Neymar sent off as shaky PSG beat Bordeaux in Ligue 1

Paris, Feb. 24, 2020 (Reuters/NAN) Paris St-Germain (PSG) extended their Ligue 1 lead to 13 points with a 4-3 home victory against Girondins de Bordeaux on Sunday.

But it was a match in which the French champions were again exposed at the back and had Neymar sent off.

A Marquinhos double, Edinson Cavani’s 200th PSG goal and a goal by Kylian Mbappe put the capital side on 65 points from 26 games.

But they lost team captain Thiago Silva to a muscle injury and Neymar picked up a straight red card for a late challenge in stoppage time.

Bordeaux, who scored through Hwang Ui-jo, Pablo and Ruben Pardo, are 12th on 35 points.

Third-placed Stade Rennais beat visiting Nimes 2-1 earlier on Sunday to reduce the gap to second-placed Olympique de Marseille to eight points.

Five days after losing 2-1 at Borussia Dortmund in a UEFA Champions League last 16 first leg fixture, PSG did little to reassure their fans.

The players had “Stay Strong China’’ written on their shirts to show their support for the victims of the coronavirus that has killed more than 2,000 people in China.

In a tough first half, Silva limped off the pitch in the 16th minute with a muscle problem and was replaced by Idrissa Gueye.

Hwang headed home from Nicolas de Preville’s corner as the PSG defence were caught off guard in the 18th minute.

The hosts’ all-time best scorer Cavani drew them level with a header from Angel Di Maria’s cross seven minutes later.

They increased the pressure and Cavani hit the woodwork before Mbappe forced Benoit Costil to make a superb save at the half hour.

Marquinhos deflected Di Maria’s free kick with his shoulder to put the home side ahead three minutes into added time in the first half.

Pablo equalised one minute later in farcical fashion, after second-choice Sergio Rico’s clearance from Marco Verratti’s backpass bounced on to Pablo’s knee and into the goal.

PSG, however, accelerated after the break and Marquinhos put the French champions ahead after 63 minutes, poking home the ball after Costil had parried a Cavani header into his path.

Six minutes later, Mbappe doubled the advantage from close range after being set up by Cavani.

PSG were kept on their toes until the final whistle as Pardo found the top corner with a superb strike seven minutes from time.

Ligue 1: Mbappe makes decisive return for winning PSG

Paris, Sept. 29, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) Kylian Mbappe’s return boosted Paris St-Germain (PSG) on Saturday as the France striker set up Neymar for a soft goal in a 1-0 victory at Girondins de Bordeaux in Ligue 1.

Mbappe, back as a substitute after a lengthy injury, burst down the right flank in the 70th minute.

Neymar then just had to tap in as PSG reclaimed the league lead with 18 points from eight games.

They lead Nantes, who snatched a 1-0 win at Olympique Lyonnais, by two points.

PSG travel to Galatasaray in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday, without the suspended Neymar, who has scored his team’s last three goals in Ligue 1. (Reuters/NAN)

Cavani injured as PSG beat Bordeaux in Ligue 1

Paris, Feb. 9, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) Paris St Germain (PSG) got back to winning ways in the French Ligue 1 on Saturday with a 1-0 defeat of Girondins de Bordeaux.

However, the French champions lost striker Edinson Cavani through injury ahead of their UEFA Champions League trip to Manchester United.

Cavani scored with a 42nd minute penalty kick before holding his thigh and leaving the pitch.

This has come three days before PSG take on Manchester United in their UEFA Champions League last 16 first leg tie.

PSG coach Thomas Tuchel is already without Brazil striker Neymar, who was ruled out of the whole tie with a foot injury.

The result puts leaders PSG on 59 points from 22 games, 13 ahead of second-placed Lille, who have played one more game.

There was some good news for PSG as midfielder Marco Verratti returned to the line-up after recovering from an ankle injury.

Verratti played almost an hour before being substituted by Leandro Paredes.

The Italian is now expected to start on Tuesday against a resurgent Manchester United side who claimed their 10th win in 11 games under caretaker coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The English side beat Fulham 3-0 on Saturday in the English Premier League (EPL).

PSG, who suffered their first league defeat this season against Olympique Lyonnais last weekend, were in control against mid-table Bordeaux.

Cavani broke the deadlock with a penalty kick for his 17th goal in 16 league games this season after Thomas Meunier had been fouled in the area.

Meunier was later replaced following a head clash with a Bordeaux player.

A couple of minutes later Cavani limped off the pitch clutching his thigh, prompting Tuchel to substitute him with Kylian Mbappe.

The French international had been expected to be rested ahead of Tuesday’s clash.

He is now likely to start as a lone striker at Old Trafford, supported by Julian Draxler and Angel Di Maria.

The second half was relatively poor, with PSG players, wearing shirts with their names written in Mandarin to mark the Chinese New Year, taking no risks.

The Bordeaux side were also lacking in creativity.

The visitors’ only clear chance after the break came in the 61st minute when Gianluigi Buffon pulled off a superb save to tip away Francois Kamano’s 25-metre strike.

Ligue 1: Kalu sees red as Marseille beat Bordeaux in empty Stade Velodrome

Marseille (France), Feb. 5, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) Olypique de Marseille boosted their hopes of qualifying for European football by beating Girondins Bordeaux 1-0 at home in an empty stadium in Ligue 1 on Tuesday.

The Ligue 1 side however benefitted from Samuel Kalu being sent off midway through the first half.

Teenage defender Boubacar Kamara scored shortly before halftime, nudging the ball in from close range for his first Ligue 1 goal.

It was shortly after Bordeaux  winger Kalu had been dismissed for a two-footed lunge on Lucas Ocampos.

The game was played in near silence as Marseille have been ordered to play all games at their Stade de Velodrome behind closed doors until further notice.

The decision serves as a punishment for fans throwing firecrackers on to the pitch in a 2-1 home defeat by Lille last month.

Mario Balotelli was forced to watch from an empty stand as he was ineligible from playing in the rescheduled game.

The original tie was due to take place in December when Balotelli was still a Nice player, but was called off for security reasons due to a demonstration by ‘Yellow Vest’ protesters.

Marseille’s Morgan Sanson nearly doubled their lead right before the interval when he struck a post while Bordeaux substitute Francois Kamano hit the crossbar in the second half.

Winger Bouna Sarr looked to have made sure of victory for the home side when he netted in stoppage time but the goal was ruled out for offside after a lengthy video assistant referee (VAR) review.

But the fulltime whistle soon followed, confirming a result which rarely looked in doubt and took Marseille up to seventh in the standings on 34 points, leaving Bordeaux in 12th. (Reuters/NAN)
