150 young Nigerians to contest first ever Standing Competition in Lagos

Lagos, March 24, 2018 (NAN) No fewer than 150 young Nigerians are expected to contest in the first ever  standing competition billed  to take place in May in Lagos.

The competition tagged: “The Last Man Standing” is aimed at setting a world record of the longest time stood by any human being on earth.

Edmund Tawiyah, the National Coordinator, Last Man Standing Competition, Nigeria, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday in Lagos that 150 young Nigerians were expected to contest in the competition.

NAN reports that young Nigerians, males and females, from the ages of 18 to 45, who have good health status, can participate in the contest.

According to Tawiyah, the winner will receive a brand new SUV, as well as the first ever Medal of Resilience to be awarded by a top ranking officer in the Nigerian Army.

“This competition is expected to identify resilient young men and women.

“One hundred and fifty young Nigerians will stand literally in an open space all day, all night, come rain come shine, for a minimum of five days and maximum of seven days.

“This will be until the toughest and most resilient of them all emerges as the Last Man Standing 2018.

“During the competition, contestants can walk around within the arena, dance, have conversations with fellow contestants.

“But, there will be no sitting, no leaning, no squatting or pharmaceutical aid,” he said.

On the goals of the competition, Tawiyah told NAN: “We want to instill belief in the Nigerian youth toward facing their life goals through strength, character and resilience.

“We are also standing against hunger.” (NAN)

Plateau primary school pupil wins N12 Million scholarship

Jos, March 21, 2017(NAN) Master Godswill Okafor, a primary six pupil of the Plateau Private School, Jos has won a N12 million scholarship in a mathematics competition held in Abuja.

The scholarship covers his six-year secondary school education in any of the six Tulip Colleges in Nigeria.

Okafor came second in the northern region where he competed with 512 others.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the competition was organised by the Nigeria Tulip International College (NTIC), Abuja, in collaboration with the National Mathematical Centre, Abuja.

Mr Lucky Abdul-Hakeem, the Managing Director of NTIC, who briefed newsmen on the competition on Tuesday in Jos, said that the initiative was to encourage pupils to love mathematics and improve their performance in it.

“The scholarship covers tuition, feeding and accommodation of the pupil for the six-year study in the school,” he explained.

He said that the competition commenced in February and ended with the award ceremony, adding that N200,000 cash was also given to Okafor.

Abdula-Hakeem said that a desktop computer was given to Okafor’s school, while his mathematics teacher received N100,000 cash gift.

In her remarks, Mrs. Joy Okafor, the mother of the winner, commended the school for grooming her son to excel in the competition.

Okafor, a nurse, challenged parents to augment efforts of schools toward instilling excellence in children.

“We assist him in his homework; his father downloads mathematics questions from the internet and challenge him to answer them,” he said.

Godwin, who described his feat as “very encouraging”, advised his peers to love mathematics.

“The subject is simple; you only need to know the formula,” he said. (NAN)

Don calls for more inter-school competitions to boost education

Lagos, March 9, 2017 (NAN) Prof. Lateef Hussein, a former Vice Chancellor of the Lagos State University (LASU), has advised secondary schools in Lagos to introduce inter-school academic competitions to reverse the falling standard of education in the state.

Hussain gave the advice on Thursday at the grand finale of the 2017 Schools’ Debate organised by Yonuis Olatunji Basorun Education Foundation (YOBEF) in Lagos.

He said that students are becoming complacent in their studies due to dwindling inter-schools competition.

The former VC advised principals and school proprietors to organise regular competitions among students to improve the standard of education.

“Students will be more serious and challenged, when they see their peers from other schools that are better than they are.

“Awards of medals, trophies, prizes and scholarships should be given to encourage competitiveness.

“Quiz, debate and other educating competitions will go a long way in building children’s confidence through public speaking, groom them for social interaction and improve their speech skills,’’ Hussein said.

Earlier, Mr Ayobami Aiyepola, the Chairman, Board of Trustees of YOBEF, said the foundation was out to support the government effort of improving standard of education in the state.

He said that YOBEF had been running inter-school debate competitions for the past three years.

“There have been lots of improvement in students who participated in the previous competitions,’’ Aiyepola said.

NAN reports that 14 secondary schools participated in the competition.

Ansar-Ur-Deen Girls’ Senior High School, Itire emerged first position.

The Ansar-Ud-Deen Senior College, Isolo came second while Zumratul-Islamiyyah Senior High School, Yaba took the third position.

Participating students received awards of Trophy, Medals and some educational materials.

Mr Yakubu Basorun, the Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Ministry for Wealth Creation, charged the participating students to strive towards academic excellence at all times.

“YOBEF has more in stock for you next year. You should aspire to be one of the winners so that you can go home with some prizes,’’ Basorun said. (NAN)
