Uche Nwosu lauds late Sen. Uwajumogu, advises politicians to shun do or die politics

Owerri , Feb. 21, 2020 (NAN) Chief of Staff to former Imo governor, Rochas Okorocha and 2019 governorship candidate of the Action Alliance (AA) in Imo,  Chief Uche Nwosu has advised politicians not to consider politics as a do or die affair.
Nwosu gave the advice while speaking with newsmen during the burial ceremony of late Imo North Senator,  Benjamin Uwajumogu at Ihitte-Uboma Local Government Area of Imo on Friday.
Nwosu who sympathised with the deceased’s family said the uncertainty of life was a major reason why politicians should approach politics with ease.
He added that losing an election either at the ballot or in court should be taken in good fate as according to him,  only one person could  occupy any particular elective position at the same time.
The former guber candidate described the late senator as a compassionate leader and urged politicians to imitate him.
 He however, advised politicians who still had pending election cases in court to create room for peace by accepting defeat in the spirit of sportsmanship.
 “Life is filled with so many uncertainties and we must not die for the sake of politics because it’s not a do or die affair.
  “Cultivating the spirit of sportsmanship will enable politicians who have reservations over past elections to sheathe their swords in the interest of peace,” he said.
News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the body of  Late Senator Benjamin Uwajumogu was laid to rest on Friday,  a ceremony which was well attended by Imo governor, Sen. Hope Uzodinma and a host of senators,  serving and former,  led by incumbent senate president, Sen. Ahmed Lawan. (NAN)

Esure Ijebu residents mourn as 86-year-old monarch is laid to rest

Ijebu-Ode (Ogun), Jan. 12, 2019 (NAN) Traditional rites have begun to commemorate the death of the Obelu of Esure, Oba Kamoru Sansi, who died on Wednesday in a road crash, while travelling to Ibadan.

The Ijebu Traditional Council under the authority of the Paramount Ruler of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Adetona, announced the commencement of the rites on Saturday.

The statement was signed by Otunba Jandu Etumora, Otunba Soga and Otunba Osifisan, the Baale Atoro, Ekeji and Eketa of Esure-Ijebu and made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday.

“We were implored to comply with the Obas-In-Council (OIC) resolution of March 1997 on the burial of Obas’ in Ijebuland.

“In a nutshell, the Obelu of Esure, Alaiyeluwa Oba Kamoru Sansi “ti waja” and was buried on Thursday, 10th of January 2019 at Esure.

“May the soul of our revered Kabiyesi Obelu, JANDU II Rest in Peace by the grace of our Creator, Olodumare, amen.

“No funeral is done for Obas. However a memorial will be done next year by His Grace,” the chiefs said.

NAN reports that the late monarch, Sansi was the father to renowned philanthropist and founder, Lifeforte International Schools, Mrs Sarah Olubi-Johnson.

In a tribute made available to NAN, erstwhile senator in Ogun-East and former Ogun Commissioner for Agriculture, Sen. Olugbenka Kaka extolled the late monarch for his virtues.

Kaka praised Oba Sansi for his simplicity, humility , contentment, philanthropy and social responsibility while on the throne.

He said that the late monarch made his marks on the sands of time adding that his memory would linger on from generations to generations.

“At 86, the exit of Kabiyesi, from mother earth, leaves a vacuum that will be extremely difficult to fill, if not impossible.

“The vacuum is not only created in Esure Ijebu, but Ijebuland as a whole, Ogun State, Nigeria and indeed the World, in general,” Kaka said.

Namibia’s president, Osinbajo, Gowon, Obasanjo  bid Adedeji farewell

Ijebu-Ode (Ogun),  July 6, 2018 (NAN) The President of Namibia, Mr Hage Geingob,  on Friday paid tributes to the late Prof. Adebayo Adedeji for his enduring sacrifice in the struggle for Africa’s emancipation.

He spoke at the funeral service in honour of the former United Nations  chief held at the Cathedral Church of Our Saviour in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun.

Geingob, alongside other dignitaries, praised Adedeji for the positive influence he had on the economic and social development of the African continent.

“Adedeji, my friend, was indeed a consummate Africanist and activist who fought for the liberation of Africa.

“It is sad that we are still facing some problems in Africa, despite the struggles of the past for a buoyant, self-sustaining continent.

“However, on the premise of the building blocks  people like Adedeji has laid, alongside present and past heroes, I am optimistic for the future.

“He has fought a good fight for Africa and I want to say his legacy will endure,” Geingob said.

Also speaking, Nigeria’s Vice-President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo,  said it was unusual for a person as Adedeji to be claimed by people from around the world had it not been  for his service.

Osinbajo praised the deceased for leaving his mark on humanity through an array of worthy legacies.

“There is no doubt that he applied himself diligently to his duty in a fair and godly manner.

“He always had a hand in what has made Africa what it is today, which is why everybody claims him.

“By what his life demonstrates, Adedeji would be remembered for the contributions and impact he made to the development of his nation and Africa.

“On behalf of Nigeria, we commiserate with the family and are proud of the endearing legacies he has left us,” Osinbajo said.

In their remarks, former Nigerian leaders, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo and Gen. Yakubu Gowon,  described Adedeji  as a selfless statesman who gave all to serve his country.

Brig. Gen. Suleiman Kazaure, the Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps, an institution Adedeji pioneered, said he would be remembered as an enduring catalyst for national unity.

In his sermon, Most Rev. Adebayo Akinde, former Archbishop, Ecclesiastical Province of Lagos Anglican Communion, also  paid tributes to Adedeji’s dedication to service.

“We are talking about a world class economist and  a renowned academic who was also a top flight diplomat.

“He had a burning passion to share knowledge and he did so at all times.

“It is an impossible task to enumerate the achievements of the times of the late Adedeji.

“He, however, can be epitomised for his dedicated service to his nation and humanity.

“He has left for us a legacy of service. We should let his life move us to be a positive influence to development,” Akinde said.

A pioneer Executive Director of the Addis Ababa-based United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), Adedeji died on April 25 at the age of  87.

He was the ECA director  between 1975  and 1991. (NAN)

Ilorin, June 3, 2018 (NAN) The remains of late pioneer Chairman of the independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC), Justice Mustapha Akanbi, has been buried in Ilorin.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Gov. Abdulfatah Ahmed of Kwara, former Ministers and top government functionaries and stakeholders in the judiciary were among dignitaries that attended the burial.
The deceased was buried at his Agba Dam GRA residence in Ilorin at about 3 p.m on Sunday.
The Chief Imam of Ilorin, Alhaji Mohammed Bashir, led the Jana’izah (funeral) prayer which lasted for less about 10 minutes.
In his brief sermon at the funeral rite, the chief Imam prayed Allah to grant Akanbi Aljanat Fiddaus (eternal rest).
Until his death, late Justice Akanbi was the first Wakili of Ilorin.
In 1992, the deceased was made President of the Court of Appeal, a position he held until retiring in 1999.
He was the founder of Mustapha Akanbi Foundation.
Akanbi was appointed ICPC Chairman by former president Olusegun Obasanjo in 2000 and served till 2005.
He was born on Sept. 11, 1932 in Accra, Ghana. (NAN)

Jalingo, Jan 6, 2018 (NAN) The Taraba Police Command has confirmed the burial of four persons on Saturday in Jalingo following a dawn attack by an armed militia on three Fulani communities in Lau Local Government Area of the state.

But a resident of one of the affected communities said 15 people were buried at Jalingo cemetery.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, ASP David Misal, said those that carried out the attacks were yet be identified, adding that no arrest has been made.

The spokesman called for calm and assured residents that security agencies were investigating the incident with a view to arresting and prosecuting the culprits.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) gathered that the attack was launched at about 6 a.m on Jan. 6.

The villages attacked by the suspected militia were Babagasa, Donadda and Katibu, which shared common boundary with Adamawa.

A resident of Katibu, Mallam Bello Isa, who narrowly escaped the attack, told NAN that many people in his village were killed and houses set ablaze.

Isa explained that so far bodies of 15 persons killed in the attacks were recovered and buried at about 10 a.m at the Jalingo Cemetery.

He said many people including women and children were still missing, adding that security agents are yet to be ddeployed to the area.

“The armed militia whom we identified as Bachama and Nyandang, came to our village at about 6 a.m today and said their cows were stolen, and before we could reply them, they started shooting and setting our houses ablaze.

“We are residents of the area and have no any misunderstanding with our neighbours who are Nyandang but we are Fulani by tribe but not herders, yet we came under attacks for no offence,” Isa said.

A resident of Donada village, Malam Kallamu Mohammed, who also escaped with gun shots, said they were surrounded by the militia whom they also suspected to be Bachama and Nyandang, early Saturday morning.

According to him, the militia who were well armed stormed the area on motor cycles and started shooting and setting their houses ablaze while others looted their properties. (NAN)

Katsina, Jan. 3, 2018 (NAN) The remains of the former governor of the defunct Kaduna State, Alhaji Lawal Kaita, has been buried in Katsina.
Kaita died on Tuesday in a hospital in Abuja after a protracted illness at the age 85.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the funeral prayer of the deceased was led by Imam Mustapha Liman at the palace of the Emir of Katsina at 2.30 p.m.
Prominent personalities that attended the rite included a Federal Government delegation comprising the Minister of Defence, Maj.-Gen. Mansur Dan-Ali (rtd); Minister of
State for Aviation, Alhaji Hadi Sirika, and Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media, Alhaji Garba Shehu.
Others were the deputy governor of Katsina State, Alhaji Mannir Yakubu; Emir of Daura, Alhaji Umar Farouq, and the Lamido of Adamawa, Alhaji Barkindo Aliyu Mustapha.
The Director-General SMEDAN, Dr Dikko Umar Radda, member House of Representatives representing Kankia/Kusada/Ingawa, Alhaji Ahmad Babba, traditional rulers and religious leaders from across the country also attended the burial.
Kaita was buried at the old Danmarna cemetery in Katsina metropolis.
He left behind a wife, children and grandchildren.
The deceased was the elected governor of old Kaduna State under the National Party of Nigeria (NPN) between October and December 1983. (NAN)
