Bayern Munich and upstarts Saarbrucken reach German Cup semi-finals

Munich (Germany), March 3, 2020 (Reuters/NAN) Holders Bayern Munich laboured into the German Cup semi-finals with a 1-0 win at Schalke 04 on Tuesday.

Also, Saarbrucken became the first fourth division side to reach the last four of the German Cup with a penalty kicks shootout win over Fortuna Duesseldorf.

Bayern Munich, who are aiming for a milestone 20th Cup triumph, were made to work hard by Schalke 04.

The home team missed several chances either side of Joshua Kimmich’s 40th-minute winner.

Schalke 04 striker Guido Burgstaller hit the crossbar and then had a goal ruled out for a marginal offside before Kimmich volleyed home from the edge of the penalty area.

The home team’s forward Rabbi Matondo missed a sitter with a feeble close range shot in the 64th minute after a fast break.

Bayern Munich were forced to hang on in the closing stages as Schalke 04 piled on the pressure.

Saarbrucken knocked out top-tier opponents Fortuna Duesseldorf in the day’s opening fixture as they won the penalty kicks shootout 7-6, with the absorbing contest ending 1-1 after normal and extra time.

Goalkeeper Daniel Batz was Saarbrucken’s hero as he saved five penalty kicks, one in normal time and four in the shootout, to send his side through.

The feat sparked wild celebrations among the jubilant home fans.

Midfielder Tobias Janicke fired Saarbrucken ahead in the 31st minute with a neat finish.

However, Mathias Jorgensen levelled with a late header to force extra time after Batz had kept out a Rouwen Hennings penalty kick.

Fortuna Duesseldorf missed two chances to win the shootout as Batz denied Kevin Stoger and Matthias Zimmermann and then saved Jorgensen’s spot-kick after Janicke had drilled in Saarbrucken’s final penalty kick.

In the other two quarter-finals, Bayer Leverkusen entertain Union Berlin and Eintracht Frankfurt are at home to Werder Bremen on Wednesday.(Reuters/NAN)

Bayern Munich whip Chelsea 3-0 for sweet revenge

London, Feb. 25, 2020 (Reuters/NAN) Two second half goals in less than three minutes from Serge Gnabry and one from Robert Lewandowski earned Bayern Munich a thumping 3-0 victory at Chelsea in their UEFA Champions League fixture.

The last 16 first leg game on Tuesday in London saw the German champions sharper and livelier than their hosts, and they piled on the pressure from the start of the match.

The stats showed they enjoyed 63 per cent possession, and it was a bad night for Chelsea, whose home form under Frank Lampard has been suspect all season.

Their misery was complete in the 83rd minute when wing back Marcos Alonso was sent off for violent conduct after he caught Lewandowski in the face with his arm.

For former Arsenal forward Gnabry, his goals on Tuesday were his fifth and sixth in London in the Champions League this season.

He scored four in Bayern Munich’s 7-2 demolition of Tottenham Hotspur in the group stages.

The first against Chelsea in the 51st minute involved a one-two between Gnabry and Lewandowski.

The prolific Pole cut back from the edge of the area when Chelsea’s retreating defence expected him to shoot, and it left Gnabry with an easy finish from less than 10 metres.

Chelsea, run ragged most of the evening, had barely got their breath back when Lewandowski and Gnabry exchanged passes halfway down the pitch before Gnabry raced away to score.

Lewandowski, clearly enjoying himself, got among the scorers in the 76th minute after a stirring run from Canadian full back Alphonso Davies.

The Germans had also wasted a series of chances in the first half.

Thomas Mueller, one of three players who figured in Chelsea’s 2012 Champions League final victory over Bayern in Munich, went closest in the 35th minute.

He thumped the bar with a header from another Lewandowski cross.

Tuesday’s win will prove a measure of revenge for that unlikely Chelsea victory.

Bundesliga: Lewandowski strikes again as Bayern Munich outclass Borussia Dortmund

Munich (Germany), Nov. 9, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) Champions Bayern Munich crushed fellow title contenders Borussia Dortmund 4-0 on Saturday with two goals from top scorer Robert Lewandowski.

The victory helped Bayern climb back into third place and give interim coach Hansi Flick an impressive Bundesliga debut.

Lewandowski kept up his sensational scoring run, netting in the 17th and 76th minutes to take his league tally to 16 goals.

He has now scored in each of the 11 league games this season, a Bundesliga record.

Serge Gnabry was also on target as was Dortmund defender Mats Hummels who capped a disastrous performance by the visitors with an 80th-minute own goal.

Bayern move up to 21 points, third on goal difference behind RB Leipzig, 4-2 winners at Hertha Berlin.

UCL: Bayern seal last-16 berth with win over Olympiakos

Munich (Germany), Nov. 6, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) Bayern Munich clinched their place in the Champions League last 16 by beating Olympiakos 2-0 at home on Wednesday thanks to second-half strikes from Robert Lewandowski and Ivan Perisic.

Playing their first game since coach Niko Kovac was sacked after the humiliating 5-1 drubbing at Eintracht Frankfurt, Bayern out-played the Greek champions and Lewandowski finally broke the deadlock in the 69th minute.
The Polish striker prodded home a cross from Kingsley Coman from close range to score his 21st goal of the season in all competitions.
He thus set interim boss Hansi Flick on the way to victory in his first game since being put in temporary charge.

Croatian winger Perisic slammed the ball home with his first touch less than 60 seconds after coming off the bench to seal the win.

Bayern top Group B with 12 points from four games and will be confirmed as group winners if Red Star Belgrade’s match with Tottenham Hotspur later on Wednesday ends in a draw. (Reuters/NAN)

Hoffenheim shock Bayern Munich with Adamyan double

Munich (Germany), Oct. 5, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) Hoffenheim’s Sargis Adamyan scored his first two Bundesliga goals to stun hosts Bayern Munich 2-1 on Saturday and earn his side their maiden win in Munich.

The 26-year-old Armenian striker scored either side of a Robert Lewandowski goal as Bayern Munich suffered their first league loss.

They have thus crashed back down to reality four days after their 7-2 demolition of Tottenham Hotspur in London in the UEFA Champions League.

Bayern Munich’s first home defeat in 12 months left the title race wide open with the multiple German champions remaining on top with 14 points.

They are ahead on goal difference of Freiburg, who drew 2-2 with Borussia Dortmund, and RB Leipzig and Bayer Leverkusen, who drew 1-1.

Schalke 04 conceded a stoppage time equaliser through Jonas Hector to draw 1-1 with Cologne and miss the chance to go top of the table.

Schalke 04, who ended a four-game winning streak in the league, are also on 14 points.

Borussia Moenchengladbach, on 13 points, take on Augsburg on Sunday and will go top with a win.

Hoffenheim had a golden chance after four minutes in Munich but Adamyan, who joined this season from second division Regensburg, hesitated in his one-on-one with goalkeeper Manuel Neuer.

It allowed Jerome Boateng to clear at the last moment.

Bayern Munich did not come near their midweek European form.

Apart from some good chances in the first half, they never showed the kind of clinical finishing that saw them fire seven goals past Tottenham.

Adamyan made amends in the 54th minute when he fired in from a tight angle to surprise Neuer, after Corentin Tolisso had lost possession in his own half.

Lewandowski grabbed his 11th goal of the campaign with a well-timed header after Bayern Munich upped the pressure in search of an equaliser.

Adamyan, however, crowned his first start for Hoffenheim with his second Bundesliga goal in the 79th minute.

This was after he beat Neuer once more with a low shot, to give his team their first win in Munich and their first three points since late August.

Schalke 04 thought they had won their game when Suat Serdar nodded in at the far post in the 75th minute.

But, like their Ruhr valley rivals Borussia Dortmund earlier on Saturday, they failed to hang on to their lead.

Schalke 04’s Guido Burgstaller hit the post in the 88th minute but it was Cologne who scored with Hector’s header in stoppage time for a deserved equaliser.

Gnabry hits four as Bayern Munich trounce Tottenham 7-2

London, Oct. 2, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) Tottenham Hotspur suffered their worst home defeat in Europe as Serge Gnabry scored four times in Bayern Munich’s 7-2 romp to seize control of UEFA Champions League Group B on Tuesday.

Master marksman Robert Lewandowski also scored twice as Bayern responded to going behind in devastating fashion

When Son Heung-min gave last season’s runners-up Tottenham a deserved 12th minute lead, the home fans were buoyant.

But their hopes were crushed as Spurs leaked in seven goals at home for the first time in any major competition.

To make matters worse for Mauricio Pochettino’s shell-shocked side, it was Gnabry, a former Arsenal player, who was the architect of their humiliation.

In a rip-roaring start to the first clash between the sides for 35 years, Son had twice wasted guilt-edge opportunities before firing Tottenham in front.

But Tottenham’s lead lasted only three minutes as Joshua Kimmich’s superb long-range effort gave Hugo Lloris no chance.

Tottenham were still posing a threat in a wide-open game but three Bayern Munich goals in 10 minutes left their hopes of a first win in Group B in tatters.

Lewandowski has already bagged 10 goals in six Bundesliga games this season and showed why he is one of the world’s most-feared strikers as he beat Lloris with a shot on the turn seconds before the half-time.

If that was a cruel blow for Tottenham, what happened in the opening minutes of the second half was crushing.

Gnabry, who suffered several frustrating years at Arsenal, shredded Tottenham’s defence in the 53rd minute to score a breathtaking solo goal and struck again two minutes later.

Harry Kane’s penalty kick restored some hope for Tottenham on the hour after Danny Rose was adjudged to have been fouled.

But Bayern Munich were in ruthless mood.

Gnabry completed his hat-trick in the 83rd minute, racing on to Thiago Alcantara’s long ball and then wrong-footing Lloris with a classy finish.

With the home fans flooding towards the exits and Bayern Munich’s followers joyfully singing “football’s coming home”, the visitors piled on the agony.

Lewandowski was played in by Philippe Coutinho and he finished in deadly fashion.

With Tottenham’s defence AWOL again, Gnabry put Niko Kovac’s team in seventh heaven.

Bayern Munich lead Group B with six points from two games, with Tottenham on one.

Bundesliga: Bayern Munich edge Paderborn 3-2 to go top, Leipzig slip up

Berlin, Sept. 28, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) Wasteful Bayern Munich were made to sweat for a 3-2 win at Paderborn that sent them top of the Bundesliga on Saturday.

The climb on the table came after RB Leipzig went down 3-1 at home to Schalke 04 for their first loss of the season.

Bayern squandered a bagful of chances, hit the woodwork and conceded two goals in the second half in an inconsistent performance that put a damper on their league lead.

The Bavarians went in front through Serge Gnabry in the 15th minute after a sensational start that saw them hit the post and create chance after chance.

Remarkably top scorer Robert Lewandowski managed to somehow miss a completely open goal from 10 metres, firing wide.

Gnabry then set up Philippe Coutinho 10 minutes after the restart for their second goal but instead of scoring again it was the hosts who came alive with Kai Proeger’s powerful volley in the 68th.

Lewandowski got on the scoresheet with his 10th league strike when he chipped keeper Jannik Huth in the 80th to restore their two-goal cushion.

But a sensational 30-metre missile from Jamilu Collins four minutes later renewed the hosts’ hopes and set up a nervous finale.

Bayern are top on 14 points, one ahead of Leipzig who were caught on 13 by Schalke in third after a fourth straight win.

Schalke went ahead with a powerful Salif Sane header in the 29th and doubled their lead through Amine Harit two minutes from halftime.

Rabbi Matondo’s solo effort essentially killed off the game with Emil Forsberg grabbing Leipzig’s 200th league goal seven minutes from time.

Schalke and Leipzig were joined on 13 points by Borussia Moenchengladbach, 3-0 winners at Hoffenheim, and Bayer Leverkusen, who beat Augsburg by the same score.

Bundesliga: Lewandowski double helps Bayern Munich crush Cologne to go top

Berlin, Sept. 21, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) Bundesliga top scorer Robert Lewandowski scored twice to equal a 51-year-old record as champions Bayern Munich demolished Cologne 4-0 on Saturday to climb to the top spot of the standings.

Poland striker Lewandowski grabbed the first two goals.

And, after Cologne’s Kingsley Ehizibue was sent off, Philippe Coutinho converted a penalty to make it 3-0 and Ivan Perisic completed the rout with a low shot.

Lewandowski, who has been Bundesliga top scorer four times in the last six seasons, has now netted nine times in the opening five league matches.
He thus equalled a record set by Borussia Moenchengladbach’s Peter Mayer in the 1967-68 season.

Bayern are top on 11 points with RB Leipzig, on 10, facing Werder Bremen later on Saturday.

Lewandowski double rescues draw for Bayern Munich in Bundesliga season opener

Munich (Germany), Aug. 16, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski scored twice to save the champions’ blushes as they had to come from behind to rescue a 2-2 draw against Hertha Berlin in the Bundesliga season opener on Friday.

Last season’s league top scorer Lewandowski opened his account in the 24th minute, sliding in to complete a move he started himself.

He thus became the first player to score on five consecutive season opening games.

But the visitors stunned the home crowd with two goals in three minutes.

First with a deflected shot from Dodi Lukebakio, who had scored a hat-trick in Munich while playing for Fortuna Duesseldorf last season.

Then they had a second, with Marko Grujic charging through for a stunning turnaround in the 39th.

Lewandowski’s penalty on the hour rescued a point for the hosts.

Sancho stars as Borussia Dortmund down toothless Bayern Munich to win German Super Cup

Dortmund (Germany), Aug. 3, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) Jadon Sancho starred for Borussia Dortmund on Saturday to help his side beat rivals Bayern Munich 2-0 to win their sixth DFL Super Cup and claim early bragging rights in the curtain raiser for the German Bundesliga.

The teenager was the key man, assisting one goal and scoring the other in front of the Dortmund faithful against a Bayern side looking a little lost without departed greats Franck Ribery and Arjen Robben.

Lucien Favre’s side tailed off in last season’s title challenge, finishing runners-up to Bayern who clinched a record 29th league trophy and the DFB Pokal.

However, they showed their determination to put that right, captain Marco Reus forcing a diving save from Manuel Neuer in the very first minute.

Neuer was then lucky to not be beaten or force the referee to show him a red card when he ran out halfway into his own half after 15 minutes to dive at Paco Alcacer.

The Dortmund striker knocked the ball past the goalkeeper, but it trickled past the open goal.

Alcacer made amends for his miss shortly after halftime.

Sancho dazzled the opposition with his footwork on the right before teeing up the Spanish striker on the edge of the box who found the bottom right corner.

Some last ditch defending stopped Bayern from equalising 10 minutes later, with Kingsley Coman, Thomas Muller and Robert Lewandowski all denied from close range in a matter of seconds.

But it was Sancho who stole the show, doubling Dortmund’s lead after collecting the ball and sprinting from almost the halfway line to slot it expertly past Neuer.

Bayern tried to find openings but were unable to find a way past a stubborn yellow wall, which will this season feature Mats Hummels after his return from Munich.

The veteran defender was not able to face his former side due to a knock in training.

For Niko Kovac’s men, the result was a reminder that they have areas in their squad to improve.
And they  will no doubt increase their efforts to land young winger and long term target Leroy Sane from Manchester City.

Dortmund, meanwhile, go some way to make up for their 5-0 capitulation to Bayern in April and go into the new Bundesliga season buoyed by winning the first silverware of the campaign. (Reuters/NAN)
