COVID-19: Gov. Wike commends Christians for complying with directives

Port Harcourt, March 29, 2020 (NAN) Christian Faithful across Rivers have been commended for complying with the directive of maintaining social distance during Church service to check the spread of Coronavirus.

Gov. Nyesom Wike of Rivers made the commendation on Sunday in Port Harcourt while addressing journalists after he led the Task Force on Enforcement of the Ban on Public and Religious Gatherings to monitor compliance.

Wike said that the churches ensured that each service had about 50 worshippers as agreed during the meeting at Government House, Port Harcourt.

The governor, accompanied by the Service Commanders, monitored compliance at the St. Thomas Anglican Church, Mile Two Diobu and St. John’s Anglican Church, Rumueme Deanery.

They also visited St. Peter’s Anglican Church, Rumuepirikom Deanery, Holy Trinity Anglican Church, Rumuapara District and Abundant Life Evangel Mission Cathedral.

The team also monitored compliance at the St. Andrews Anglican Church, Rumuobiokani, St. Michael’s Anglican Church, Rumuomasi Deanery, the Eternal Sacred Order of Cherubim and Seraphim and Mount of Grace, Elekahia.

They visited St. Barnabas Anglican Church, Elekahia Archdeaconry and Saint Paul’s Cathedral, Diobu, Corpus Christi, Living Faith Church,  Kaduna Street, D-Line and Churches on Aggrey Road.

All the churches visited had running water, soap and hand sanitisers to disinfect worshipers before and after service.

Wike said: “The compliance is very much appreciated, except for two churches that did not completely comply. Saint Thomas Anglican Church and Holy Trinity, Rumuapara.

“I have told the pastors that I don’t want to shut down the two churches. In all, we are satisfied with the total compliance.

“That shows that the people appreciate what we are talking about. For us, the safety of our people remains key. We are happy today.

“For the  two churches that failed to comply, we will review the situation and take action. As you can see, we went to different churches.’’ (NAN)

Abuja, Sept. 1, 2019 (NAN) A Catholic Priest, Rev. Fr. Charles Eneh, has admonished Christians to shun pride and imbibe the virtue of humility in their service to God and humanity.
Eneh made the call in his homily at St. Charles Lwanga Parish, Apo, Abuja on Sunday.
Eneh, a priest of Abuja Archdiocese, said it was easier to exhibit pride than to imbibe humility.
“Human beings are not inclined to be humble.
“It is a difficult virtue, it is a virtue for the strong; it is a quality people long out for you.
“Humility is the centre of all virtues and it is a virtue that will transport Christians to heaven,’’ he said.
According to him, everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.
Eneh gave an example of King Uzziah in the Bible from 2 Chronicles Chapter 26, who began proud because of he never lost any battle.
“As the power of Uzziah increased, he became so proud that he lost what he had gained. He defied the Lord by going into the house of God to burn incense on the altar.
“The priests resisted him but he did not listen to them. Immediately, he became a leper and was excluded from the temple; even in his death, he was not buried in the royal burial ground.
“That is how grievous pride can be in lives of Christians; so do every possible to imbibe the virtue of humility,’’ he charged.
The priest, however, urged Christians to emulate Moses, who was described as a very humane man, more humble than any man on the face of earth.
Quoting the Book of Numbers Chapter 12, Verses one to 10, he said Miriam and Aaron could not fight Moses because of his humility.
“In fact, God truck Miriam down with leprous because she was fighting with a humble person.
“Please, do not ever fight a humble person, if you do, you are fighting his God.
“You yourself should be humble, if you do, anyone who fights you will be fighting your God,’’ the priest said.

Yenagoa, Dec. 24, 2017 (NAN) Gov. Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa has urged Christians to use the Christmas celebration to intensify prayers for peace and security in Nigeria.
This is contained in a statement signed by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Mr Francis Agbo, in Yenagoa on Sunday.
It quoted Dickson saying prayer is necessary in the efforts to move the nation forward.
He urged Christians to live a Christ-like life, which he noted was a life of sacrifice, selfless service, love and forgiveness.
“The political leaders should also emulate Jesus Christ, who used his ministry for the good of all, by using their offices to advance the cause of the ordinary people.
“Service to man is service to God; he that serves man well, serves God well. Jesus Christ used his earthly ministry for the common good of humanity and above all, died for our sins.
“Our faith would have been in vain if Jesus had not sacrificed himself for us all.
“I therefore call on political actors and privileged Nigerians to always work for the good of the people and do things that would foster unity in the country,” the governor said.
Dickson further restated that 2018 was critical to finishing strong on the mandate of his administration.
“I advise the people in the state to as usual, support and collaborate with the government to keep delivering the dividends of democracy,” he said. (NAN)

Yola, Dec. 24, 2017 (NAN) The wife of the President, Mrs Aisha Buhari, has donated food items to Christians in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to celebrate Christmas.
The food items included bags of rice, cartons of macaroni and spaghetti, Indomie noodles, bags of Samolina and other assorted items.
This is contained in a statement made available to News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Jimeta-Yola, Adamawa, by her Director of Information, Mr Suleiman Haruna.
It said the wife of the president was represented by Mrs Gimbiya Dogara, wife of the Speaker, House of Representatives.
While presenting the items, the wife of the President urged Christian communities to continue praying for peace, unity and progress of Nigeria.
The statement indicated that the items were distributed at the ECWA Church in Garki, Abuja.
Receiving the items, the FCT Chairman, Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Rev. Samson Jonah, thanked Mrs Buhari for identifying with the Christian community at this festive period.
Jonah assured Mrs Buhari that the items would be distributed to all the Christian groups in the FCT.
“We want to assure you that by the grace of God, the distribution would go round all the Christian groups,” he said.
He also expressed the community’s continued support for Buhari’s administration in its bid to tackle corruption, insecurity and improve the economy.
Also speaking, the CAN Chairman, North Central, Rev. Isreal Akanji, said the kind gesture showed a sense of love and unity.
“I am really grateful, this is leadership; it is a sense of love and unity for the nation.
“Hajiya Aisha Buhari is a Muslim and she knows that this celebration is for Christians and yet she has decided to brighten the hearts of Christians,” Akanji said. (NAN)
