Keffi (Nasarawa State), March 9, 2018 (NAN) Mr Sule Sadiq-Sami, the newly inaugurated Chairman, Governing Board, Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Keffi, Nasarawa State, has charged workers of the hospital to be redouble their dedication to duties for effective healthcare service delivery.
Sadiq-Sami gave the task on Friday during the board`s maiden visit/ interactive session with management and staff members of the centre in Keffi.
He promised to give priority to staff welfare to boost healthcare service delivery.
The board chairman said that given priority to workers welfare would not only improve on their productivity but would also improve the health status of the people of the state and Nigeria at large considering the importance of health to the development of the society.
“We are here to do our job without fear or favour and with the fear of God as well as to make you happy as long as you are making the patients happy especially in the area of improved welfare,” he said.
Sadiq-Sami advised the staff to be punctual, loving and friendly to patients, warning however that it would no longer going to be business as usual.
The chairman who tagged the board as a “Dream Team” also assured the management staff of the centre of the board`s willingness and commitment to harness available resources in the centre for infrastructural development.
“We will ensure enhanced staff welfare in cognizance with President Buhari`s change philosophy of zero tolerance for corruption,” he said.
The Medical Director of the centre, Dr Joshua Ndom-Giyan, congratulated the board members on their appointments and assured them of the management`s cooperation for effective service delivery.
Ndom-Giyan called on the staff members to support the board to enable them succeed.
The medical director informed the board members that he is committed in ensuring infrastructural development and enhanced staff welfare in the centre.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the meeting was attended by other management staff and labour leaders, including the Chairman of Senior Staff Association of the centre, Mr Isaac Achimugu.
NAN recalls that Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole, inaugurated the members of government boards of MDAs under the ministry on March 6. (NAN)

Nurses congress endorses boycott of shift duty over allowance

Jos, March 20, 2017 (NAN) Nurses in the Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH), have voted to continue their boycott of shift duty over the non-payment of their allowances for three months.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), reports that the nurses commenced the boycott on March 7, 2017 and had since then adjusted their working hours to the regular hours of 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The nurses have also resolved not to be at work at weekends.

Following pleas by the management of the hospital, the nurses held a congress on Monday, to review the situation and consider the appeals, but the workers objected to suggestions to end their action.

“The nurses voted to continue with the boycott until their demands are met,” Mr Mustapha Kabir, Chairman, Joint Health Sector Union (JOHESU), told NAN on Monday.

Kabir said that the nurses were yet to receive the N63 million released to JUTH management for the payment of the three months shift duty allowance owed them.

He alleged that management was handling the matter with “levity”, and accused it of failing to retrieve workers’ legitimate entitlements from the government treasury “in spite of our constant reminders”.

“Throughout 2016, we waited for the management to get back the money from the Federal Government coffers, but they failed, hence our resolve to stop further shift duties,” he said.

“No nurse runs afternoon or night shift; all nurses come to work in the morning and close at 3 p.m.,” he said.

He hinted that JOHESU would begin a protest on Friday, March 24, 2017, over various issues such as the non-implementation of the National Industrial Court order, directing JUTH to create a Department of Medical Laboratory Science Services.

“The court gave a 30-day ultimatum which has since elapsed. We want management to act.”

He listed other issues to include the non-release of 2016 promotion list.

Reacting, the Chief Medical Director of JUTH, Dr. Edmond Banwat, said that the management was working “very hard” to resolve the issues, and assured the workers that the funds for all payments would soon be made available.

Banwat, however, described the nurses’ “no-shift'' stance as ``alien and detrimental to healthcare delivery”.

“The hospital is not performing optimally due to the actions of some its workers; I have already appealed to them to resume normal duty,” he said.

He said that medical doctors had been mobilised to work longer hours so as to help the patients. (NAN)

Jos, March 13, 2017 (NAN) Nurses in the Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH), Plateau, have shunned shift duty following non-payment of their three months shift duty allowance, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.

The nurses have adjusted to working the regular hours of  7 a.m to 3 p.m daily, exclusive of weekends.

Mr Mustapha Kabir, the Chairman, Joint Health Sector Union (JOHESU), JUTH chapter, confirmed this development to NAN on Monday in Jos.

Kabir said that his members were yet to receive the N63 million released to the management of the tertiary health institution in December 2015 for the payment of the three months shift duty allowance.

However, he attributed the delay and non-payment of the arrears to payment migration to the IPPIS in 2015, when the Federal Government mopped up the fund by the end of 2015.

The chairman also blamed the management for treating the matter with levity and failure to retrieve the workers legitimate entitlements from the government treasury in spite of being reminded by the union throughout 2016.

“Throughout 2016, we waited for the management to get back the money from the Federal Government, but they failed in spite of our notice to them, hence our resolve to stop further shift duties,” he said.

Kabir said that the indefinite industrial action commenced on March 7, until their demand was met.

He further revealed that radiologists, medical lab scientists and pharmacists were also on strike in the institution.

“No nurse runs afternoon or night shift, as all the nurses come to work only in the morning to perform their duties and close at 4 p.m,” he said.

Reacting, the Chief Medical Director of JUTH, Dr Edmond Banwat, said that the management was working earnestly to resolve the issue.

Banwat assured that the funds would soon be made available for payment.

He, however, said that the non-shift embarked upon by the nurses was alien and detrimental to patients.

Banwat lamented that the hospital was not performing optimally due to the actions of some its workers and appealed to them to resume normal duty.

He said that medical doctors were however working round the clock to serve patients. (NAN)
