chairman, Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), on Saturday in Lagos received a Special Recognition Award for his contribution to the growth of digital space in Nigeria.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Danbatta was honoured at the 2020 GAGE Awards which celebrated excellence in areas of entertainment, information, inspiration, innovation and business.

NAN reports that GT Bank won the Banking App of the Year award, while Airtel received Best Data Service Provider of the Year award in the 22 categories GAGE Awards held at Eko Hotels, Victoria Island, Lagos.

Among other award recipients were Oyeka Akuma, who bagged Entrepreneur of the Year award: Jumia.com – Website of the Year; Segun Awosanya – Online Person of the Year, while Kiki Mordi received Online Film and Documentary award for her “Sex for Grades” documentary.

The Convener of the GAGE Awards, Mr Johnson Anorh, said the event was a comprehensive celebration of outstanding individuals and brands who had positively impacted lives by leveraging on the power of the Internet.

“Gage award will be selecting from wealth of talent and professionals within the Nigerian and African digital ecosystem annually.

“The Africa digital science is emerging and celebrating digital ingenuity will only help raise the standard of how things are currently which in turn will be beneficial and improve quality service delivery to all.

“It will also fasttrack the pace of development and attract new talents. These key points are the objective of the Gage awards as it seeks to make African digital scene, the focus of the world,” Anorh said.

Speaking on behalf of the awardees, Abraham Oshadami, NCC Head of  Information Technology, who represented Danbatta, said the Commission would continue to improve in all areas of its services to sustain excellence.

“ A recognition like this ,is for us to put more efforts than we have always done,” he said.(NAN)

Abuja, Dec. 10. 2018 (NAN) A 13-man National Selection Committee has been inaugurated and given four days to submit names of deserving corps members for the 2017 President’s National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Honours Award.
Inaugurating the committee in Abuja on Monday, the NYSC Director-General, Maj.-Gen. Suleiman Kazaure, charged them to approach the process dispassionately and improve on existing standards.
Kazaure said that the management of the scheme expects the committee to emerge with candidates who by every standard would be acceptable to all.
He said that he was optimistic the committee would deliver on the mandate given to it.
“As the highest body saddled with the evaluation of the performance and selection of corps members for the award, this committee is expected to improve on the standards set already.
“As you embark on this round of selection process, I implore you to approach the task dispassionately. This is because management expects the emergence of candidates who by every standard will be acceptable to all.
“As you may be aware, the President’s NYSC honours award was instituted in 1974 as a way of encouraging corps members to contribute to the overall national development by embarking on community development projects.
“The award is also to serve as motivation for hard work and reward for excellence among corps members. Since its commencement, the award has had numerous recipients.
“Community development service remains one of the major areas where the scheme has recorded remarkable success.
“The good image of the scheme is soaring partly due to corps members activities and involvement in the areas of infrastructure, education, healthcare delivery and agriculture in many rural communities across the country,” Kazaure said.
Mr Abdulrasheed Sanusi, the NYSC Director, Corps Welfare and Inspectorate, said that the selection process was in three stratas; namely local government, state and national selection committees.
Sanusi assured that in order to ensure a smooth and hitch-free national selection exercise, the department has conducted due diligence and verified claims from state secretariats to forestall novelty and frivolities.
According to the director, on the spot assessment of the projects were carried out and briefs have been prepared on each corps member to support the citations forwarded by the state secretariates.
“It is therefore, the duty of the national selection committee to meticulously assess the nominees and select diamonds from other pearls using the set criteria.
“The committee has been given four days to present their final selection of corps members to be given the awards. The preliminary work is almost done and the selection committee is here to ensure that our final selection shows objectivity.
“We have put together certain criteria to ensure objectivitiy in the selection of award winners and very soon the award ceremony will be done.’’
Prof. Angela Miri, the Chairman of the Committee and Vice Chancellor, Federal University, Lokoja, assured that the committee would ensure transparency and objectivity in the process.
Miri said that the committee would work hard and sieve through all the names previously selected and submitted at the local, state and national levels and come up with truly deserving corps members to receive the honours award.
The vice chancellor listed some of the criteria given to the committee to use for selection to include corps members who have diligently carried out community development service, completed them and have been assessed.
Other criteria include corps members whose community development projects have directly and positively impacted the communities in which they have served and those who were committed during the orientation course.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that members of the committee include two NYSC retired directors, a representative from the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF), and the Ministry of Youth and Sports Development.
The committee also comprises a representative from the National Council for Women Societies (NCWS), Nigeria Employers’ Consultative Association (NECA), Nigeria Police Force and the Nigerian Army.
Council of Heads of Polytechnics and Colleges of Technology in Nigeria, All Nigeria Confederation of Principals of Secondary Schools (ANCOPSS), as well as the Citizenship and Leadership Training Centre (CLT) are also represented in the committee. (NAN)

12 journalists receive WSCIJ awards for excellence

Abuja, Dec. 10, 2018 (NAN) The Wole Soyinka Centre for Investigative Journalism (WSCIJ) has given awards to12 journalists for their excellent publications in investigative journalism and furtherance of the profession.
Ms Motunrayo Alaka, the Coordinator of WSCIJ, said in a statement on Monday that the Wole Soyinka Awards for Investigative Reporting highlighted dangers journalists contended with in the course of discharging their responsibilities.
Alaka said that the136 entries received for this year’s award were from six categories – Print, Radio, Television, Photography, Online and Editorial Cartoon.
Abdulaziz Abdulaziz’s ‘The Kemi Adeosun expose’, published on Premium Times, won the Online category.
Premium Times’ Kemi Busari emerged the runner-up with the piece – ‘Investigation: The appalling, risky state of Nigeria’s multi-billion Naira nuclear technology centre’.
Oladeinde Olawoyin, also of Premium Times, was commended for his two-part story – ‘Investigation: Inside Nigeria’s Drivers’ Licence Fraud and How Officials Dupe Applicants’.
Mojeed Alabi emerged the winner of the print category for his two-part story, ‘Exposed! Nigeria’s Deputy Speaker In 1.1bn Water Contract Scam’, published in the New Telegraph on May 24 and May 25th May.
Mojeed is a second-time winner, having won the award in 2016.
He was also the runner-up for the category in 2017.
The piece – ‘FG’s school feeding programme: The truths, half-truths and outright lies’, saw Chinwe Agbeze of BusinessDay emerged the runner-up in the category.
Chinwe was commended in the same category in 2017.
In the photo category, Kolawole Aliu, a 2017 runner-up, won with his photo – ‘The Menace of Lagos State Task Force on People’, published in the Leadership Newspaper.
As there was no runner-up for the category.
Elliot Ovadje of The Nigerian Tribune was commended for his work, ‘Slums around us’, published in Saturday Tribune.
In the television category, Sharon Ijasan of Television Continental clinched the first prize for her story – ‘Funding basic education in Nigeria’.
Azeezat Olaoluwa, also of Television Continental, was the runner-up with her story, ‘Failing health sector: Pregnant women seek cheaper alternative’.
The television category did not have any work that was commended.
Chinelo Ozoalor of Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria in Enugu was the only journalist recognised for the radio category.
She won the category for her report – ‘NECO Paper Leak in Enugu’.
The judges did not find any entry suitable to win the editorial cartoon category.
Two journalists were commended for their editorial cartoons.
They are Cornelius Emenike of New Telegraph Newspaper for his editorial cartoon – ‘Allowances for Senators and governors’and Bennett Omeke for his editorial cartoon – ‘Corruption in NNPC’ published in the Punch Newspaper.
The winners, runners-up and the commended works got cash prizes of N200,000, N100,000 and N50,000, respectively in addition to a certificate of commendation.
The winners were also given plaques and will proceed on an all-expense-paid international study tour in 2019.
Mr Jiti Ogunye, the Board Secretary of WSCIJ, congratulated the category winners and the honorary award recipients for their feats.
He said that the award was being held annually on Dec. 9, the World Anti-Corruption Day and the eve of the Human Rights Day, to call attention to the significance of the media generally and investigative reporting in particular and attaining good governance, accountability and social justice.
For the honorary awards, John Momoh received the Lifetime Award for Journalistic Excellence for his over two-decade commitment to media excellence as evidenced by the success of Channels TV.
In his acceptance remark, Dr John Momoh, said that journalism practice in Nigeria was under attacks and commended the Wole Soyinka Centre for Investigative Journalism for the award.
Waziri Adio was conferred with the Anti-Corruption Defender Award for his consistent public stance against corruption evidenced by his efforts in championing transparency and accountability in Nigeria’s extractive sector.
Adio is the 10th recipient of the award.
Accepting the award, Adio said the struggle against corruption and those championing it could be seen as crazy.
He expressed delight in being in a company of people who blazed the anti-corruption path he is treading today.
He thanked his family for not making undue demands from him and his friends for supporting him.
Umaru Pate, the Chairman of 2018 Judges Board, applauded the finalists for the quality of their reports among the 136 other entries received across the six categories.
According to Pate, who is also a professor of Mass Communication, many of the entries depended on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) and other government agencies for information rather than those conceived by the reporters themselves.
Abdulaziz Abdulaziz was announced as the 2018 WSCIJ-Nigerian Investigative Reporter of the year.
He dedicated the award to the team at Premium Times whose inputs made the story and the award to happen.
He commended the courage of Nigerians who asked for action on the report.
Iyanuoluwa Bolarinwa of BudgIT read a statement from the Coalition of WSCIJ, Civic Hive and Gavel to ‘Stop suspect parade’ by the Nigerian Police and other security agents.
It was in reaction to a video that went viral on the social media on the parade of a woman for allegedly impersonating the wife of the President, Mrs Aisha Buhari.
He urged editors not to cover parade of suspects, referring to the practice as barbaric, unnecessary and a violation of fundamental human rights.
Human Rights Lawyer, Mr Femi Falana, said the practice had already been pronounced illegal in four rulings in different Nigerian courts.
In his closing remarks, Dapo Olorunyomi, the WSCIJ Founder, said there was never a time in the history of journalism when it was under more attacks than today.
He called for funding support and media ownership of the programme to ensure its sustainability. (NAN)

  1. President Muhammadu Buhari has called on the 123 State-Parties to the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court to support the court’s jurisdiction over serious cases of corruption and illicit financial flows by state actors.

 

The President made the call at The Hague in his speech to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the Rome Statute of the ICC.

 

The International Criminal Court was established twenty years ago as a global court, inspired by the Nuremberg trials of World War II war criminals, to hold people accountable for crimes against humanity, war crimes, crimes of genocide and aggression.

2. UN Deputy Secretary-General, Amina Mohammed, has commended Nigeria for issuing the world’s first fully-certified sovereign green bond, a N10.69 billion bond, also known as climate bond.

 

Mohammed, who gave the commendation at the launch of a book at the UN headquarters in New York, said Nigeria was the first African country to issue a certified sovereign green bond and the world’s fourth sovereign issuer of green bonds.

 

Green bonds are fixed income securities issued to finance projects that have positive impact on the environment.

3. The Federal Government says electricity generation from hydro sources could reach 19,000 megawatts once they are fully harnessed.

The Minister of Science and Technology, Mr Ogbonnaya Onu, who stated this, said Nigeria required a minimum of 160, 000 megawatts of electricity but currently generated only 7, 000 megawatts.

4. The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) says it has rescued 468 victims of human trafficking in the last six months.

NAPTIP’s Command in Benin Zone said that about 30 suspected human traffickers were arrested; two were convicted, while 33 cases were still pending in various courts within the period.

5. The Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has received the maiden Blueprint Newspaper award for his contributions to rail development and building of the first monorail system in Sub-Saharan Africa.

7 states receive awards for improving service delivery in water sector

Abuja, July 3, 2018 (NAN) Bauchi, Cross River, Delta, Enugu, Kaduna, Lagos and Taraba states have received the “Waterman Award’’ for their efforts to improve service delivery in the water sector.

 

The states received the awards at the opening of the International Conference of the Nigerian Water Supply Association (NWSA) in Abuja on Tuesday for their efforts to expand the citizens’ access to potable water.

 

Mr Olusola Suulola, the Chairman of the Local Organising Committee of the conference, said that there could never be any meaningful development in the society without quality service delivery.

 

He, however, said that it was saddening to note that the water sector in the country had been facing some crises.

 

He underscored the need for state governments to exhibit political commitment in encouraging reform processes in the states’ water agencies.

 

Suulola said that poor data, dilapidated water infrastructure and inadequate funding were some of the challenges which ought to be tackled in efforts to improve Nigerians’ access to water supply.

 

The Deputy Governor of Taraba, Alhaji Haruna Manu, who responded on behalf of the seven states that received awards, commended NWSA for the award, saying that it would spur them to do more.

 

Manu said that one of the critical areas of intervention of Gov. Darius Ishaku’s administration in Taraba.

 

He said that the state had invested a lot of resources on water supply projects, adding that efforts were underway to provide water for over 200 communities across the state.

 

The Minister of Water Resources, Mr Suleiman Adamu, said that the critical challenges facing urban areas across the country included the dearth of sustainable basic services such as water supply and sanitation services.

 

“Available statistics in Nigeria indicate regression in the urban water services, as access to pipe-borne water regressed from 32 per cent in 1990 to 7 per cent in 2015.

 

“This is due to high rate of urbanisation, failing infrastructure, institutional weaknesses and far more importantly, low level of investment,’’ he added.

 

Adamu said that part of the Federal Government’s mission was the transformation of all water utilities into financially viable entities, as part of renewed efforts to tackle urban development problems and improve the socio-economic conditions of the country.

 

The minister said that the ministry had been supporting urban water supply and sanitation sector reforms since 2004.

 

He added that the support was through the approval of a National Action Plan on Water, Sanitation and Hygiene and the declaration of a state of emergency in the water and sanitation sector.

 

Adamu, nonetheless, expressed the hope that the conference would produce workable strategies that would strengthen stakeholders’ collaboration for the sustainable development of the nation’s water sector.

 

News Agency of Nigeria reports that the Nigerian Water Supply Association is an umbrella body of all operators in the country’s water supply sector.

 

The group makes contributions to policy negotiations at national, regional and international levels for institutional reforms in the water sector.

 

The theme of the conference is “Transforming Urban Water Supply and Sanitation Utilities into Financially Viable Entities”. (NAN)

Lafia, March 22, 2018 (NAN) The Northern Youths Council of Nigeria (NYCN) has invested a leadership award on Mr Bala Joshua, the Commandant, Nigerian Peace Corps (NPC), Nasarawa State command.
The council appreciated Joshua as an icon of nation building for promoting peace and embarking on youths oriented programmes.
Joshua told newsmen on Thursday in Lafia after receiving the award that he would continue to initiate positive policies and programmes that have direct bearing on the lives of youths and Nigeria at large.
He thanked the council for recognising his efforts at nation building, adding that the award will spur him to do more especially in the areas of youths and less privileged oriented programmes.
The commandant said that the organisation was established to ensure peaceful co-existence among Nigerians as well as to fight the high rate of unemployment among youths.
“Today, the Northern Youth Council of Nigeria conferred on me, Sir Ahmadu Bello Platinum Leadership Award as Garkuwan Matasan Arewa/Icon of Nation Building. I dedicate this award to my boss and all peace lovers in Nigeria.
“I don’t know how it come about, but I have received it in good faith with total humility and I promised to continue to initiate good policies and programmes that have direct bearing on the lives of Nigerians.
“I also thank the good effort of my mentor, Amb. Dr Dickson Akoh, for giving me and many others the platform to showcase our potentials toward impacting positively on the lives of youths.
According to him, “as I always said that assent to Peace Corps Bill would not only fight the high rate of unemployment in the country, but would also help the corps to synergise with other security agencies across the country in the area of conflict resolution strategy.
“The bill will also promote peaceful co-existence among Nigerians.’’
Joshua however advised youths and other Nigerians to always shun violence and embrace peace irrespective of their ethnic, religious and political affiliation for the overall development of the country.
Earlier, Mr Isa Abubakar, the NYCN President, said that they have decided to award the state’s commandant considering his contributions towards improving the lives of Nigerians.
Abubakar, represented by Mr Sabo Christopher, the state Coordinator of the organisation said that the commandant had performed credibly well in the areas of peace promotion, empowerment of youths and less privileged in the society.
The president of the council also said that the commandant had distinguished himself by keying into people oriented programmes, adding that the award was given based on assessment.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) gathered that apart from community and health services, the corps offered financial assistance to orphans and patients.
The corps also paid WAEC and school fees for orphans as well as fines for the release of over 11 inmates, among other humanitarian interventions.
NAN recalls that the corps in the state spent N5.5 million to register and train 200 Nasarawa youths on online business transaction on Jan. 4, to empower them economically. (NAN)

Lagos, June 17, 2017 (NAN) Dr Edward Nkwegu, Governorship candidate of the Labour Party in Ebonyi in the 2015 election,  has been presented the prestigious African Child Prize Award 2017 for Leadership in Development of the African Child for meritorious activities in children and women empowerment.

The award was conferred to him on Friday, at a dinner to commemorate the 2017 International Day of the African Child, organised by an NGO, the African Child Foundation, in Lagos.

The theme was :”The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development for Children in Africa:Accelerating Protection, Empowerment and Equal Opportunity “.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that annually, June 16 is observed as the Day of the African Child.

It was first established by the Organisation of the African Unity in 1991 and aims at raising awareness for the situation of children in African, as well as on the need for continuing improvement in education.

It also encouraged people’s spirit of abundance to share something special with a child in Africa.

Speaking with NAN, Nkwegu said that Nigerians should develop more passion toward alleviating poverty and empowering children and women amongst their units.

According to him, the impact will be sustainable development in the society.

“When you empower women and children, you are developing future generation to come because, children are the future of any society.

“”When you empower women, you empower the society because they are more stable in terms of taking care of children.

“Women are known to be more reliable, better in training children, industrious and determined.

“So, when a woman is empowered, you are doing same to her children and the society; the African Child should be nurtured and celebrated because a lot of positive talent reside in them”

He said, ” Every child has his or her own peculiar talent.

“An enabling environment ensures that this is identified and nurtured;as such the parameters to enable the best African and in particular, Nigerian child to soar, should be put in place.

“Education , Good nutrition, security , availability of basic infrastructure, access to health care and skills acquisition opportunities are important; also, mentoring and love and care are critical to the full development of the African Child, ” he said.

Nkwegu urged parents to be more committed to bringing up their children and wards, rather than shifting the task to teachers ,nannies and domestic helps.

Mr Owosakponome Donaldson, representative of the NGO in Nigeria said: “There is need to create an atmosphere for the protection of the African Child.

“There is also need to ensure zero tolerance for child abuse; we say no to child labour.

“Today, we honour some individuals and corporate organisations that have added value to the African Child.

NASCO CEO gets students’ award for outstanding corporate responsibility

Jos, April 20, 2017(NAN) Dr. Attia Nasredin, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Jos-based NASCO Group of Companies, on Thursday received an award of honour from the National Association of Nigerian Students(NANS).

NANS’ Director of Media and Publicty, Mr Michael Oyewole, who presented the award in Jos, said that it was in recognition of the company’s “outstanding performance in the area of corporate social responsibility to host communities”.

Oyewole said that the company had contributed immensely to the lives of the people, especially in the areas of education and healthcare.

He said that the company had given out 5000 treated mosquito nets to residents of Jos South, Riyom and Barkin -Ladi Local Government areas.

“The company has also constructed various pedestrian bridges within Jos-Bukuru metropolis to curtail the incidence of accidents encountered by pedestrians while crossing the roads,” he added.

Oyewole revealed that the company had also constructed many classroom blocks in St. John Vianey Seminary in Barkin-ladi, and also constructed a student’s hall at the Jos campus of the Plateau State Polytechnic.

He further disclosed that the company had empowered youths in Anglo-Jos, to encourage them to be self-reliant.

Nasreddin, in a response, thanked the students for recognising and appreciating the company’s contribution to the host communities, and advised them to shun all forms of corruption and work toward a better Nigeria.

He urged Nigerians to patronise Made-in-Nigeria goods so as to encourage local industries and shore up internally generated revenue. (NAN)
