deployed water guards to jetties to enforce the safety measures put in place by the government to curb spread of COVID-19.

The General Manager of LASWA, Mr Oluwadamilola Emmanuel, who disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), in Lagos, said that water guards had been stationed at the jetties to ensure that all precautionary measures and safety guidelines were strictly adhered to.

Emmanuel also said that LASWA had been educating and sensitising stakeholders in the sector.

According to him, any passenger who refuses to follow instructions will not be allowed to board, while operators who do not follow the laid down guidelines will be sanctioned.

“As a result of the COVID-19, it is of utmost importance that we put necessary measures in place to curb the spread of the virus.

“All waterways stakeholders, boat operators and users, are hereby implored to follow all the safety guidelines provided by the Lagos State Government to curtail the spread of this disease.

“Boat operators, terminal and jetty operators, should ensure they have hand sanitisers with at least 60 per cent alcohol base available on their boats.

“All passengers should wash their hands properly for 20 seconds as often as possible; and if you feel sick, please stay at home and call the helpline on 08000-CORONA,” Emmanuel said.

According to him, all stakeholders must work together to combat the pandemic.

Emmanuel told NAN that the authority had on Wednesday educated local boat operators on the use of hand sanitisers and personal hygiene as part of the precautionary measures put in place to to curb spread of the Corona virus.

He said that it had now become imperative for all boat operators to thoroughly sanitise their boats and all life jackets before embarking on each trip,  in addition to carrying hand sanitisers for passengers use before loading.

NAN reports that also in the guidelines issued by the authority, all boat captains and deckhands are expected to use hand gloves and face masks while embarking on a trip.

All ferry passengers are also advised to use face masks and possibly, hand gloves to avoid surface contact.

All terminal and jetty operators should  have temperature monitor to test each passenger before entering the terminal while hand sanitisers should be available for passengers’ use. (NAN)

Ogun: NYSC redeploys 289 corps members on marital, health grounds – Official

Sagamu (Ogun), Nov. 12, 2018 (NAN) The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has redeployed 289 corps members in Ogun to other states on marital and health grounds, after the completion of their orientation exercise.

Mrs Josephine Bakare, the NYSC State Coordinator, said this on Monday at the formal closing ceremony of the orientation programme which began on October 26 at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp, Sagamu.

Bakare said that the redeployed corps members were part of the 2,464 NYSC 2018 Batch “C’’ Stream I who had just completed their three-week orientation exercise.

She said that in Ogun, corps members had been deployed to teach in schools, work in state and local government establishments, while some had also been posted to some cottage and agricultural industries.

Bakare urged employers of corps members to give them welfare packages that would motivate them to be fully committed to their primary assignments.

“These patriotic Nigerians have been exposed to various physical and mental exercises to prepare them to be mentally alert and responsive wherever they are posted to serve.

“It is pertinent to add that during the period under review, the corps members have equally learnt to imbibe the core values of the scheme which include; integrity, commitment, patriotism, loyalty, dedication and team work.

“I also urge them to take their postings in good faith, and pledge the scheme’s unflinching support for their welfare.

“We shall continue to ensure that the abundant skilled manpower and God-given talents in these vibrant youths are rightly channeled for the benefit of the people of Ogun,’’ the state coordinator said.

She implored the corps members to give their best to support the government’s efforts in the areas of education, rural health, agriculture and infrastructure.

“Any act of indiscipline, absenteeism or truancy on your part will not be condoned,” Bakare warned.

In a similar vein, Gov. Ibikunle Amosun of Ogun has urged the corps members to begin to explore ways of contributing their quota to the socio-economic development of the nation.

The governor who was represented by the Commissioner for Youths and Sports, Mr Afolabi Afuape, tasked the corps employers to assign challenging duties to them to optimise their productivity.

“I urge employers of labour not to reject any corps member posted to them in line with our policy of optimal human resource utilisation.

“The employers should also provide enabling atmosphere for the corps members to fully express themselves in terms of service to their host communities.

“Integrate them into the mainstream of your workforce, and give them the same opportunities as your permanent staff.

“It is our belief in Ogun that the strength of our nation and the perpetuity of our national glory can only be made possible with our youths being involved in the nation-building process,” Amosun said.

He added that efforts would not be spared on the side of government to harness the corps members’ expertise and creative abilities towards making Ogun the envy of other states and the beacon of excellence.

The governor also urged the corps members to explore the opportunity of natural resources that abound in their area of postings in their self-development pursuit.

“These resources coupled with the enabling environment will allow you to have a peaceful and rewarding service year,” Amosun said. (NAN)

Potiskum (Yobe), July 26, 2018 (NAN) No fewer than 1,396 corps members under the 2018 Batch ‘B’ deployed to Yobe have taken oath of office to serve the state patriotically and diligently during their one-year compulsory service.
Mrs Grace Adzer, the State NYSC Coordinator, on Thursday tasked the corps members to take all aspects of the orientation course with seriousness as it would prepare them to be stable physically, mentally and emotionally.
“The course content of the programme is designed and streamlined to instil in you essential leadership qualities for future challenges,” she said.
Gov. Ibrahim Gaidam of Yobe, represented by Alhaji Muhammad Ngoma, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Youth, Sport and Social Development, urged the corps members to remain steadfast and serve the country with commitment.
“I urged you to be determined to not only emulate your predecessors in the scheme but to surpass their achievements in all areas of human endeavours.
“The aim of establishment of the scheme would be defeated if you do not integrate freely with the members of your host communities and actively participate in their development efforts,” the governor said.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that this is another batch of corps members accepting to serve in the insurgency ravaged state following the restoration of security.
Some corps members posted to the three most affected states of Borno, Yobe and Adamawa for the national service had declined to report for or participate in the exercise.
It would be recalled that the NYSC management had also suspended the deployment corps members to the state at the height of Boko Haram attacks until lately. (NAN)

Lokoja, Sept. 8, 2017 (NAN) The Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Lokoja, says it has deployed 73 consultants in the hospital to cushion of the effect of the strike by resident doctors on patients.

Dr Jones Taiwo, the Head of Clinical Services (HCS) of the centre, said on Friday in Lokoja that the services of the consultants were being complemented by 32 intern doctors and 33 NYSC doctors.

He told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that pharmacists, dentists, radiologists and other categories of health workers have also been fully mobilised to fill the gap created by the striking resident doctors.

“This has really helped us a lot in keeping the services going on smoothly with minimal strike effects.

“It is only the resident doctors that are on strike, others are working and we are attending to at least 85 per cent of patients that are trooping to the centre.

“There is a directive from the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria that one year of the interns should not be interrupted, and this has been strictly obeyed which has also helped us in effective service delivery,” he explained.

The official said that normal laboratory tests were conducted while doctors had been carrying out emergency and scheduled surgeries.

According to Taiwo, the Labour Ward that is always overwhelmed is being manned by consultants.

He said that the management of the hospital had no problem with the resident doctors in the hospital being on strike, saying that they are only complying with a directive from their national body.

The Chairman of the state chapter of NARD, Dr Shola Baoku, is said to be a member of the association’s negotiating team with the Federal Government over the strike.

NAN also reports that normal activities at the FMC are continuing as doctors are seen attending to patients on admission and those at the outpatient unit. (NAN)

Lafia, Aug. 30, 2017 (NAN) The Nigerian Peace Corps (NPC) has deployed its personnel to mosques, Eid prayer grounds and flash pints in Nasarawa State ahead of this year’s Eid-el-Kabir.
Mr Bala Joshua, Commandant of the corps in the state, said this on Wednesday in Lafia while addressing 90 field officers from the 13 local government areas of the state.
The personnel are undergoing a three-day routine training programme to prepare them for the task.
Joshua said the proactive strategy was to ensure a hitch-free Sallah celebration.
He said that the corps embarked on this in the interest of national security, stability, peace and development.
“As you are all aware that this training is a routine exercise of all the field officers from the 13 local government areas of the state so that they can impact the same knowledge to officers in their respective duty posts.
“We have decided to train you for effective service delivery so as to ensure peace by assisting other security agencies in combating crime in the state and the country at large,” he said.
Joshua enjoined the officers to use the knowledge gained to fight crime in their respective local government and development areas of the state.
“We are collaborating with other security agencies to sensitise the people on the need for them to behave well, shun crime and other negative tendencies in order to have a hitch-free Sallah celebration,’’ said the commandant.
He also tasked them to maintain standards and adhere strictly to their professional ethics before, during and after the festive period.
Joshua felicitated with the Muslim Ummah and wished them a peaceful and violent-free celebration.
“I want to call on the Muslim Ummah and Nigerians to see Sallah celebration as a way of transforming their faith with God and their brothers and to live according to the teaching of the Holy Qur’an which preaches peace, love and unity,” he said.
Besides, the commandant called on Nigerians, especially youths, to be law-abiding, respect constituted authorities and live in peace irrespective of their affiliation, adding that no meaningful development could be achieved in any society without peace.
Earlier, Mr Kakpo Ayen, Commander, Field Officers Training of the command, said that the officers had been trained in different areas especially drill parade and effective service delivery. (NAN)

Pankshin (Plateau) April 13, 2017 (NAN) The Pankshin Unit of the Fedeal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Plateau says it has deployed 70 officers and men to patrol flash points and strategic routes during the Easter period.

“The Easter season is a period for lots of festivities in the hinterland, so we expect heavy traffic because many people will be coming in from the towns.

“In the specific case of Pankshin, the Ngas people will hold their annual `Puus Dung Cultural Festival’ on Saturday, April 15.

“We have mapped out strategies for effective traffic management so as to minimise road accidents within the period,” the Unit Commander, Mr Nnamdi Ikeh-Akabogu, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Pankshin on Thursday.

The Unit Commander listed some flash points to include “snake bend’’ along Pankshin– Kanke road, the hilly Panyam-Chip road, as well as the usually dangerous Kuka corner, along Kanke–Langtang road.

He advised motorists to avoid speeding in view of the raining season, and called for patience and respect for traffic regulations.

The official said that he had briefed the personnel on what was expected of them, and stressed the need to protect Nigerians from becoming victims of other people’s carelessness.

The commander, however, said that the introduction of the speed limiting device had reduced the rate of accidents on the highways, especially in the rural areas.

He appealed to vehicle owners to install the speed limiting device so as to save lives. (NAN)

NASG redeploys staff of defunct newspaper to information ministry

Lafia, March 29, 2017 (NAN) Four years after it shut down the `Nigeria Newsday Newspapers’, the Nasarawa State Government announced on Wednesday that it had redeployed its staff to the ministry of information.

Abdulhamid Kwara, the Commissioner of Information, Culture and Tourism, who disclosed this to newsmen in Lafia, said that the step was to ensure that all the workers were accommodated and kept in service.

“The directive from the governor is that all the workers should be redeployed. He has said that no one should be disengaged,” Kwara said.

He said that the ministry had set up a committee which would assign responsibilities to the redeployed workers, based on their fields.

“Once the committee submit its reports, we will assign schedules of duties,” he said.

He said that officers, whose services were not needed in the information ministry, would be moved to the Office of the Head of the Civil Service, for redeployment to other ministries or agencies.

The commissioner identified those to stay in the ministry to include journalists, computer operators and technicians.

“Those in such categories will be useful because the ministry is planning to revamp the state printing press,” he said.

He hinted that staff of the accounts and administration departments, as well as drivers, would be sent to other offices because the ministry had enough hands in those areas.
