Abuja, March 12, 2019 (NAN) Mrs Abike Dabiri-Erewa, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Foreign Affairs and Diaspora, has described the death of three Nigerians in the Diaspora in the Ethiopian Airline crash on Sunday as sad, shocking and devastating.
Dabiri-Erewa in a statement by her media aide, Mr Abdur-Rahman Balogun, said the death of the Nigerians was very painful at this crucial time of Diaspora development in Africa.
The affected Nigerians in the ill- fated airline were Prof. Pius Adesanmi of Carleton University, Canada; Amb. Abiodun Bashua, and Mr Karim Safi, one of the most active Diaspora youths in Europe.
“They all died in the active service of helping and contributing to the growth of Diaspora not only in Nigeria but in Africa as a whole.
“The sudden loss of our distinguished Diasporans in the Ethiopian airline is shocking, sad and devastating,” she said.
She said the distinguished Nigerians had contributed immensely to the development of Diaspora affairs in Nigeria and will be greatly missed.
Dabiri-Erewa offered her condolences to their immediate family members, the Diaspora community and Nigerians in general.
She prayed God to bless the soul of the deceased and condoled the families of all who lost their lives in the crash, for their gentle souls to rest in perfect peace.
She said that the deceased Nigerians were part of the delegates that were supposed to attend the Citizens and Diaspora Directorate/Economic, Social and Cultural Council meeting in Nairobi, Kenya.
“Adesanmi was one of the few professors who taught about the AU and Agenda 2063; while Safi, one of the founders of African Diaspora Youth in Europe (ADYFE), and Amb. Bashua, a retired senior Nigerian diplomat with many years with the UN.
“The trio were among the 149 passengers and eight crew members from 35 countries aboard the Ethiopian Airline from Addis Abba, Ethiopia, that crashed on Sunday on its way to Nairobi, Kenya,” she noted. (NAN

Abuja, March 10, 2019 (NAN) The Group Chief Executive Officer of Ethiopian Airlines, Mr Tewalde GabreMariam, has provided more details on its plane that crashed on Sunday morning shortly after takeoff enroute Nairobi from Addis Ababa.
A statement by the airline said its management led by GabreMariam had travelled to the scene of the crash.
He disclosed that 149 passengers and eight crew members were on board the flight, adding that the victims are of 35 nationalities.
According to the manifest released, there were 32 Kenyans, 18 Canadians, nine Ethiopians, eight Chinese, eight Italians and eight Americans as well as seven victims each from France and the UK.
Others are six Egyptians, five Germans, four each from India and Slovakia while Australia, Russia and Sweden has three nationals each and two each from Spain, Israel, Morocco and Poland.
Other countries, including Nigeria, have one victim each as well as one United Nations (UN) passport.
According to the airline, it is too early to speculate the cause of the accident and further investigation will be carried out to find out the cause of the crash in collaboration with all stakeholders including the aircraft manufacturer Boeing, Ethiopian Civil Aviation Authority and other international entities to maintain the international standard.
“’Information will be provided once the cause is identified.
“Ethiopian Airlines will provide all the necessary support to the families of the victims.
“A senior captain named Yared Getachew with a cumulative flight hour of more than 8,000 and with a commendable performance was commanding the flight along with first officer Ahmed Nur Mohammod Nur who had a flight hour of 200.
“149 passengers and 8 crew members were on board the flight. The victims were of 35 nationalities.
“The crashed B-737-800MAX airplane flew back to Addis from Johannesburg this morning to its yet another flight bound to Nairobi underwent a rigorous first check maintenance in February 04, 2019.
“Ethiopian Airlines Group expresses its profound sorrow and deepest condolences to the families of the victims and their loved ones on the tragic plane accident,” he said. (NAN)

Ijebu-Ode (Ogun), June 27, 2018 (NAN) A road accident on the Sagamu-Benin Expressway in Ogun on Wednesday, involving two trucks has left one person dead and two others critically injured.

Mr Babatunde Akinbiyi, the Public Relations Officer of the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE), confirmed the incident in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ijebu-Ode.

Akinbiyi, who said the accident happened at about 6:30 a.m. at Atoyo axis on the expressway, disclosed that one of the trucks with registration number; Lagos XR 359 LSD was involved in a headlong collision with an IVECO truck.

The IVECO truck was marked Lagos FST 805 XL.

“According to eye-witness accounts, the driver of the IVECO truck, left his own side of the road and faced incoming traffic, which led to the collision with the other truck coming from the East.

“Two males were injured, including the driver of the IVECO truck. Unfortunately, the driver of the DAF truck died on the spot.

“Officials of TRACE and the Federal Road Safety Corps were on ground to control traffic,” Akinbiyi said.

The spokesman said that the dead driver and those injured were taken to the Ogun State General Hospital in Ijebu-Ode while the two vehicles were towed to Ogbere Police Station.

Auto crash claims 7 lives on Sagamu-Benin expressway

Ijebu-Ode (Ogun), Dec. 9, 2017 (NAN)An auto crash on the Sagamu-Benin expressway on Saturday claimed the lives of seven people.

According to witnesses, the accident, which occurred around 5.30 a.m. on Saturday involved a blue Ford bus with registration number Imo ETU 409 XA; a red DAF model truck registered Lagos KRD 908 XN and an unregistered truck.

The vehicles collided at Olorunpodo J3 area in Ijebu-Ode on the Sagamu-Benin expressway.

Witnesses said eight passengers were also injured in the crash and have been taken to the Hope Hospital in J4 area in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun.

Confirming the incident, Mr Clement Oladele, the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) Sector-Commander in Ogun blamed the crash on excessive speed and route violation.

“The fatal crash, was caused by route violation which we all refer to as one way driving.

“We have always warned drivers to desists from this reckless act which ultimately results in killing of innocent lives.

“The FRSC would sanction heavily any driver caught driving against traffic and we are calling on passengers to also complain against such drivers breaking this violation.

“They can report such incidents at the nearest FRSC Command or call FRSC toll free number 122,” Oladele said.

The FRSC boss further revealed that coordinated efforts were ongoing by the officers of the FRSC and other traffic and rescue agencies to clear the debris from the crash.

Ijebu-Ode (Ogun), July 31, 2017 (NAN) The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Ogun said two persons died while four were injured in an accident on the Sagamu-Benin expressway on Monday.

The Ijebu-Ode Unit Commander of the FRSC, Mr Richard Adetoro, speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) blamed the crash on impatience on the side of the driver.

Adetoro said that a Toyota Hiace bus registered as ENU 727 XN coming from Lagos and heading to the East rammed into a moving Mercedes Benz 114 truck, registered; Lagos MUS 727 XN.

The crash, which he said was due to over speeding, resulted into the death of the two persons while four sustained injuries.

‘‘For reasons best known to the commercial bus driver, he violated road traffic regulations by leaving his side of the road to face incoming traffic.

‘‘He was speeding and crashed headlong with the truck around the J3 area leaving two dead and four injured.

‘‘Of the 15 passengers, only three were lucky to escape unhurt. The remains of the dead have been deposited at the Ijebu-Ode General Hospital.

‘‘The injured passengers have been taken to a private hospital for treatment and the wreckages of the crash have been towed to the Ogbere Police Station to free vehicular movement,” Adetoro said.

The FRSC Assistant Corps Commander advised motorists to always maintain discipline on the road irrespective of circumstances. (NAN)

FRSC records noticeable decrease in crashes on Lagos-Ibadan expressway

Sagamu (Ogun), Feb. 21, 2017 (NAN) Barley three weeks into the enforcement of the speed limit device, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) says it  has recorded a noticeable  decrease in crash rates on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway.

The FRSC Sagamu Unit Commander, Malam  Mohammed Abdullahi,  made the disclosure in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Sagamu, Ogun, on Tuesday.

The FRSC gave motorists, especially commercial vehicles and fleet operators, up to Feb. 1 to comply with the directive.

Abdullahi told NAN that since the enforcement began, the expressway ‘notorious’ for its high traffic volume and fatalities had recorded a significant reduction in crashes.

He noted that majority of the crashes hitherto recorded, especially on the completed and smooth portions of the road were speed-related.

The Assistant Corps Commandant attributed the sharp decline in crash rates to the compliance of commercial vehicles to the installation of the “speed limit” devices.

Abdullahi said that if maintained, then the FRSC would be able to attain its 2017 “Corporate Strategic Goals” of reducing traffic crashes and fatalities along the corridor by 15 per cent and 25 per cent, respectively.

“It is a well known fact that the human factor in relation to speeding, accounted for 50 per cent of road crashes in the country.

“Crashes involving commercial vehicles and trucks had always been prevalent but now we are seeing a decline as motorists begin to comply on the speed limiter policy.

“Since the enforcement began on our roads on Feb.1, we have seen enthusiasm on the side of the drivers to adjust accordingly with the speed limiter policy.

“I will like to commend Nigerians for their capacity to adhere to regulations when postulated.

“It’s a scheme that everyone should embrace because of the other benefits of having the speed limiter installed.

“It is one of the best decisions embarked upon by the FRSC to ensure safer roads in the nation by reducing crashes to the barest minimum,” he said.

Abdullahi said that efforts were on ground to expand the speed limiter policy to capture private vehicles in view of the advantages of the device.

He tasked private vehicle owners to be proactive and get the device installed for their own safety and for the benefit of their vehicles.

“It is advisable that everyone obtains the speed limit devices. It is just an attempt to take away the human control of speed and transfer to the machine.

“With the speed limiter, you will not be able to exceed the approved calibrated speed cap of a 100km/h, placing a stone on the pedal would make no difference.

“For now, the enforcement is only on the commercial vehicles and that’s simply because commercial vehicles have capacity to carry more passengers than the private ones,” Abdullahi said.

He further warned that any vehicle impounded for violating the speed limiter policy would pay a fine of N3,000 and such vehicles would only be released upon installation of the device.

While calling for collaboration from stakeholders for effective traffic management, the FRSC boss assured that the corps would continue to educate motorists on the benefit of safe driving for all road users.

“Speed thrills but also kills. A man who is doing 130km/h will not arrive much earlier than one who is doing 100km/h with a lower risk to crash ratio.

“For a motorist, the more speed you do, the longer is your braking distance and the shorter is your reaction time so why the speed in the first instance?

“Even at a speed of a 100km/h, a motorist is still doing a distance of about 28m/sec which is still a good distance in correlation to speed,” he said.

Abdullahi said the FRSC was determined in achieving drastic reduction in road crashes in the country to meet with the United Nations ‘Decade of Action’ for road safety running through 2011-2020. (NAN)
