Aubameyang goals give Arsenal 3-2 win over Everton

London, Feb. 23, 2020 (Reuters/NAN) Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored twice to earn Arsenal a 3-2 English Premier League (EPL) win over Everton on Sunday, extending the Gunners’ unbeaten start to 2020.

The victory moved them back into the battle for European places and also lifted Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal side up to ninth place in the league with 37 points.

Everton remain without a victory at the Gunners in 24 years and a point adrift in 11th.

As well as the goals of the prolific Aubameyang, who is now joint top scorer in the league on 17 with Jamie Vardy, Arsenal had goalkeeper Bernd Leno to thank.

Some of his late saves preserved the lead.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin put Carlo Ancelotti’s team ahead in the first minute with a superb acrobatic volley, after David Luiz had failed to deal with a Gylfi Sigurdsson free-kick.

Yet Arsenal reacted well, with young forward Eddie Nketiah, who started ahead of Alexandre Lacazette, levelling in the 27th minute.

It was his first goal at the Emirates, and it came from a fine cross from the left from substitute Bukayo Saka.

Six minutes later and Arsenal were ahead —- Luiz making amends for his earlier mistake with a lovely, defence-splitting pass to Aubameyang who calmly slotted past Jordan Pickford.

Brazilian Richarlison brought Everton back on level terms though just before the interval, poking home from close range.

Arsenal, however, struck straight after the break with Aubameyang heading in a Nicolas Pepe cross, 23 seconds after the restart.

Leno then produced a brilliant point-blank reflex save from Calvert-Lewin and did well to keep out a Richarlison effort as Everton pushed for an equaliser.

Arsenal went close to a fourth goal when Nketiah, who spent the first half of the season on loan at Championship (second-tier) Leeds United, struck the bar with a curling shot.

Everton almost grabbed a point at the end, but Calvert-Lewin’s header from a Bernard cross went just wide.

The victory completed an excellent week for Arteta’s side after their 4-0 Premier League win over Newcastle United and the 1-0 win at Olympiakos in the Europa League on Thursday.

“The best thing is the spirit we showed after coming back from Europe —- three games in seven days. And coming back after we went behind.

“The resilience they showed after they were absolutely shattered. Three wins in seven days, for sure it is my best week,” said the Spaniard.

Ancelotti said his striker Calvert-Lewin was continuing to progress but needed to work on his focus.

“He is doing well but (it is) not enough. If he wants to be a top striker, he has to work more hard, focus hard, work more. He is doing well but he has to have the game to be focused all the time,” he said.

“Defensively, we were terrible. We have to improve. There were three goals we could have avoided. It was too easy for Arsenal to score three goals.

“We had a lot of opportunities at the end of the game to equalise and we did not get it. We are working, and we believe in what we are doing.

“Today was a step down. We need to refocus. We need to re-balance,” said the Italian.(Reuters/NAN)

Richarlison sparks Everton win after Crystal Palace’s Benteke ends drought

Liverpool (UK), Feb. 8, 2020 (Reuters/NAN)  Everton scored twice in the second half thanks to a piece of brilliance from Richarlison and late opportunism from Dominic Calvert-Lewin to claim a 3-1 win over Crystal Palace at Goodison Park on Saturday.

The win moves the Blues up to seventh in the Premier League.

Christian Benteke cancelled out Bernard’s opener with his first Palace goal since April.

However, Brazilian Richarlison picked up the ball on the halfway line, drove into the area and struck an unstoppable shot for his ninth league goal of the season.

Although Palace began promisingly, with Patrick van Aanholt’s scruffy shot hitting the post, Everton went ahead after 18 minutes when Theo Walcott created space to deliver a perfect cross for Bernard’s controlled volley.

That was Walcott’s last meaningful contribution as he soon departed with a jarred knee to be replaced by Djibril Sidibe but only after a curious episode saw the Frenchman briefly disappear down the tunnel.

The visitors, who have not won since Boxing Day, struggled to deal with Richarlison’s movement and power but forced their way back into contention.

Everton keeper Jordan Pickford somehow allowed Benteke’s shot to roll under his body in the 51st to end a goal drought that had lasted 1,476 minutes.

Seven minutes later Richarlison scored while Pickford saved point-blank from Benteke, who also hit the post.

Later, Calvert-Lewin put the game beyond Palace in the 88th when he reacted quickest to net after Richarlison’s header hit the bar.

Everton have 36 points from 26 games, a point behind fifth-placed Tottenham Hotspur who currently occupy the Europa League qualifying spot, and five points behind Chelsea in fourth.

“The best thing today is the result, the performance was not so good,” said Everton manager Carlo Ancelotti, whose team have played a game more than their rivals for the European spots.

“It was a difficult game, a lot of interruptions. We were not able to keep the intensity. Richarlison did a fantastic counter attack and we won for this reason.

“Before the (winter) break, three points is important. We know they have this quality, Richarlison is a fantastic player on the counter attack, he used that situation really well.”

The Italian, who said the bizarre Sidibe incident was a “new experience for me”, stressed that qualifying for Europe was still the club’s target.

“Since I arrived the team did a fantastic job, now we have the possibility to think about the Europa League.”

Palace are in 14th place with 30 points from 26 games, six points above the relegation zone, and have not kept a clean sheet in 10 league games.
Disappointed manager Roy Hodgson described their latest defeat as cruel.

“We know what we have to do. When we moved the ball quickly we asked questions and were close to getting more than one goal.

“The result colours any sort of judgement, so it’s difficult to see the game as clear as you would like.” (Reuters/NAN)

Everton beat Southampton 2-1 for first away win of the season

Southampton(UK), Nov. 9, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) Goals from Tom Davies and Richarlison gave Everton their first away win of the season at Southampton on Saturday.

The victory took some pressure off Toffees manager Marco Silva but put more of it on his opposite number Ralph Hasenhuttl.

The visitors took the lead in the fourth minute when the unmarked Davies headed in a corner kick for his first goal since May 2018, which also came against the Saints.

Everton created the most chances in the first half, while the home side failed to muster a single shot on goal, leading to boos and jeers at the halftime whistle.

The Saints were quick off the blocks in the second half.

And the pressure paid off when halftime substitute Sofiane Boufal beat his marker on the right and squared the ball for Danny Ings to tap in from close range.

But with 15 minutes to go, Djibril Sidibe sent in a pin-point cross to the far post where Richarlison made it 2-1 with a left-footed first-time finish for his first goal in eight league matches.

Sheffield United secure surprise win at Everton

Liverpool (UK), Sept. 21, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) Yerry Mina’s first half own goal and a late Lys Mousset effort gave Sheffield United a smash-and-grab 2-0 win at Everton in an entertaining English Premier League match on Saturday.

The result lifted the Blades to eighth place on eight points from six games while Everton slipped to 14th on seven points after they failed to convert several chances at Goodison Park.

Colombia defender Mina put the ball past his own goalkeeper Jordan Pickford in the 40th minute after the first purposeful move by the visitors resulted in a corner kick.

Everton dominated the opening half and their Brazilian forward Richarlison curled a fine shot inches wide before visiting goalkeeper Dean Henderson kept out a stinging low drive by Lucas Digne.

Everton pressed after the break in search of an equaliser but were caught cold again in the 79th minute.

This was after Mousset latched on to a defence-splitting pass and beat Pickford with a clinical finish to delight the away fans.

Sheffield United held out comfortably in the last 10 minutes as Everton manager deployed Theo Walcott in a desperate attempt to salvage something from a disappointing performance.(Reuters/NAN)

Chelsea lose 0-2 at Everton to derail in top-four chase

Liverpool (UK), March 17, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) Goals from forward Richarlison and midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson helped Everton beat Chelsea 2-0 in the English Premier League on Sunday, denting the London side’s hopes of finishing in the top four.

Brazil’s Richarlison headed Marco Silva’s side in front from close range in the 49th minute after Kepa Arrizabalaga had kept out striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s powerful header from Sigurdsson’s corner kick.

Everton went 2-0 up in the 72nd minute when Sigurdsson put the ball past Arrizabalaga from the rebound after his penalty kick was saved by the Chelsea goalkeeper.

This was after a foul in the box on Richarlison by Marcos Alonso.

“It would be easier for me just to speak about the second half. The first half, I didn’t like it at all. We were not there from the first minute,” Silva said.

“I told our players at half-time they have to do everything different. And they did. They showed great attitude, character and personality.”

Everton were a transformed side in the second half and went close two minutes after the break, when midfielder Andre Gomes forced a save with a stinging shot from distance.

They then took full control of the contest.

Chelsea had been unlucky not to score after a good start.

Eden Hazard’s drive was saved by Jordan Pickford in the sixth minute, before he hit the post a minute later.

Argentina striker Gonzalo Higuain had a shot cleared off the line.

Everton climbed to 11th with 40 points from 31 matches while defeat meant that sixth-placed Chelsea stayed on 57 points from 30 games.

They are a point behind Manchester United above them and three points behind fourth-placed Arsenal.

Coach Maurizio Sarri was at a loss to explain his side’s collapse.

“I don’t know and the players don’t know what happened in the second half,” the Italian said.

“I cannot explain it. We played the best first half in the season and we could have scored four or five and then suddenly we stopped playing. It’s strange and we stopped to defend and counter-attack.

“The problem was mental on the pitch, so the system and the tactics are not important.

“It wasn’t about motivation because we started very well. We have to play eight matches now and we have to fight for our possibilities.” (Reuters/NAN)

Liverpool held in goalless derby at Everton to stay second

Liverpool (UK), March 3, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) Liverpool were left a point behind English Premier League (EPL) leaders Manchester City on Sunday after they were held to a 0-0 draw by Everton in the Merseyside derby.

Manchester City, who beat Bournemouth 1-0 on Saturday, have 71 points while Juergen Klopp’s Liverpool have 70 after their fourth draw in their last six games.

Both sides have nine matches left.

Mohamed Salah had the two best openings for Liverpool before the break.

But his soft 15th minute shot barely troubled Jordan Pickford and then the Everton goalkeeper was swift off his line to foil the Egyptian as he raced goalwards.

Everton’s approach was to harry and disrupt Liverpool and they did that task well.

But they also struggled to create opportunities with Theo Walcott unable to capitalise on a rare opening, screwing his shot wide.

Salah threatened again in the 57th minute as he bore down on Pickford, but Everton defender Michael Keane stopped a near certain goal with a perfectly timed last-ditch sliding tackle.

Klopp threw on Roberto Firmino in the 63rd minute in an attempt to salvage the situation.

But the striker was unable to open up an Everton defence that raised their game to deal a blow to their local rivals’ title hopes.(Reuters/NAN)

Kane, Son rip Everton apart as Tottenham win 6-2

Liverpool (UK), Dec. 23, 2018 (Reuters/NAN) Tottenham Hotspur showed why manager Mauricio Pochettino is “a wanted man’’ by thrashing hosts Everton 6-2 on Sunday to close to within six points of English Premier League leaders Liverpool.

Spurs have had to cope with the unwanted attention of Pochettino being linked with the Manchester United job following Jose Mourinho’s sacking some days ago.

But they showed no signs of being distracted as they roared back from a goal down at Goodison Park.

Braces from Son Heung-min and Harry Kane, with Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen also on target, did the magic, after Everton had led against the run of play through Theo Walcott.

Even a strike from former Tottenham midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson to reduce the hosts’ deficit to 4-2 early in the second half could not spark a revival.

However, fatigue may still derail Tottenham’s bid to win a first trophy under Pochettino, with Spurs still involved in four competitions.

But with Liverpool facing Arsenal and Manchester City in top-of-the-table clashes in their next three games over the festive period, Tottenham have the opportunity to haul themselves back into it.

They can turn it into a three-way title race if they maintain the standards set at Goodison.

Kane had chipped into the side-netting and Jordan Pickford produced a fine save to deny England teammate Kieran Trippier in the early stages.

But it was Everton who struck first in a wildly-open contest when Walcott stabbed home at the near-post from Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s cross.

Marco Silva’s men could even have been 2-0 up had Calvert-Lewin not been penalised for a push on Davinson Sanchez when heading home moments later.

But Spurs looked as if they could score with almost every attack and were soon on level terms after a Pickford error, when he rushed out from his goal.

The England number one only succeeded in getting in the way of his own defender Kurt Zouma and Son took advantage with a wonderful finish from a narrow angle.

Once back on level terms, Spurs were relentless as Pickford denied Son a second but Alli charged into the box to sweep home the rebound to turn the game around.

Kane is now just one goal behind Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang in the race for the English Premier League golden boot and showed his predatory instincts to side-foot into an empty net.

This was after Trippier’s fine free-kick came back off the post three minutes before half-time.

However, there was no let-up in the game’s pace after the break as Eriksen produced a technical and perfectly-controlled volley from the penalty box edge to make it 4-1.

Three minutes later Everton’s deficit was back to two as Sigurdsson dribbled across the whole Tottenham defence before firing back across Hugo Lloris.

Yet, any hope of a fightback was extinguished just after the hour mark when Son’s fine control cushioned Erik Lamela’s pass before he finished through the legs of Pickford.

It was announced some days agao that the South Korean would go to the Asian Cup in January.

This was in spite of his already representing his country at the FIFA World Cup and Asian Games earlier this year.

And Son showed why he would be missed by his club in January once more.

An inch-perfect cross was his contribution for Kane to slide in for his second of the afternoon 16 minutes from time.

Both teams face the least rest time of any English Premier League side over the festive period with another three games to come between now and New Year’s Day.(Reuters/NAN)

Everton’s Iceland midfielder Sigurdsson out for up to 8 weeks

Liverpool (UK), March 14, 2018 (Reuters/NAN) Everton’s Iceland midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson is expected to return to action from a knee injury in six to eight weeks, the English Premier League club said on Wednesday.

The club’s statement therefore goes on to allay concerns that he could miss out on the 2018 FIFA World Cup to be hosted by Russia.

Sigurdsson was injured against Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday, raising doubts about his fitness for the finals in Russia starting in June.

But following a consultation with a specialist the prognosis is not as bad as first feared.

The 28-year-old, who has four league goals and three assists for Everton this season, is Iceland’s main creative force and his absence from the tournament would have been a major blow.

“We’ll continue to assess Gylfi’s progress on a week-to-week basis,” Everton manager Sam Allardyce said on the club website.

“The medical team will work very closely with him… to get him back playing as quickly as possible,” he said.

Iceland are in the same group with the Super Eagles at Russia 2018 along with Argentina and Croatia.

Walcott grabs brace as Everton beat Leicester

Abuja, Feb. 1, 2018 (Reuters/NAN) Theo Walcott scored twice in his second appearance for Everton as they beat Leicester City 2-1 at home on Wednesday to move further clear of English Premier League relegation danger.

Walcott, who joined Everton from Arsenal for about 20 million pounds in the current transfer window, converted Gylfi Sigurdsson’s low cross from close range after 26 minutes.

He then volleyed home before half-time to double the lead.

Jamie Vardy reduced the arrears from the penalty kick spot deep into the second half.

This was after the referee spotted a Wayne Rooney foul on Wilfred Ndidi, to set up a nervy finale for the hosts in which Leicester’s Kelechi Iheanacho twice hit the woodwork.

Everton, who flirted with relegation danger earlier in the season, are ninth in the table while Leicester are three points above Sam Allardyce’s side in seventh.(Reuters/NAN)

Lukaku grabs brace as Everton ends Leicester’s winning run

Abuja, April 9, 2017 (NAN) Romelu Lukaku on Sunday scored twice to check Leicester’s renaissance in the English Premier League (EPL) under manager Craig Shakespeare as Everton beat the Foxes 4-2.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the win ensured that the Toffees moved within goals difference of Arsenal in sixth.

Tom Davies poked in for the hosts after 30 seconds, before Leicester rallied with a slick counter-attacking goal from Islam Slimani and a superb free-kick from Marc Albrighton.

But Leicester, much changed before Wednesday’s Champions League quarter-final at Atletico Madrid, never looked comfortable.

Lukaku headed in a Ross Barkley cross to draw Everton level and Phil Jagielka was allowed too much space at a corner kick as the Toffees reached the break ahead.

Lukaku drilled in from close range after the interval and the withdrawal of the bright Demarai Gray and striker Jamie Vardy seemed to signal Leicester’s attentions turning towards Europe.

In another EPL match played earlier on Sunday, Sunderland’s hopes of avoiding relegation suffered another setback as Manchester United eased to a 3-0 victory to climb to fifth in the table.

Sunderland played with 10 men for more than 45 minutes after Sebastian Larsson’s controversial red card for a challenge on Ander Herrera.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic had already put United ahead with a sublime, curling 20-yard effort.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan made it 2-0 before Marcus Rashford drilled in the third.

Sunderland are 10 points from safety with just seven games left and have not scored for seven matches.

United, who move above Arsenal, are four points behind fourth-placed Manchester City with one game in hand over their neighbours.(NAN)
