Corps members’ accident: Abia Speaker urges motorists to exercise caution

Umuahia, Nov. 15, 2018 (NAN) Mr Chikwendu Kalu, the Speaker, Abia House of Assembly, has called on motorists to exercise caution to prevent unpleasant circumstances, particularly as the Yuletide approaches.
Kalu said this on Thursday at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Umuahia, when he visited members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), who were involved in a road mishap.
The speaker advised road users to always ensure proper maintenance of their vehicles before putting them on the roads.
He attributed most accidents on the roads to reckless driving, adding that they can be avoided if caution is exercised.
Kalu said that the lives of Nigerians must be first line charge, even as he called on the Federal Government to expedite action on the Enugu-Port Harcourt Expressway.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that about 18 Corps members were involved in a motor accident on Nov. 12, along Isiala Ngwa junction, near Army Checkpoint, on the Enugu-Port Harcourt Expressway.
The victims, who were members of Batch C, Stream 1, 2018, deployed to Abia, were being conveyed in an 18-seater bus to their places of primary assignments in Aba and Osisioma, after their orientation course at Umuna, Bende Local Government Area.
According to eyewitnesses, who preferred anonymity, the bus had burst tyre and somersaulted twice, thereby leaving about nine of the corps members in critical conditions.
It however took the intervention of the speaker who was in a convoy along the scene to rescue the victims and rushed them to hospitals in Umuahia and Aba.
However, Kalu expressed satisfaction with the attention given to the NYSC members by authorities of FMC, and has undertaken to write off all their cost of treatment.
Dr Stanley Okerulu, who was attending to the victims, expressed satisfaction that they were responding to treatment.
He said that five of the victims had already been discharged, while the remaining four, including three females and a male, were being monitored.
Okerulu, who serves as an intermediary between the hospital and the NYSC, said that two of the patients had clavical fractures and were due for surgery.
He said all the acute challenges had been taken care of, assuring that “we are waiting for them to recover”. (NAN)

Abuja, Aug. 18, 2018 (NAN) The Buhari Media Organisation (BMO) has faulted the recent comments by Sokoto State Gov. Aminu Tambuwal against President Muhammadu Buhari, describing such as unfortunate, ill-conceived and a total assault on African cultural values.
The Chairman and the Secretary of the group, Messrs Niyi Akinsiju and Cassidy Madueke, respectively, said this in a statement in Abuja on Saturday.
The BMO said that Tambuwal had in recent time engaged in deliberate campaign of calumny against the President and warned that the governor was on a road to perdition just like Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State in 2015.
“This infamous style of politics belonged in the past and it is necessary to remind Tambuwal that it is not African tradition for young people to insult their elders and such negative attitude usually had its consequences.
“We also advise Governor Tambuwal to draw a lesson from what happened to Ayo Fayose in the last Ekiti governorship election, as he was roundly rejected by the electorate due to his non-performance and unguarded utterances.
“We also want to assure Tambuwal that his case will not be different from that of Ayo Fayose, as he will not only be rejected as the next governor of Sokoto state, but his presidential ambition will remain a pipe-dream.
“As he has not only denied his people development but has wasted the scarce resources he ordinarily should have used to render service to the good people of Sokoto state,” the statement read in part.
The group predicted that Tambuwal would definitely go into political oblivion in 2019 as he was already running against the tide.
The organisation also reminded Tambuwal that Buhari’s integrity and track record were clear for everyone to see, and this was the reason for their continued support for him and those he supported in elections.
According to the BMO, the support also manifested in the recent by-elections in Bauchi, Kogi and Katsina states where the All Progressives Congress (APC) trounced all their opponents including Tambuwal’s PDP.
The group expressed optimism that Buhari would win the next presidential election with a landslide. (NAN)

Sagamu (Ogun), Dec. 7, 2017 (NAN) Mr Clement Oladele, the Ogun Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), has advised motorists to exercise utmost caution when overtaking articulated vehicles to reduce road accidents, especially during the yuletide.

Oladele gave the advice at the launching of the 2017 FRSC Ember Months’ campaign on Thursday in Sagamu, Ogun.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the campaign has as its theme: “Right to Life on the Highway, Not Negotiable’’.

He stressed the need to enlighten road users on their safety during the period, which he described as the busiest during the year as more people traveled to observe the Christmas and New Year holidays.

“These vehicles are special vehicles. Sometimes we assume they can see us, but rather, most times, they don’t.

“If you drive 10 metres behind an articulated vehicle, I can bet you that the vehicle does not have you in its visual range with the way the mirrors are arranged.

“Even when driving ahead, you must give a distance of about six metres for the driver of the truck to properly see you.

“Caution must, therefore, be taken while overtaking such vehicles as you must ensure you have enough stretch for a successful manoeuvre, else the result is a crash.

“The closer to the head of the truck that you are, the lesser the chance you are seen by the driver.

“Common sense should prevail and motorists must take note of these blind spots so as not to be overrun by the truck,” he said.

The sector commander also implored truck drivers to always inspect their vehicles before embarking on any journey to avoid such vehicles breaking down and obstructing traffic.

The FRSC Sagamu Unit Commander, Mohammed Abdullahi, said the Corps would do all it could to ensure the safety of all during the period.

Abdullahi urged drivers to adhere to traffic regulations.

He said that broken down vehicles along the major corridors of the command would be promptly removed to prevent traffic gridlocks.

The unit commander said the Corps recorded 33 deaths in Sagamu axis alone, between January and November. (NAN)

Abuja, May 12, 2017 (NAN) Mr Timi Frank, a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has appealed to Gov. Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State to handle with care, allegations leveled against the Emir of Kano, Malam Muhammad Sanusi.

In a statement on Friday in Abuja, Frank also called on the State House of Assembly to scrutinise the allegations properly before taking any action.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that the Kano State House of Assembly announced that it had set up an eight-man committee to investigate the Emir.

The first class traditional ruler is being investigated on allegations bordering over alleged misconduct and misappropriation of funds belonging to the Kano Emirate Council.

Reacting to the development, Frank urged the governor to overlook some of the alleged excesses of Sanusi whom he described as “a new generation Emir’’.

He also appealed to the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, traditional leaders in the country, Northern Governors Forum and elders in the region to intervene and settle the matter amicably.

“I call on our traditional fathers to quickly intervene now before this controversy between the state government and the Kano Emirate degenerates.

“I appeal to our dear Gov. Ganduje and the state lawmakers not to exercise their full strength against the Malam Sanusi-led Emirate in Kano following perceived wrong doings.

“I believe, like other opinion leaders have said, there should be a way to amicably settle the differences,’’ Frank said.

He reminded the lawmakers and the governor not to forget how Sanusi spoke out the truth during the PDP-led administration which resulted to the enthronement of an APC-led government in the country.

The APC stalwart also called on the Federal Government not to keep mute on the matter, but to intervene to ensure peace and tranquility reign between the Kano State Government and the Emir.

He specifically begged the governor and other top state government functionaries not to promote moves that would lead to the dethronement of the Emir.

According to Frank, such action can become a bad precedence against traditional institutions in the state and the country at large. (NAN)

Minna, April 15, 2017( NAN) Dr. Salihu Mohammed, a medical practitioner with the General Hospital, Minna has cautioned rural dwellers against attributing the rampaging Cerebrospinal Meningitis (CSM) to witchcraft.

“The disease is a normal medical situation whose causes are well known. No 0ne should link it with any superstitious belief or witchcraft,” Mohammed told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), on Saturday in Minna.

He said that the disease could by checked by immunisation, and urged parents to allow their children to be immunised against the six killers diseases.

“`Parents must insist and ensure that all children are vaccinated against measles, whooping cough, yellow fever and diphtheria,” he said

The physician advised people to avoid overcrowded areas and ensure that their abodes were well ventilated.

He also advised people to promptly report suspected CSM cases to medical centres to as to save the victim and curb its spread. ( NAN)

Keffi (Nasarawa State), March 15, 2017 (NAN) The Modibbo Haruna Buhari Charity Organisation (BCO), an NGO, has cautioned religious leaders and traditional rulers in the country against negative comments on current economic policies.

Mr Suleiman Modibbo-Masaka, the Chairman, Board of Trustees (BOT) of the organisation, gave the advice on Wednesday while fielding questions from the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Keffi, Nasarawa State.

Modibbo-Masaka urged them to support and pray for the country’s economic recovery under President Muhammadu Buhari, who is working to improve the lives of Nigerians.

He enjoined religious leaders and traditional rulers to always preach peace and pray for improved economy rather than making negative comments that would create tension in the country.

According to him, adverse comments by some religious leaders and traditional rulers on the federal government economic policies are capable of fuelling more national crisis.

“Those traditional or religious leaders who form the habit of continuing attacking or condemning the federal government economic policies should desist in the interest of peace.;

“Because what they say some of their subjects and followers will agree with them, while others will disagree with them which may bring conflict in the society.

“Religious leaders and traditional rulers are the custodian of peace because it is their duty to continue to preach peace to their subjects and followers at all time in the interest of development.

“But in a situation whereby some religious and traditional rulers are seen making negative comments about the economy without weighing the implications of what they are saying is unacceptable and they need to change for the good of the nation.

“That is why, I am advising Nigerians, especially the religious leaders and traditional rulers in the name of God to stop making negative comments about the economy.

“They should always been seen advising the federal government on how to move the country’s economy forward considering the critical position they occupy in the society.

“We don’t want to mention the names of those religious leaders and traditional leaders here, but we are advising them to desist from coming out to condemn or attack the federal government economic policies.

“They should develop a channel on how to advise the federal government on ways forward if the need arises,’’ he said.

Modibbo-Masaka restated the commitment of the BCO to continue to educate and enlighten the people on the need to be their brothers’ keeper and be supportive to the government in order to enjoy more dividends of democracy.

He also appreciated Nigerians for their sustained prayers for the safe return of Buhari and urged them not to relent in their efforts towards praying for his good health to enable him deliver dividends of democracy to the citizens.

“I am calling on other Non-Governmental Organisations and Nigerians to collaborate with BCO in order to sensitise the people on the need to avoid inciting comments in the interest of peace and national development,” he said.

The chairman advised Nigerians, especially youths, to be law abiding, respect constituted authorities, shun negative behaviours, live in peace and tolerate one another irrespective of their ethnic, religious and political affiliations. (NAN)
