UTI causes life-threatening complications, doctors warn

Abuja, Sept. 13, 2018 (NAN) Some medical practitioners have warned that Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs) could lead to potentially life-threatening complications, if left untreated.

The experts made this known in an interview the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Abuja.

UTI is an infection in any part of human urinary tract system, including the kidney, ureters, bladder and urethra.

Dr Egbete Chimaobi, the Managing Director, Ternopil State Medical University, Ukraine, said: “When UTIs are left untreated, it can lead to Sepsis and Abscess, which is an extensive and more serious form of any infection, especially in women.

“UTIs can lead to major infertility as women who are pregnant would experience premature labour and miscarriages.

“UTIs could also lead to kidney failure and cancer of the bladder,” he said.

The medical practitioner said women were likely to develop a UTI than men.

“Women are most likely to have UTIs because they have wider openings. And women have shorter urethra which means the bacteria have a shorter distance to travel.

“These bacteria reach the bladder and causes problems.

“Another reason is the use of diaphragms as birth control methods which increases the risk of UTIs,” Chimaobi said.

Dr Olorunsogo Ayodeji, General Hospital Keffi, Nasarawa state, however said “there are preventive measures to curb UTIs’’.

Ayodeji told NAN that: “UTIs don’t always cause sign and symptoms, but when they do, it may include strong,
persistent urge to urinate, a burning sensation when urinating, strong -smelling urine.

“Others are passing small amount of urine, urine that appears cloudy, urine that appears red, cola colored blood in the urine and pelvic pain, and in women centre of pelvis and around the pubic bone area.”

Another medical practitioner, Dr Iorwuese Charles, Police Hospital, Ado, Ekiti State, told NAN that rain could be a contributor to UTIs.

“Rains and humidity make for a perfect breeding ground for bacterial growth, leading to infection.

“Rains and humidity encourages the growth of micro organisms. Also during the rainy season clothing are different.

“People tend to wear tight cloths which provide damp environments for micro organisms with increased risks, the moisture during this season encourages the proliferation of bacteria thereby contributing
to UTIs,” he said.

Charlse therefore advised people to practice good personal hygiene, wearing under wears made of breathable fabrics and hydrating adequately. (NAN)

Abuja, March 15, 2017 (NAN) Dr Offiong Etim, a medical practitioner in Asokoro  General Hospital Abuja has said that untreated haemophilia could lead to complications and joint damage.

Etim said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Abuja.

He described haemophilia as an abnormal bleeding disorder in which the blood does not clot normally or a deficiency in one of the clotting process.

Etim also explained that haemophilia was inherited through a mutation in the X chromosomes which is common among men usually passed from father to son.

According to him, haemophilia is inherited, but most times patients with the disorder do not have family history of the disorder.

He added that the type of mutation determined whether the family member would experience mild, moderate or severe symptoms of the condition.

Etim noted that patients with the disorder would not have enough clothing factors in their blood which would cause them to bleed more if there was a cut in the ankle and legs, among others.

The medical doctor said that there were three types of haemophilia which were the A, B and C type, respectively.

He said that the ”A’’ means that there is not enough clotting factor VIII (8) in the blood while the B has to do with not having enough clotting factor (9) in the blood and C is caused by insufficient clotting factor.

However, Etim said that treatment of the condition would start with replacement therapy which started by infusing the clotting factor concentrates into a vein.

He suggested administration of some drugs could stimulate release of more clotting factor into the body especially in patients with mild cases of haemophilia in order to treat the condition.

Etim enjoined patients with the condition to adopt the culture of timely and adequate treatment in order to reduce the risk of life threatening bleeding as well as joint damage. (NAN)
