Sanusi, Emir of Kano seeks structured policy on ageing

Abuja, Nov. 7, 2018 (NAN) The Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi II, has called on the Federal Government and other stakeholders to produce a structured policy on ageing in order to address the problems of ageism.
Sanusi II made the appeal in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) at the sidelines of the first Africa Stakeholders Regional Conference on Ageing on Wednesday in Abuja.
Represented by Amb. Ahmed Umar, the first class traditional ruler said that having a structured policy in the system would be a plus in addressing challenges of ageing.
He underscored the need for a conscious effort to domesticate into the constitution, frameworks that would help older persons in Nigeria.
He also suggested that older persons should be innovative part of every national agenda, stressing that there is need for re-engagement of senior citizens into the system.
Sanusi II also recommended that traditional rulers should be engaged in order to educate people in the rural areas on the need for healthcare givers to be informed and educated on care of the elderly.
He noted that older persons were credible people that could be trained before and after retirement, especially public servants, on how to contribute to the society and that should be made a national policy.
He therefore advised the federal government and the National Assembly to adopt the outcome, recommendations from the Stakeholders Group Ageing conference into the constitution for the benefit of all.
The monarch said that retired older persons were still useful and had a lot to give back to the society, saying that to retire is not to be tired. (NAN)

Lafia, Nov. 4, 2108 (NAN) The Nasarawa State House of Assembly on Sunday described the death of the Emir of Awe, Alhaji Abubakar Umar, as a colossal loss to the people of the state.
The House also described Umar as a rare gem with an unparalleled accommodative posture.
This is contained in a statement issued by the Press Secretary to the Assembly Speaker, Alhaji Jibrin Gwamna, to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lafia.
The statement quoted the speaker, Alhaji Ibrahim Abdullahi, describing the first class traditional ruler as shocking and too sudden.
He said that the death of Umar has created a vacuum to the people of Awe and the state at large, adding that his demise is a great loss not only to the Awe traditional council but to the entire state.
Abdullahi said that Umar had worked tirelessly for the emancipation of the people of Awe and the state at large, adding that “his (Umar’s) demise would be felt by the people of the state’’.
“The Late Sarkin Awe is a peace maker, promoter and a bridge builder and he has also contributed a lot to the development of not only Awe but to the state at large.
“The news of the death of Alhaji Abubakar Umar was heartbreaking, painful but God gives life and takes at will.
“We the entire members of the House commiserate with the family and indeed the good people of Awe and the state at large over the death of our rare gem.
“We (legislators) urge the family and Awe traditional council not to be depressed but to be courageous and have faith in God as well as to see his death as an act of God,’’ the statement read in part.
He prayed God to grant the entire family and Awe traditional council the fortitude to bear the loss.
The speaker also called on the people of the state to live in peace and tolerate one another irrespective of their ethnic, religious and political affiliation.
NAN recalls that Umar died on Nov. 3 at the aged of 69 at a hospital in Abuja following a brief illness having spent 33 years on the throne.
The deceased had been buried in Awe according to Islamic rites. (NAN)

Keffi (Nasarawa State), June 16, 2018 (NAN) The Emir of Keffi in Nasarawa State, Dr Shehu Chindo-Yamusa III, has urged parents and guardians to monitor and prevent their children against the intake of hard drugs and engaging in social vices for the good of the society.
Chindo-Yamusa III, a first class traditional ruler, made the call in his Eid-el-Fitr message to his subjects in his palace in Keffi, Keffi Local Government Area of the state.
He noted that consumption of hard drugs by some youths had affected their lives and their education negatively, hence the need for parents to closely monitor their wards to curb the growing menace.
The monarch also appealed to Muslim faithful and other Nigerians to continue to pray for peace, unity and development of the country, adding that peace is the necessary requirement for the development of any society.
The emir maintained that sustained prayers by Nigerians would overcome devilish acts threatening the peaceful co-existence of the country.
Chindo-Yamusa III added that Eid-el-Fitr is not only for merry making, but a time to emulate what Prophet Muhammad (SAW) was sent by Almighty God to preach to humanity.
The traditional ruler said that Prophet Muhammad preaches peace, love and unity, while urging Muslims to emulate his good attributes in order to enjoy the blessings of Allah here and in the hereafter.
“We must maintain and use the good lessons of the Ramadan which includes brotherhood, bond of charity and love sharing, among others, in the interest of peace.
“Muslims worldwide should endeavour to continue to sustain their good acts and behaviour beyond the one-month period of the Ramadan fast, so that we would continue to get Allah’s blessings and favour,” he said.
He also called on Nigerians to be law abiding, respect constituted authorities and live in peace with one another irrespective of religious, political and ethnic differences.
Besides, Chindo-Yamusa III enjoined Nigerians to embrace good government policies and programmes in the interest of national development.
He further urged his subjects to continue to embrace agriculture considering its importance to national economic development.
Earlier, the Chief Imam of Keffi Central Mosque, Alhaji Muhammadu Auwal, charged Muslim faithful to adhere strictly to the teaching of the Holy Qur’an in the interest of peace and national development.
The cleric also called on Muslims to shun all negative acts capable of tarnishing their personal integrity, the image of the state and the country at large. (NAN)

Abuja, March 31, 2018 (NAN) Dr Idris Musa, the Emir of Jiwa, Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has called on Nigerians to love one another and co-exist peacefully in spite of their ethnic and religious differences.
Musa spoke with newsmen in his palace shortly after his chieftaincy investiture and turbaning ceremony held at Government Secondary School, Jiwa, on Saturday.
The event was also part of his 17th anniversary and 66th birthday celebrations.
“I am now 66 years and today is my 17th year on the throne; so I have every reason to thank God; it is worth celebrating.
“You can see the crowd; I thank everybody that honoured my invitation; may God reward them.
“My message to those honoured today is that we should be our brothers’ keepers.
“I am asking FCT indigenes and Nigerians to embrace one another; we should love one another and live in peace.
“We do not have any other country but Nigeria,’’ said the traditional ruler.
He said that a Lebanese was among those honoured because of his contributions to wealth creation and employment in the FCT.
Musa said the Lebanese had a factory at Idu industrial park which was within Jiwa emirate.
“When I visited his factory, I discovered he employed 500 Nigerians, both men and women.
“The chairs he manufactures are exported to African countries; so, if he can do something like that in my chiefdom; I need to appreciate it.
“If he can accommodate Nigerians of every nationality there, he needs to be encouraged,’’ he said.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the event attracted a mammoth crowd, while cultural troupes from different ethnic nationalities accompanied the honourees. (NAN)

Karshi (Nasarawa State), July 6, 2017 (NAN) Alhaji Sani Muhammadu Bako III, the Emir of Karshi in Nasarawa State, has mobilised community to rehabilitate three collapsed bridges along Karshi/Rafin Kwarra road.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that people from Karshi, Rafin Kwarra, Pyanko, Gidan Maigagah, Gidan Waziri, Orozu and Zukonu participated in the exercise.

The exercise included refilling of pot holes and the three collapsed bridges along Karshi/Rafin Kwarra and Pyanku road.

Bako III told NAN in Karshi on Thursday that the self-help project was aimed at boosting the socio-economic activities of his domain and complementing the rural development efforts of the state government.

“Gov. Tanko Al-Makura had done a lot of work and he is still doing a lot of work for the state.

“We thank him for the award of contract for the construction of Tudun Wada/Karshi road which will boost our economic activities.

“I have decided to mobilise my subjects to embark on the self-help project so as to connect different communities of this area with other communities which in turn will also boost agricultural production in this area.

“It will also boost the business activities of the people of this area there by fighting unemployment, poverty and boost the revenue base of the individual and the government at large,” he said.

The traditional ruler urged the residents to continue to support President Muhammadu Buhari and Al-Makura in all their endeavours.

He stressed the need for Nigerians to be law abiding, respect constituted authorities and to live in peace irrespective of their ethnic, religious and political differences.

The traditional ruler restated the commitment of his emirate council to positive policies and programmes of government that have direct bearing on the lives of the ordinary people.

Also speaking, community leaders, Musa Turaki and Yahaya Adamu, commended the emir’s initiative to embark on the self-help project and called for its sustenance.

They assured the emir of their unalloyed loyalty and continued support to the emirate council at all times. (NAN)

Keffi (Nasarawa State), June 25, 2017 (NAN) The Emir of Keffi in Nasarawa State, Dr Shehu Chindo-Yamusa III, has urged Nigerians to embrace agriculture in order to overcome recession.

Chindo-Yamusa III made the call on Sunday in his Eid-el-fitr message to Nigerians in Keffi.

The traditional ruler also said that going to farm would boost food production and socio-economic development of the country.

“God has endowed the country with abundant fertile land and agile human capital that is capable of mass producing the nation’s food requirement,’’ he said.
The first class traditional ruler said that Nigerians were capable of producing adequate farm produce for local consumption and export, if the entire nation’s potentials were fully harnessed.

On the celebration, Chindo-Yamusa III said: “Eid-el-fitr is not only for merry making, but a time to emulate what Prophet Muhammad (SWA) was sent by Almighty God to come and do.”

According to him, Muslims who are sincere in their faith are expected to adhere and practice the message of the Prophet.

He therefore enjoined Muslims to emulate the lessons of peace, love and unity preached by Prophet Muhammad to enjoy the blessings of God Almighty here and in the hereafter.

“We must maintain our God-fearing acts which we exhibited during the fasting period by sustaining the lessons and change of attitude learnt during the Ramadan fast.

“Such lessons include brotherhood, bond of charity and love sharing as well as abstaining from adultery, cheating, alcoholism and drug abuse, among others.

“Muslims worldwide should endeavour to continue to sustain their good acts and behaviour beyond the one-month period of the Ramadan fast so that we would continue to get Allah’s blessing,” he said.

The monarch also appealed to Muslims faithful and Nigerians to continue to pray for President Muhammad Buhari, and other elected and appointed political office holders to God to assist them pilot the affairs of the country in the right direction.

The emir added that sustained prayers would enable the nation overcome acts threatening peaceful coexistence in Nigeria.

Besides, Chindo-Yamusa III called on Nigerians to continue to be law abiding, respect constituted authorities, tolerate and live in peace with one another irrespective of religious, cultural and ethnic differences.

Earlier, the Chief Imam of Keffi Central Mosque, Alhaji Muhammadu Auwal, while presiding over the Eid-el-Fitr prayers admonished Muslims to adhere strictly to the teaching of the holy Qur’an and Prophet Muhammad for peace and national development.

The cleric also enjoined Muslims to show love and be just at all times for the progress of the country. (NAN)

Emir commends IGP’s commitment to crime fighting

Lafia, April 21, 2017 (NAN) Alhaji Isah Mustapha Agwai, the Emir of Lafia in Nasarawa State, has praised the Inspector-General of Police, Alhaji Ibrahim Idris, over tough measures adopted to tackle crime in the country.

“The emergence of Idris as IGP has brought renewed rigour to the fight against crime. Officers and men of the Nigeria Police Force are now more committed to ensuring a crime-free Nigeria,” Agwai said on Friday in Lafia.

The Emir spoke when Mr Shuaibu Lawal-Gambo, Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of Finance and Administration, paid him a visit as part of his sensitisation tour of the North-Central zone.

He said that the crime rate in his domain had gone down, and urged the police to sustain the efforts.

The monarch described Idris as “a dogged and patriotic fighter that has demonstrated a strong commitment to effective policing”, and advised Nigerians to support the Force with information to ease the war against crime.

He called for more efforts to check vices like electoral fraud, insurgency, kidnapping, terrorism, cattle rustling and rape.

Earlier, Lawal-Gambo had emphasised the role of traditional institutions in complementing the efforts of security operatives in crime control.

He said that the visit was to sensitise the people on the need for unity and peaceful coexistence, and also educate them on the importance of community policing.

The official attributed the modest achievements of the police in crime fighting to the support of traditional rulers, and called for more cooperation so as to record more successes. (NAN)

Lafia, April 21, 2017 (NAN) The Emir of Lafia, Nasarawa State, Alhaji Isah Mustapha-Agwai 1, has commended the Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Kpotun-Idris, for tackling crime and criminality in the country.

He said the appointment of Idris as IG-P has drastically reduced criminal activities in the country in recent times.

The emir, who is also the Chairman, state Council of Chiefs, said this when Shuaibu Lawal-Gambo, a DIG in charge of (Finance and Administration), paid him a visit as part of his sensitisation tour of North-Central.

The first class traditional ruler noted that there had been a great significant reduction of crimes across the nation, while appealing for its sustenance.

He said the enviable efforts of Kpotun-Idris as a dogged, pious, patriotic and committed crime buster, was being noticed.

“We commend his achievements in returning the country to its normalcy of a peaceful nation, through discipline and enforcement.

“I wish to commend the police under Idris-Kpotun’s watch for the dedication, commitment and complementary role to the presidency in the fight against electoral fraud, insurgency, kidnapping and terrorism,” he said.

He said the officers and men of the police should continue to remain resolute and firm in the discharge of their duties.

“I am aware that the maintenance of peace and orderliness is never an easy task in any society; it is my fervent prayers that Almighty Allah will give you the sound health, wisdom and knowledge for peace and crime free society,’’ the emir said.

Speaking earlier, the DIG underscored the role of traditional institutions in complementing the effort of security operatives in crime control.

He said the IG-P directed the DIG’s in the six geo-political zones to go and sensitise their people on the unity, harmonious and peaceful coexistence as well as educate the people on the importance of community policing.

He said the role of traditional institutions in sustaining peace and unity in the country would remain relevant in community policing.

According to him, traditional rulers in the country have in no small measure supported and cooperated with the police and other security agencies, which resulted in the high level success recorded in curbing criminal activities.

Lawal-Gambo however appealed to adherents of the two major religions in the country to assist security agents to overcome some security challenges bedeviling the nation. (NAN)

Katsina, Feb. 25, 2017 (NAN) The Katsina Emirate Council on Saturday announced the of death of Hajia Aminatu Mai Babban Daki, mother of the Emir of Katsina, Alhaji Abdulmumini Kabir Usman.

Alhaji Bello Mamman, Secretary, Katsina Emirate Council, who announced her demise, said that Aminatu died on Saturday in Katsina, after a protracted illness.

“She is survived by nine children, including the Emir, and will be buried on Sunday in Katsina,” he said. (NAN)
