Votes counting commences in Niger

Minna, Feb. 23, 2019 (NAN) Counting of votes cast for the Presidential and National Assembly elections in Niger State has commenced, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.
Prof. Samuel Egwu, the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in the state, told NAN in Minna that the count followed the conclusion of accreditation and voting in some polling units.
“Already I saw polling units counting after their votes in a peaceful atmosphere in Chanchaga Local Government Area,’’ he said.
Egwu commended residents for demonstrating political maturity that led to the peaceful conduct of the exercise in the state.
“There was no any case of political violence and thuggery in all the places I visited,’’ the REC said.
Mr Lukman Abubakar, a resident of Sauka Huta, told NAN that the exercise was conducted peacefully without threat to lives and property.
Abubakar expressed satisfaction with the conduct of the elections and commended security personnel for their display of professionalism.
Some voters also commended INEC for delivering on their promises in terms of logistics and other processes.
Hajiya Rabi Isa, a voter, said that the election was peaceful, free and fair and devoid of any rancour.
“Our people have been able to exercise their civic responsibility peacefully, no problem of any kind, we thank God for providing peaceful political atmosphere,’’ Isa said. (NAN)
