Lagos, March 26, 2020 (NAN) The Iyaloja General of Nigeria, Mrs Folashade Tinubu-Ojo, on Thursday visited some markets in Lagos State to ensure that traders comply with the state government’s directive on closure of some markets in the state.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, had directed that all open markets and stores should be closed, except for those selling food items, medicines, medical equipment and other essential life-saving products.

This was part of the preventive measures put in place by the Lagos State Government to contain the spread of Coronavirus disease in the state.

There was high level of compliance by traders in some of the markets visited by the Correspondent of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Lagos.

NAN reports that all shops were closed, except those exempted by the state government, especially those selling essential items such as foodstuffs and meats.

At Ikotun Market in Alimosho area of Lagos, Tinubu-Ojo sensitised the traders on proper hygiene methods and other laid down preventive measures to ensure that their goods do not get infected.

She also admonished them on the need to co-operate with the state government to contain the spread of the Coronavirus currently ravaging the whole world.

Tinubu, also cautioned the butchers and vegetable sellers, not to allow buyers to touch their goods without putting on hand gloves.

She also urged the traders to always use face masks and gloves to protect themselves and others from being infected by the Coronavirus.

The Iyaloja General said: “It is compulsory for you to always use face masks and hand gloves.

“You must not allow buyers to touch your goods without using gloves or you can give them nylon as alternative.” (NAN)

Gombe, March 23, 2020 (NAN) The Gombe State Government has ordered the closure of all schools to prevent the spread of Coronavirus in the state.

Gov. Inuwa Yahaya said this while speaking during a radio and television broadcast on COVID-19 in Gombe on Monday.

He said the closure will take immediate effect from Tuesday March 24.

“In accordance with the directive by the Presidential Task Force on COVID 19, all schools in the state are hereby directed to close effective from tomorrow Tuesday  March 24, 2020 until further notice.

“Furthermore, congregations for ceremonies, religious and other social activities are advised to limit numbers so as to not exceed the 50-person maximum as advised by the committee,” he said.

Yahaya said that the epidemic was a reality, and assured of government’s commitment towards fighting the disease.

“I must appeal to the general public to complement government’s effort in the fight against the dreaded disease irrespective of different shades of opinions or positions.

“Experience has shown that Coronavirus is no respecter of colour, creed, religion, size or level of development of any nation,” he said.

The governor also appealed to traditional and religious leaders to sensitise their followers on the dangers of the virus and the need to adhere strictly to medical advice.

Yahaya expressed government’s readiness for the fight virus in the state, adding that government had already released funds for sensitisation campaign and procurement of some equipment. (NAN)

Coronavirus: Federal lawmaker counsels constituents

Akure, March 22, 2020 (NAN) A member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Tajudeen Adefisoye, has advised his constituents not to dismiss the dangers posed by the suspected presence of the deadly oronavirus in the state.

Adefisoye, representing Idanre/Ifedore Federal Constituency of Ondo State, gave the advice on Sunday in Akure in a statement made available to newsmen by his media aide, Oluyemi Fasipe.

He encouraged his constituents and the people of Ondo state at large to heed the expert advice of regular washing of hands with soap, social distancing and the use of hand sanitisers.

Adefisoye also urged his constituents to avoid gatherings that were more than 20, pending when a vaccine would be developed for the coronavirus which had assumed pandemic status across the world.

The lawmaker also counselled his constituents to avoid travels that were not compulsory, particularly inter-state journeys in order to avoid having body contacts with carriers of the deadly disease.

Adefisoye further appealed to parents in Idanre/Ifedore Federal Constituency to ensure that their children and wards whose schools had been shut down on the instruction of the Ondo State Government were kept indoors.

He added that school children could become vulnerable to the dreaded coronavirus while roaming the streets where or where there was large gathering of people

The lawmaker advised that in the unlikely scenario of the virus infecting anyone in the town, such person should visit the nearest hospital for proper medical attention.

Adefisoye, who is the Deputy Chairman of the House Committee on Army, also advised anyone in the constituency that might have recently returned from any of the high risk countries to observe two weeks self isolation.

He added self isolation had become necessary so as to prevent the outbreak of the pandemic in Ondo State.(NAN)

Medical expert urges employers to provide working environment to curb Coronavirus, lassa fever spread

Port Harcourt, March 12, 2020 (NAN) Dr Lilian Uzomba, a medical expert on Thursday urged employers of labour to ensure a working environment that would prevent the spread of coronavirus in Nigeria.

Uzomba, Consultant Private Physician and employee of the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH), made this known in Port Harcourt at a sensitisation organised by the Association of Heads of Federal Government Establishments.

She recalled that Nigeria recorded first case of coronavirus on Feb. 27 while the second case was also announced on March 9.

“We are aware of the trending virus in the country, the Coronavirus and Lassa fever.

“This meeting is a sensitisation workshop to educate civil servants who will in turn go out to educate their families and other people around them on what to do to prevent the spread of the virus.

“There should be sufficient water for hand wash, hand sanitiser for employees to prevent the spread of the virus,’’ she said.

Uzomba urged employees not to panic to avoid stigmatisation or spreading rumours about the disease but should rather ensure their personal hygiene to avoid its spread.

She stated that Federal and state governments had put in place measures to curb the spread at the Nigeria Seaports, land, airports and borders.

Mr Henry Owonaro, Chairman, Asssociation of Heads of Federal Government Establishment, Rivers Chapter, said the aim of the workshop was to educate civil servants and members of the public on the viruses.

Owonaro, who is the Director, Federal Character Commission in Rivers, said that the enlightenment was basically to advise people on what to do to prevent the spread of corona virus in the state.

He said the workshop on current Health issues in Nigeria was organised in collaboration with UPTH and Port Health Services

Mrs Agnes Abah, a staff of Nigerian Maritime Administrative and Safety Agency (NIMASA), who participated in the workshop, commended the organisers of the programme for the enlightenment programme.

Abah said that she would take the message to other staff in her office as well as members of her family and neighbours on what to do to avoid the pandemic. (NAN)

Water Resources Minister calls for strict adherence to handwashing culture

Abuja, March 5, 2020 (NAN) The Minister of Water Resources, Mr Suleiman Adamu, on Thursday called for strict adherence to regular washing of hands with soap and water for protection against dangerous diseases, including infectious Coronavirus.

Adamu told the News Agency of Nigeria, (NAN) in Abuja that maintaining simple hygiene practices could protect people from contracting dangerous diseases.

He said that the ministry was poised to advocate for hygiene promotion at all times.

“The simple act of washing hands with soap and water regularly, especially at critical times before and after defaecation, urination, after changing baby’s diapers, before feeding a child, eating and before and after preparing food and after handling raw or live animals can help prevent the deadly disease and virus.

“The ministry under my watch has been striving very hard and working toward touching the lives and wellbeing of good people of Nigeria in many positive ways, particularly in Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Sector in consonance with the parlance that “Water is Life’.”

NAN recalls that Coronavirus was first discovered in the Industrial City of Wuhan in China toward the end of 2019.

According to World Health Organisation (WHO), signs of infection include cough, fever, breathing difficulties and shortness of breath.

In severe cases, Coronavirus can lead to pneumonia, organ failure and death, while some other infected patients may be asymptomatic, not displaying symptoms in spite of having the virus.

The virus is now a global problem, affecting most countries in the world and about 94, 250 cases as at March 4, 2020.

It was first confirmed in Nigeria on Feb. 28, when an Italian contractor working in Nigeria flew in from Milan, Italy, for a brief business visit.

The Minister of Health, Dr Osagie Ehanire, said he had been quarantined and now responding to treatment. (NAN)
