Abuja, Nov.23, 2022 (NAN) Mr Temitope Fashedemi, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Power, has called on civil servants to follow legitimate channels in projecting their demands and opinions to ensure favourable feedback.
Fashedemi made this call on Thursday in Abuja, at the Ministry of Powerâs Union Week Celebration, tagged `Conflict Management, Panacea for Good Harmonious Working Relationshipâ.
Fashedemi, represented by Mrs Victoria Adeosun, Director, Human Resources, called on the workers to always bring their demands forward through proper channels.
Fashedemi said that the management and government were always there to see to the welfare of the workers but appealed to the workers to utilise the appropriate channels to relate their demands to government.
Mr Daniel Inedidie, Chairman, Joint Negotiating Council, JCN, Nigeria Civil Service Union, while wishing the workers a happy celebration called on the management to step up efforts on ensuring the welfare of members of staff.
According to him, members of staff have so many needs that had not been met, yet they were usually punctual and steadfast in the discharge of their duties.
“It has been quite a journey up to this point, so many needs that had not been met.
“We still find ways to carry out our primary assignments as civil servants because of the attraction we have for the job.
“These needs like staff bus, working tools, computers, stationeries, office space/accommodation most of the time affect even the output of the officer carrying out his primary assignment.
“And increment of our welfare packages, we are using this opportunity to appeal to management to step up its efforts as regards the welfare of staff, ”he said.
On his part, Mr Adewunmi Tayo, Director, Finance and Accounts, speaking on the theme of the celebration said conflict could only be managed but could never be eliminated from any human relationship.
“What matters most is conflict and relationship management. What we are doing is how to reduce conflict to the barest minimum because it must always come.
“Environmental factors trigger a lot of conflicts, but we must have wisdom, be committed to our jobs, and have contentment to manage conflict.
“Many of us are very poor in time management. When you are given a job to do do it, measure your performance this will go a long way to reduce conflict,ââhe said.
Tayo called on workers to have an attitudinal change in carrying out duties, seeing themselves as government adding that once workers identify themselves as government they improve on their jobs.
The director urged,” workers should build their areas of strength in the work environment Let us see ourselves as one, reduce conflict by relating very well, let us be our brotherâs keeper.*
Also speaking, Mr Christopher Nnabia, Deputy Secretary-General, Nigeria Civil Service Union, said for any organisation to produce optimally, it must be devoid of conflicts.
Nnabia said to manage conflicts one must first identify the dissenting voices and recognise the parties.
He added that compromise was one of the methods of addressing conflicts by the dissenting parties shifting ground.(NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
