Injury forces Neymar off as Brazil draw 1-1 with Nigeria in friendly

Singapore, Oct. 13, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) Paris St-Germain (PSG) forward Neymar went off injured after 12 minutes as Brazil forced a 1-1 draw with Nigeria in a friendly in Singapore on Sunday.

The 27-year-old Neymar, making his 101st appearance for the national team, touched the back of his left thigh as he left the pitch and was replaced by Philippe Coutinho.

He can now be a doubt for his French side’s UEFA Champions League game against Club Bruges on Oct. 22.

There was however no immediate word on his condition, even though there were plenty of words to describe the game thereafter as the draw extended Brazil’s winless run to four games.

The Super Eagles took the lead after 35 minutes when Joe Aribo found space in a packed penalty box to rifle in a low shot past Manchester City’s Ederson.

It was the second goal in two international appearances for the Glasgow Rangers player.

Brazil equalised three minutes into the second half when Casemiro fired home from close range, after he was quickest to react when a Marquinhos header came back off the woodwork.

Real Madrid’s Casemiro later smacked a header off the bar and Coutinho should have scored a cut back with five minutes remaining but the score remained at 1-1.

In spite of having 70 per cent possession, Brazil were however unable to find a winner to remain winless in this international break after drawing 1-1 with Senegal on Thursday.

Since lifting the Copa America in July, Brazil have also drawn with Colombia and Senegal and lost to Peru.

Hosts Brazil beat Peru 3-1 to win Copa America

Rio de Janeiro, July 7, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) Brazil’s Gabriel Jesus made one goal, scored another and was sent off in the second half as they beat Peru 3-1 on Sunday to win the Copa America.

Brazil won the trophy for the ninth time in a pulsating contest at the Maracana stadium.

The hosts took the lead against the run of play after 15 minutes.

Gabriel Jesus bamboozled two defenders on the right flank and crossed for the unmarked Everton to fire home from close range.

Peru equalised a minute before halftime when Paolo Guerrero scored from the penalty spot after Thiago Silva was adjudged to have handled the ball.

Jesus however restored their lead just moments later to put the home side 2-1 up at the break.

Peru pushed for a second goal, particularly after Jesus was sent off for a second yellow card in the 70th minute.

But it was Brazil who sealed the win in the final minute when substitute Richarlison converted a penalty kick.

It was Brazil’s first major title since they won the Copa America in 2007 and the first for coach Tite, who took charge three years ago.(Reuters/NAN)

Brazil held to 1-1 by Switzerland in Group E opener

Rostov-On-Don (Russia), June 17, 2018 (Reuters/NAN) A second half header from Steven Zuber cancelled out a sensational early goal from Philippe Coutinho as Switzerland and Brazil drew 1-1 in a tight Group E World Cup opener on Sunday.

With 20 minutes gone, Coutinho gathered a 25-yard clearance from goal and curled a shot into the far corner off the post to give the five-time world champions the lead.

However, Switzerland, who had looked toothless throughout the first half, got back on level terms five minutes into the second half.

Zuber rose unmarked to head home a corner kick.

Coutinho had Brazil’s best chance after the break but shot wide.

The result means that Serbia lead Group E after beating Costa Rica 1-0 earlier in the day. (Reuters/NAN)

Brazil beat Germany 1-0 to restore some pride after 2014 fiasco

Berlin, March 27, 2018 (Reuters/NAN) Brazil edged past world champions Germany 1-0 in their international friendly on Tuesday to snap their opponents’ 22-match unbeaten run and exact some measure of revenge for their 2014 World Cup semi-final humiliation.

Gabriel Jesus headed in the winner in the 37th minute as Brazil, beaten just once under coach Tite and missing injured talisman Neymar.

Brazil’s victory over a second-string German team restored some pride after their 7-1 loss to the Europeans four years ago.

The Germans were hoping to match their record of 23 games without defeat but they lacked spark and precision, with several key players injured or rested, including Manuel Neuer, Mesut Ozil and Thomas Mueller.

Germany coach Joachim Loew made seven changes to the team that drew 1-1 against Spain on Friday as they prepare for a World Cup title defence in Russia in June.

“I expected Brazil would play with their best team and with their soul a bit injured they would be fully motivated,” Loew told reporters.

“It was not our day today. We made changes to the lineup and you could see it affected the team.

“We made some easy mistakes. There were some young players on the pitch and we were not really that fine-tuned as a team.

“But that is why you have such games, to try things out.”

In an evenly-balanced first half and with the “open wound” of their shock World Cup loss to Germany still painful according to Tite, the visitors were in no mood to take any early risks.

Disciplined and hard-working at the back, they kept German pressure under control.

Brazil grabbed an unexpected lead when keeper Kevin Trapp, replacing the rested Marc-Andre ter Stegen failed to hold on to Jesus’s point-blank header, with the ball slipping through after his reflex save.

“The team deserves a lot of credit,” said Brazil defender Thiago Silva. “I think we are on the right track, with humility, and discipline and we showed it today against this team.

“It makes us proud. We are delighted with the positive result against a great team.”

The Germans tried to get an equaliser before the break with Mario Gomez, vying for a spot in the World Cup squad, coming close twice.

But it was the Brazilians who were more aggressive in the second half, threatening through Paulinho and Philippe Coutinho.

Loew, who will announce his preliminary World Cup squad on May 15, brought on Sandro Wagner for Gomez to add pressure. However, Brazil kept their cool to earn a much-needed confidence boost.

The five-time world champions kick off their World Cup campaign against Switzerland on June 17 before facing Costa Rica and Serbia.
