Kaduna, March 25, 2020 (NAN) Kaduna State Ministry for Environment and Natural Resources, said it has commenced desilting drainages to improve sanitation and public health.
The Director for Environment in the ministry, Muazu Yusuf, made this known on Wednesday in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Kaduna.
Yusuf said the evacuation of drainages would cover areas from the city center to other parts of the state covering 30km each in Kaduna, Kafanchan, and Zaria.
He said Cape Gate Investment Company Limited, the company responsible for refuse evacuation in the state would ensure the evacuation process as part of their contract agreement.
He said the company agreed to cover four main areas such as the evacuation of all wastes to the official dumpsites, street cleaning and sweeping to ensure all routes were clean, vegetation control and desilting of drains.
According to him, the coming of the COVID-19 and raining season has necessitated drainage desilting.
The director reiterated the state government’s commitment to protecting the environment through effective waste management.
He, therefore, called on the public to desist from indiscriminate dumping of refuse in waterways and ensure they always use designated collection centers to avoid the spread of diseases.
“If the drainages are blocked, there is definitely going to be risk of flood and that is what we are avoiding.
“So we call on the people to always come out en-mass to desilt their drainages and also clean their environment.” (NAN)
