Adamawa community sacrifices Mosque for clinic

Mayo-Belwa (Adamawa),July 14, 2019 (NAN) Worried by lack of health facility, the Wuro Ahmadu community at Gongoshi Grazing Reserve in Mayo-Belwa Local Government Area of Adamawa has turned their only Mosque to clinic.

Wuro Ahmadu is a pastoral community with over 1,000 people and about 20,000 different livestock.

The Ward Head of the area, Alhaji Ardo Buba told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Wuro Ahmadu on Sunday that the decision of turning the mosque to clinic was to find means of providing primary healthcare services to the community.

“In Wuro Ahmadu village and its surroundings we have no fewer than 1,000 residents.

“Severally, if one is sick or a Woman is in labour we have to travel for over an hour before reaching a hospital.

“We are in this painful situation for decades and no body is willing to assist us. So we now decided to sacrifice our only Mosque to clinic,” Buba said.

He appealed to government to assist them with a health facility, drugs and personnel to manage the clinic and look after their people.

He said the village was also in need of a school for their children and standard health facility to reduce deaths and illnesses in the area.

On water provision, the ward head said PZ Cussons charity foundation recently sank two solar powered water boreholes and handed it over to the community.

Buba said the boreholes would serve the water needs of the community and their animals. (NAN)

Karu (Nasarawa), June 3, 2019 (NAN) The Nasarawa State Government has shut down Na-warke Clinic at Uke, Karu Local Government Area of the state, over illegal surgical operation and other sharp practices.
Dr Haruna Ekom, the state Director, Clinical Services in the Ministry of Health, led the team that closed down the clinic on Monday in Uke.
He said that the ministry has embarked on unscheduled inspection tour to curb the increasing rate of quackery in the health sector in the state.
The director regretted that quackery is affecting the health needs of many Nigerians and the socio-economic development of the country negatively.
“We have shut down many clinics over time due to illegal operation and we will continue to do that as part of measures to tackle quackery and to improve on the health status of the people of the state.
“We just shut down Na-Warke clinic because surgical operation is not expected to be handled at the facility.
“And because their activities had affected the health of many Nigerians negatively,” he said.
“We have decided to embark on this inspection tour among private health establishments in order to identify registered and unregistered as well as qualified clinics because of the activities of quacks in the health sector,’’ according to him.
Ekom however assured that government would deal decisively with erring health professionals who fall short of standards.
He called on health workers to adhere strictly to the ethics of their profession in order to save human lives.
“I am also advising health personnel to adhere strictly to medical laid down rules and standard in the interest of the health of the people and for the benefit of all,” he added.
The director also called on the general public to report any quack medical practitioner to the ministry for appropriate action. (NAN)

Abuja, May 23, 2019 (NAN) Marie Stopes Nigeria, family planning clinic providers of sexual and reproductive healthcare, says its clinic in Lagos is still open to the public.
Mr Effiom Effiom, the Country Director of the organisation, said this in a statement made available to newsmen on Thursday in Abuja.
He said that the clarification became necessary in response to social media claims that its clinic in Lagos had been shut.
“We are aware of rumours circulating on social media that our clinic in Lagos has been closed; we want to reassure our clients that there is zero truth to this.
“All of our clinics are open as normal and our teams are providing vital sexual and reproductive healthcare to women and families across the country,’’ according to him.
He said that the clinic was visited by members of the police investigating false claims on May 21 about “our work’’, made by an unknown group.
He stated that the police removed a small amount of equipment, including long-acting methods of contraception, and questioned some of our staff.
“We were cleared with the police that all of our services fully respect and comply with Nigerian laws and regulations, and we are now working closely with them to resolve any misunderstandings about our work,’’ Effiom said.
He said the clinic remained committed to serving the women, men and families across Nigeria who trusted its clinic and depended on its services.
According to him, Marie Stopes Nigeria was established in 2009 and now provides family planning and maternal care services in every state.
He said “each year, Marie Stopes Nigeria supports more than 2 million women with the services they need to protect their health, plan their families and to promote their wellbeing’’. (NAN)

Abeokuta, March 18, 2019 (NAN) The Ogun Government has inaugurated a National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) clinic to provide efficient and affordable healthcare delivery.
The state Commissioner for Health, Dr Babatunde Ipaye, inaugurated the facility on Friday at the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital Annex, Saje, Abeokuta.
He said that the clinic was built with the support of a Philanthropist, Chief Olatunde Abudu, in commemoration of his 90th birthday.
Ipaye said the project was part of government determination to meet the health needs of the people.
According to him, the clinic would provide services to those who have enrolled in the NHIS in the state.
The commissioner added that the State Health Insurance Scheme, recently signed into law, would soon start operations.
“Saje hospital, Abeokuta, is the outreach centre for Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital Sagamu. This is where our Post Graduate students do their family medicine and community health postings.
“This centre was donated by Pa Olatunde Abudu some 13 years ago and now on the celebration of his 90th birthday, we collaborated with his birthday planning committee to put up this purpose building clinic named, Olatunde Abudu Clinic,’’ ipaye said.
Chief Olatunde Abudu appreciated the state government for the good gesture, support and its commitment to the development of the health sector.
At the event, members of Saje Community were provided free medical treatment, including eye test, blood pressure, malaria, blood sugar and HIV/AIDS test, among others. (NAN)

18-year-old Briton donates clinic in Jema’a LGA

Kafanchan (Kaduna State), Jan. 13, 2018 (NAN) Mr Seth Thomas, an 18-year-old British philanthropist, has donated a clinic to Asso community in Gwong chiefdom of Jemaa Local Government Area of Kaduna State.

Thomas, at the commissioning ceremony on Sunday, said he was moved to raise funds for the clinic in view of the plight of people of the community who had no access to proper medical care when he paid an advocacy visit following attacks on the village in 2017 that claimed lives.

While expressing optimism that the facility would go a long way in meeting the health needs of the people, Thomas appreciated the community for naming the clinic after him.

Rep. Nicholas Garba (PDP Jema’a/Sanga) urged Government to properly assess the needs of communities that suffered such attacks with a view to addressing them.

Garba said government, beside deploying security to the area, has to do more to rehabilitate people whose houses were burnt and means of livelihood destroyed in the attacks.

The legislator appreciated the donor for the gesture and appealed to public spirited individuals to complement his effort in that direction.

The Chief Executive Officer, Christian Solidarity Worldwide, Nigeria, and General Secretary of Evangelical Churches Winning All, Rev. Yunusa Nmadu, said CSW partnered Thomas to actualise his dream of giving succour to the less privileged.

During the ceremony, the Kpop Gwong, Paul Zakka Wyoms, conferred a chieftaincy title, ‘Theh Gwong’, on the donor to reciprocate the gesture.(NAN)

‎Minna, ‎April 27, 2017 (NAN) The Police Clinic in Minna says it recorded 691 cases of malaria from January to date. ‎

Dr Ekaete Umoh, a medical officer in the clinic, made this known to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Minna on Thursday.‎

Umoh, however, said that most of the malaria cases were from children under the age of five.‎

“I can confirm to you that out of these 691 cases of malaria, 560 of the cases were children under the age of five.

“The mothers of the affected children come here to give us excuses of not using the treated mosquito nets because of the heat.

“I tell you, prevention is better than cure and all and sundry, high and low should key into the ‘Net therapy’.

“Net on the doors and windows are not enough to tackle mosquitoes, but treated mosquito nets should be used during sleep for the children and adults,” she said.

According to her, less spending is involved in the prevention of malaria than in its cure.

“Prevention is key. Everyone should take prevention seriously, because mosquito infects the Red Blood Cells and when they are destroyed, one gets pale.

“This in turn can result to anaemia and this can lead to heart failure,” she said.

Umoh expressed dismay that anti-malarial drugs are building resistance to some of the users as a result of drug abuse.

“Now what we are experiencing is that there is resistance of anti-malarial drugs, ‎because most people are abusing it,” she said.‎

According to the medical doctor, Artemisinin-based Combination Therapies (ACTs) for the treatment of malaria are the most abused.

“Malaria gets accustomed to patients who abuse malaria drugs and resists most times treatment seeking to cure the disease by the patients,” she said. (NAN) ‎
