JNI, CAN call for prayers against coronavirus spread

Balanga (Gombe) April 2, 2020 (NAN) Jamatul Nasiril Islam (JNI) and the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) have jointly called for prayers against the further spread of coronavirus (COVID-19).

The two faith-based organisations have also advised Nigerians to compliance with government’s directives on what they should do to prevent the coronavirus from spreading further.

The groups made the call on Thursday during an awareness campaign visit to traditional rulers in Cham and Dadiya Chiefdoms in Balanga Local Government Area of the state the by the Task Force committee on the Coronavirus.

Alhaji Sale Danburam, Secretary JNI and member of the committee said that prayers and compliance with government directives would go a long way toward stopping the spread of the virus.

According to him, people need to understand that the virus is really spreading and killing people, hence the need for the public to pray for God to intervene.

“As Muslims whatever happens we submit it to Almighty God and we have our weapon which is prayers.

“We urge you to pray for us not to have the virus in the state and for those infected to recover.

“Government has done its own part and our own is to comply for all of us to succeed,” he said.

Danburam commended the state government for its commitment to the fight against the spread of the virus.

Mr Samuel Bulus, Vice Chairman of CAN and member of the committee also urged people to support government to save lives, ensure peace and development of the state.

Bulus said because of the virus, church services had been suspended except on Sunday on which day “worshipers must not be more than 50 persons at a time”.

He advised those with small Churches not to congregate more than 20 people and to provide water, soap, and sanitisers for good hygiene against the spread of the virus.

He emphasised the need to observe social distancing during funerals, marriages, and other gatherings that are necessary.

The Christian leader lauded the efforts of the state government in the fight against the spread of the virus.

On their part, the traditional rulers commended the state governor Inuwa Yahaya for the measures put in place by his administration to contain the spread of the virus.

They pledged to communicate to their subjects, government’s directives on what they should do to stop the spread of the virus. (NAN)

Port Harcourt, March 29, 2020 (NAN) Christian Faithful across Rivers have been commended for complying with the directive of maintaining social distance during Church service to check the spread of Coronavirus.

Gov. Nyesom Wike of Rivers made the commendation on Sunday in Port Harcourt while addressing journalists after he led the Task Force on Enforcement of the Ban on Public and Religious Gatherings to monitor compliance.

Wike said that the churches ensured that each service had about 50 worshippers as agreed during the meeting at Government House, Port Harcourt.

The governor, accompanied by the Service Commanders, monitored compliance at the St. Thomas Anglican Church, Mile Two Diobu and St. John’s Anglican Church, Rumueme Deanery.

They also visited St. Peter’s Anglican Church, Rumuepirikom Deanery, Holy Trinity Anglican Church, Rumuapara District and Abundant Life Evangel Mission Cathedral.

The team also monitored compliance at the St. Andrews Anglican Church, Rumuobiokani, St. Michael’s Anglican Church, Rumuomasi Deanery, the Eternal Sacred Order of Cherubim and Seraphim and Mount of Grace, Elekahia.

They visited St. Barnabas Anglican Church, Elekahia Archdeaconry and Saint Paul’s Cathedral, Diobu, Corpus Christi, Living Faith Church,  Kaduna Street, D-Line and Churches on Aggrey Road.

All the churches visited had running water, soap and hand sanitisers to disinfect worshipers before and after service.

Wike said: “The compliance is very much appreciated, except for two churches that did not completely comply. Saint Thomas Anglican Church and Holy Trinity, Rumuapara.

“I have told the pastors that I don’t want to shut down the two churches. In all, we are satisfied with the total compliance.

“That shows that the people appreciate what we are talking about. For us, the safety of our people remains key. We are happy today.

“For the  two churches that failed to comply, we will review the situation and take action. As you can see, we went to different churches.’’ (NAN)

Jos, March 28, 2020 (NAN) The Speaker, Plateau House of Assembly, Abok Ayuba, has decried the low level of compliance with the State Government’s directive to the people of the state to adhere to preventive measures against the Coronavirus pandemic.
Ayuba made this known in a statement by his Press Secretary, Mr Bulus Atang, obtained by News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday in Jos.
The speaker said that although the state government inaugurated some measures to prevent the deadly virus from spreading some people were reluctant to adhere to the directives.
He said that the measures, aimed at curtailing the spread of the pandemic, were in the best interest of the people.
Ayuba expressed sadness about doubtful disposition of some people who did not believe that the disease existed.
According to him, the doubts were posing serious challenge to government’s preventive measures to fight the disease in the state.
“Coronavirus is real. It is unfortunate that some people still do not believe it exists.
“I wish to advise citizens to obey the government directive to stay at home and practise  personal and environmental hygiene.
“I wish to call on the relevant agencies and all the stakeholders to create more awareness to educate people on the danger and consequences of doubting and disobeying government directives,” he said.
Ayuba commended Gov. Simon Lalong for  the proactive measures so far taken against the Coronavirus and for personally leading the supervising team. (NAN)

Zaria (Kaduna State), March 25, 2020 (NAN) Mr Umar Muri, Commissioner of Police, Kaduna State, has appealed to Zaria Emirate Council to comply with the state government directives towards curtailing the spread of Corona virus in the state

Muri made the appeal during the courtesy visit to Alhaji Shehu Idris, Emir of the Zazzau on Wednesday in Zaria.

The Commissioner of Police said he was in the emirate council for a familiarisation visit to the emir and also seek for the blessing of the royal father.

Earlier, Alhaji Bashir Aminu, Iyan Zazzau, a traditional title holder in the emirate, said the visit coincides with the meeting of the emirate on the state directives to ban religious congregations.

Aminu asked the commissioner for further directives and clarifications on the ban of Jumaat prayers coming up on Friday.

In his response the commissioner said the directives of the state government was very clear on the ban, he urged the council to comply with the directives.

He said police under his watch would work with fear of God, respect the rule of law in its engagements while protecting the life and properties of Kaduna State citizens.

He therefore appealed for strong collaboration and partnership with the traditional institution for information that would help the police to strengthen security situations in the state.

He said that their door was open for logical criticisms and corrections.

Earlier, Alhaji Shehu Idris, the Emir of Zazzau commended the police on their efforts to control and maintain law and order in the emirate.

The royal father maintained that the emirate will liaise and work closely with police towards maintaining peace, stability, law and order in the emirate.

The Emir said the state is now a model to many states in terms of the fight against insecurity in the region. (NAN)

ICRC seeks compliance of International Humanitarian Law

Abuja, Sept. 11, 2019 (NAN) Mr Peter Maurer, the President, International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), has called on States and non-State actors to comply fully with the rules of engagement of the International Humanitarian Law (IHL).
Maurer made the appeal while speaking on the 70th Anniversary of the Geneva Convention in Abuja.
He said 2019 marks the 70th anniversary of the Geneva Convention which was signed on Aug. 12, 1949, and was ratified by every state in the world.
He explained that the basic concept of the IHL was to protect people who are not or are no longer participating in hostilities.
“The Geneva Convention has rules of engagement with no distinction between the state and non-state actors.
“The convention speaks about parties in conflict and the purpose of engagement is in two folds; to negotiate the humanitarian space in areas where state actors are in control of territories and to ensure compliance with the rules of IHL.
“We engage by training, criticising and reviewing military operations. ICRC will always engage with those actors who are ready to engage with us, which puts a limit to our ability of engagement,’’ he said.
Maurer stressed that non-state actors have obligations in the conduct of hostilities in which they operate, which are the humane treatment of detainees and non-attack of civilians, among others.
He added that the non-state actors have same obligations and cannot excuse themselves from such obligations, adding that it is compulsory for them to adopt the IHL in their operations.
He explained that as the guardian of IHL, the ICRC’s mission was to raise awareness and ensure respect for the rule of IHL by all parties of armed conflict, adding that if respected, the rules protect everyone.
“Despite this, civilians often endure terrible suffering in armed conflicts and in some cases are directly targeted.
“They may be the victims of massacre, deportation, hostage-taking, sexual violence, harassment or they may be deliberately prevented from obtaining water, food and medical care.
“That is why ICRC maintains a presence in areas where civilians are most at risk,’’ he added.
Mr Akpan Anani, the President, Nigeria Red Cross Society (NRCS), said IHL aims at minimising the impact of armed conflict on people with obligations which seeks to avoid families being torn apart.
He said 70 years ago the community of states came together to commit themselves when they adopted the Geneva Convention by laying down a framework for protection and assistance to the most vulnerable in times of war.
Anani said the Geneva Convention had continued to provide a yardstick of humanity and a beacon of hope.
“We see the pain of the wounded, the despair of the displaced, the hunger of those who have lost everything and the grief of those bereaved.
“We hear the voices of these people who simply expect that they be spared from the hostilities, and they are right to expect this,’’ he said.
Anani added that the implementation of the Geneva Convention was not an easy task, thus there is need for determination, patience and unwavering trust that IHL was possible and can make a difference. (NAN)

Ilorin, Sept. 27, 2018 (NAN) The Kwara chapter of the Trade Union Congress (TUC) on Thursday expressed satisfaction with the level of compliance to the industrial action embarked upon by the national body of the union.

Mr Nasir Olumoh, the state TUC Chairman, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ilorin that there would be more compliance in subsequent days.

The union leader urged workers in the state to stay at home to avoid embarrassment from the officials of the union.

“I said earlier that we have instructed all workers to stay at home.

“There is no need coming to work and wasting their little hard earned money.

“We have members and executives who are very supportive. We have mobilised them to move round and ensure that all offices are under locked and key,” he said.

On the refusal of bank workers to join the strike, Olumoh promised to ensure that the staff observed the industrial action in the days to come.

According to him, the union has sent a message to the national secretariat of the body controlling the affairs of bank workers.

He also hailed the workers of the telecommunications operators and Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) for complying with the directive of the NLC and TUC.

NAN reports that the officials of the two unions went round to enforce compliance with the nationwide industrial action in Ilorin.

A NAN correspondent monitoring the strike reports that some workers particularly civil servants resumed for work but were later chased out of their offices by the union officials.

The unions later put the state secretariat and the governor’s office under lock and key. (NAN)
