NBA-SBL launches business law competency framework

Lagos, March 13, 2020 (NAN) The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Section on Business Law (SBL) on Friday in Lagos launched the “Business Competency Framework’’ to assist lawyers and law firms in their developmental management.
The 17-page booklet deals with the general and technical competencies of lawyers, particularly their behaviour, skills and knowledge required for lawyers to be successful in their areas of specialisation.
The Chairman of NBA-SBL, Mr Seni Adio (SAN), said the document was for young lawyers and law firms which aspire for success.
Adio said the competency framework which had been in the pipeline for some time, was for all law practitioners and law firms’ development.
He urged both sides to adopt it for their own purpose.
“It will be made available at no cost for all financial members of NBA-SBL,” the section chairman said.
The association’s Secretary, Dr. Adeoye Adefulu, said the idea behind the document was for law firms to know the best way to recruit, promote, evaluate and identify talents in the legal industry.
Adefulu added that with the document, lawyers could attain any position anywhere in the world if the contents were rigidly adhered to in their day-to-day schedule at work.
In his remarks, Mr Tosin Okojie, the launching’s keynote guest speaker, said competency of a workforce was a necessity in any organisation and also for the employees who desire success.
Okojie said the framework identified both general competencies, which applied to every lawyer in whatever area of practice they are in.
“The framework may be utilised by law firms to identify, train and reward their lawyers, and the lawyers can utilise it to identify where development is needed to achieve their ultimate career goals.’’
