NSCDC commends Plateau residents for peaceful Eid-el-Kabir celebration

Jos, Aug. 14, 2019 (NAN) The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has commended Plateau residents for what it described as “a very peaceful Eid-el-Kabir celebration’’.
Mr Obasa Tanimu, the Public Relations Officer of Plateau command, made this known to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Jos.
According to him, the command recorded a crime free celebration within the metropolis and described it as one of the “most peaceful” events in the state.
Tanimu specifically commended the residents of Jos-Bukuru metropolis for their cooperation during the celebration.
He however urged them to sustain such cooperation and desist from indulging in nefarious activities that could jeopardise the peace in the state.
The spokesman also called on parents and guardians to caution their children and wards to desist from any act that could breach the peace in the state.
Besides, he advised the residents to go about their legitimate businesses and report any suspicious movement either by groups or individuals to NSCDC or other security agencies for prompt response. (NAN)

Abuja, Feb. 26, 2019 (NAN) Some stakeholders have called on political party leaders to caution their supporters against reckless celebration of election victory.
The stakeholders, who spoke to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Tuesday, also urged the party leaders to ensure modest celebration to avoid loss of lives after the final declaration of the winner of 2019 presidential election.
They recalled that several people lost their lives through reckless behaviour while celebrating election victory.
Mr Daniel Chukwu, said: “It is unfortunate to see young people engaging themselves in reckless driving or taking alcohol that could make them go out of their senses in the name of celebration.
“I think election victory should be celebrated in a matured manner in such a way that will not lead to loss of lives or injury.’’
On her part, Ms Hajara Salisu, expressed concerned on the inability of the party leaders to caution their supporters against unruly acts during victory celebration.
“My brother was a victim of this kind of celebration, may his soul rest in peace. There is a need for leaders to take serious action against this reckless behaviour during election victory celebration,’’ she said.
Salisu, however, called on security agencies to be on alert to ensure that Nigerians do not get injured or loss their lives as result of celebration of election victory.
NAN reports that the Chairman of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, on Feb. 24, declared open the National Collation Centre for the purpose of collating the presidential election results from the 36 states and FCT.
So far 18 states, including Abia, Anambra, Ekiti, Enugu, Ebonyi, Kogi, Kwara, Kaduna, Nasarawa, Ondo, Osun, Ogun, Yobe, Oyo, Kaduna and Adamawa as well as FCT, have presented their results. (NAN)

Abuja, April 6, 2017 (NAN) The Federal Government, in partnership with United Purpose, an NGO, will on Friday, celebrate the attainment of the first open defecation-free Local Government in Obanliku, Cross River.

The Obanliku Local Government was on 2016 declared open defecation-free after meeting all the requirements, as stipulated in the protocol for certification of open defecation-free communities.

Mr Nanpet Chuktu, RUSHPIN Programme Manager, in a statement on Thursday, said the activities would be followed by the Programme Coordinating Mechanism meeting to review proposals for action in other council areas.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that Obanliku Local Government is benefiting from the Rural Sanitation and Hygiene Promotion in Nigeria (RUSHPIN) programme, being sponsored by the Global Sanitation Fund.

Chuktu said within four years of programme implementation, 1,859 communities had been reached with hygiene messages.

According to him, no fewer than 600,000 people now live in open defecation-free communities in the six Local Government Areas.

He said that the agency used Community Led-Total Sanitation (CLTS) model to encourage the communities to build and use toilets while adopting behavioural change as a means of promoting hygienic habits.

The Minister of Water Resources, Mr Suleiman Adamu, representatives of Cross River Government and development partners, are expected to grace the occasion. (NAN)
