‎Minna, ‎April 27, 2017 (NAN) The Police Clinic in Minna says it recorded 691 cases of malaria from January to date. ‎

Dr Ekaete Umoh, a medical officer in the clinic, made this known to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Minna on Thursday.‎

Umoh, however, said that most of the malaria cases were from children under the age of five.‎

“I can confirm to you that out of these 691 cases of malaria, 560 of the cases were children under the age of five.

“The mothers of the affected children come here to give us excuses of not using the treated mosquito nets because of the heat.

“I tell you, prevention is better than cure and all and sundry, high and low should key into the ‘Net therapy’.

“Net on the doors and windows are not enough to tackle mosquitoes, but treated mosquito nets should be used during sleep for the children and adults,” she said.

According to her, less spending is involved in the prevention of malaria than in its cure.

“Prevention is key. Everyone should take prevention seriously, because mosquito infects the Red Blood Cells and when they are destroyed, one gets pale.

“This in turn can result to anaemia and this can lead to heart failure,” she said.

Umoh expressed dismay that anti-malarial drugs are building resistance to some of the users as a result of drug abuse.

“Now what we are experiencing is that there is resistance of anti-malarial drugs, ‎because most people are abusing it,” she said.‎

According to the medical doctor, Artemisinin-based Combination Therapies (ACTs) for the treatment of malaria are the most abused.

“Malaria gets accustomed to patients who abuse malaria drugs and resists most times treatment seeking to cure the disease by the patients,” she said. (NAN) ‎

Abuja, April 13, 2017 (NAN) The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Primary Health Care Development Board on Thursday said it had recorded two fresh cases of Cerebro Spinal Meningitis (CSM) in Abuja.

The Executive Secretary of the board, Dr Rilwanu Mohammed, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja that the two confirmed cases were in Abuja Municipal and Abaji Area Councils.

Mohammed said that result from the laboratory test between Tuesday and Wednesday had shown that the two victims were infected with type C of CSM.

He explained that one of the victims in Nuku village of Abaji area council came from Sokoto State where it was allegedly that one person had died of meningitis.

He added that another six-year-old child in Garki Area 8, Abuja, was also confirmed at the Jabi Federal Medical Centre, Abuja.

According to him, these were the only confirmed cases FCT had recorded so far since the outbreak, adding that there are 10 suspected cases in the past where six persons died.

The scribe said that his agency had cordoned off the area where the two victims reside to immunise and sensitise residents against the disease.

Mohammed therefore advised FCT residents to desist from self-medication and report to hospital when they notice any sign of CSM, which include fever and stiff neck or neck pain.

He also enjoined residents to avoid crowded places especially this Easter season where people were travelling to villages for the celebration.

He added that people must ensure ventilation in their homes and cultivate the habit of hand washing as well as covering of mouth while coughing or sneezing to avoid the spread of the disease.

Mohammed said that immunisation against CSM would continue as soon as the agency receives additional vaccines from the Federal Government. (NAN) MS/HS/MST

Damaturu, March 30, 2017 (NAN) Suspected cases of Cebro Spinal Meningitis (CSM) have been reported in Fika and Nguru Local Government Areas of Yobe.

Dr Bello Kawuwa, the state Commissioner for Health, confirmed this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Damaturu on Thursday, saying that the cases are under investigation.

“We are still investigating the cases to determine whether they are CSM; the outcome of the investigation will provide us with the true position,” he said.

However, the commissioner did not give the number of cases recorded so far.

Kawuwa said medical teams have been deployed to the affected areas to access and control the situation.

“We are on top of the situation and we are doing everything possible to control the cases in the two local government areas,” he said.

NAN gathered that the World Health Organisation (WHO) has joined the state medical team to check the situation.

A WHO staff told NAN on condition of anonymity that “we (WHO) are supporting the state team to control the situation”.

Meanwhile, the state Ministry of Health has embarked on sensitisation campaign against communicable diseases, including CSM, as the hot season intensifies. (NAN)
