Expect adequate facilities soon, FUOYE VC assures students

Ikole-Ekiti (Ekiti State), Feb. 12, 2020 (NAN) Prof. Kayode Soremekun, Vice Chancellor, Federal University, Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), on Wednesday, said that efforts were in top gear to provide adequate  facilities for the over 20,000 students of the institution.

Soremekun, who disclosed this in Ikole-Ekiti, shortly after inspecting some of the newly-built faculty buildings and other projects completed by his administration, assured that more buildings and facilities would be provided before the end of the year.

He said that the newly-built structures were completed in record time to further create an enabling environment for teaching and learning in the institution.

“I must say that I am delighted that FUOYE is developing on daily basis, with the establishment of some faculties and upgrade of facilities.

“I can attribute this to God and my culture of excellence. If you do a research about my background, you will find out that I am somebody who derives joy in excellent performance.

“We have been able to complete faculties of management, engineering, agriculture and other notable ones in due time to further create an enabling environment for our students because we cherish education in FUOYE.

“The faculties of basic science, pharmacy and the mass communication studio were located in phase three; they are not accessible because of the roads leading to the buildings.

“ Hopefully, before the end of February, the roads will be reconstructed to ease free movement of vehicles.

“We have also completed our mass communication studio which is well- equipped to train our students, and very soon, FUOYE will be broadcasting from the studio.

“ We are working hard to make available lots of facilities for our over 20,000 students. So before the end of 2020, more buildings and facilities will be in place,” he said.

The vice chancellor solicited for more support from the members of staff of the university and further appealed to them for more patience with the management, promising to prioritise their welfare with friendly policies.

He advised the students to make judicious use of the facilities and imbibe maintenance culture. (NAN)

Keffi (Nasarawa State), Aug. 22, 2019 (NAN) Alhaji Abdulrahman Maigoro,the Executive Chairman, Keffi Local Government Council of Nasarawa State, has promised to provide better healthcare and infrastructural facilities to rural communities in the area.
This is contained in a statement issued by his media aide, Mr Shuaibu Muhammad, a copy of which was made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Keffi on Thursday.
Maigoro said the strategy would create job opportunities and improve on the lives of the people.
He emphasised that his desire was to better the health status and standard of living of people of the area.
The chairman said that the council has approved drilling of a borehole at the Local Government Guest House and other water projects to deliver water supply to the people.
“Human beings cannot sustain themselves without water, hence the need for the project and other projects that will have direct bearing on the lives of the people of this area,” he said.
Maigoro said: “With the view of providing the much needed dividends of democracy to the people at the grassroots through initiation of projects.
“We urged the good people of Keffi LGA to remain focus and be patient as good things are on the way coming for the development of their communities.
“We will provide infrastructural faculties as well as initiate skills acquisition programmes to enable our people have different skills to become self reliant.’’
According to him, the committee also approved repair of abandoned vehicles in the council to facilitate effective service delivery.
He commended the legislative arm and other workers of the council for giving him maximum support and cooperation to succeed.
The chairman however called on Nigerians to support President Muhammadu Buhari and Gov. Abdullahi Sule to enable them to succeed in the tasks ahead of them.
He also urged Nigerians to live in peace and tolerate one another irrespective of their affiliations for the overall development of the country. (NAN)

Bauchi, March 14, 2019 (NAN) Dr Adamu Muhammed, the Bauchi State Project Coordinator, Nigerian States Health Investment Project (NSHIP), says government has disbursed more than N272 million to participating health facilities across the state.
Muhammed disclosed this at a meeting of the three participating local government healthcare authorities of the Performance Based Financing (PBF) steering committee for fourth quarter 2018, in Bauchi on Thursday.
“The sum of N272,666,103 is to be shared among health facilities participating in the Additional Financing Nigeria State Health Investment Project (AF-NSHIP) from Bauchi, Dass and Katagum Local Government Areas.
Mohammed said the money disbursed was for subsidy earnings, for the fourth quarter of 2018.
According to him, Bauchi local government was paid N110,752,934; Dass N85,467,149; and Katagum N76,746,020.
He pointed out that the amount was approved after the validation of the fourth quarter invoice by the committee.
Mohammed explained that the presentations of independent verifier showed improvement in domains of outpatient, referral, antenatal care, maternity, family planning and children who complete their immunisation schedules.
“The least performing domains are growth monitoring among children 0-23 months and 23-5 years; individual psycho-social counselling and HIV mothers breastfeeding and receiving ARV.
“Unlike third quarter of 2018, where five health facilities in Katagum and Bauchi were sanctioned. This time all facilities performed well,” he said.
Responding on behalf of the three local government PHC Directors, Alhaji Bako Gamawa, commended NSHIP for the intervention.
He said the disbursement would boost health services in participating health facilities in the benefitting local government areas. (NAN)

Bauchi, March 7, 2019 (NAN) The Bauchi State Government has promised to provide solar power systems in public health facilities to enhance blood banks and save lives.
Gov. Mohammed Abubakar said this at the presentation of manifestos in Bauchi on Wednesday.
Abubakar said there was need to complement electricity supply to its health facilities to enhance blood bank services across the state.
He said the state government was determined to provide solar system in all its health facilities across the state to complement electricity supply at the facilities.
According to him, the solar system will improve power supply in the primary, secondary and tertiary health facilities and improve blood bank services in the state.
He said the plan was to reduce the death of mothers and newborns resulting from lack of blood in hospitals.
“You know the importance of blood banks especially in saving lives of pregnant women and newborns cannot be over emphasised.
“We have strategised to establish functional blood banks in all the general hospitals in Bauchi State and health facilities at the primary healthcare level.
Abubakar said that the state government had revamped healthcare system through increasing salaries and remuneration of doctors and health workers. (NAN)

Abuja, Nov. 1, 2019 (NAN) Head teachers of secondary and primary schools in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have called on the administration to provide more teachers, classrooms, dormitories, seats and teaching aid facilities to the schools.

The call was made by principals and schools’ heads when the Acting Secretary, FCT Education Secretariat, Dr Bala Liman, made a familiarization visits to some schools in territory on Thursday in Abuja.

The schools include Model Secondary School, Maitama; Government Secondary School, Gosa (Airport Road); Junior Secondary School and Primary School Pasali; Government Secondary School and Government Girls Science Secondary School, Kuje.

At Maitama, the Principal, Mrs Patience Oti, told the acting secretary that the school has 520 students with 67 to 70 in a class.

“We have a combined class of SS 3C and D having more than 140 students with 68 teaching staff, having 39 female teachers and only five mathematics teachers,’’ she said.

Oti called for more teaching staff, chairs and desks, and completion of abandoned school hall.

At GSS Gosa, Mr Muhammad Tanko, Vice Principal (Admin.), said SS are over 500 while JSS 1 to 3 has over 1000 students with over 80 students in a class that SS level was supposed to have not more than 40 in a class.

Tanko who also disclosed that the SS section has 20 teaching staff while the JSS has 27 teaching staff, appealed for more desks, chairs and classrooms.

Mrs Adekunle Fumilayo, Head Teacher who represented the Headmaster, LEA Primary School, Gosa, said the school has over 800 pupils but also are looking for classroom accommodation.

Mrs Mary Daniel, Principal, JSS Pasali, said every class is joint class of special needs and regular students with over 2000 students in the school and having 100 students in a class.

She complained that a contract was awarded in 2015 for the renovation of four blocks of four classrooms but the contractor did not complete the renovation and absconded from the site.

At the GSS Kuje, the Principal, Hajia Fatima AbdulRahman, said the total number of the students is 2900 with 110 teaching staff and 52 non-teaching staff.

She called for the building of Government Day Secondary School, Kuje, in order to decongest the school which has some classes with about 80 students.

AbdulRahman solicited for more teachers and renovation of a burnt hostel which was destroyed in September as a result of using charcoal iron.

She said MTN renovated the Biology Laboratory and gave the school a bus while DSTV supported the school with power point as teaching aid and decoder.

When the acting secretary visited GGSSS Kuje, Mrs Umoga Bassey, the Principal told him that the school has over 800 students though the new SS1 students were still reporting, she added that the school also has 48 teaching staff.

She also appealed for more teaching staff and classroom space to reduce the number of students in a class.

Responding, Liman said he undertook the visit to get firsthand information on the challenges at the schools and seek a way to improve the system.

“Some of the issues were highlighted by the FCT Minister, Malam Muhammad Bello. One of the issues is on the decongestion of the classrooms.

“He has asked Education Resource Centre and the relevant directories to try to ensure that we reduce the number of students per class.

“To do that on the same hand we realised that we also have to increase the number of teaching staff because if we reduce the number of the students per class we must have more teachers to teach them,’’ he said.

Liman said he has requested for comprehensive list of all the projects to see exactly when they were awarded and address the issues.

According to him, “and taking a cue from what the minister is doing, we will try not to initiate new projects until we finish the outstanding projects, I think that is key here”. (NAN)

Kafanchan (Kaduna), March 1, 2018 (NAN) Jema’a Local Government Council of Kaduna State has renovated and equipped four Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs) to meet the health needs of rural dwellers.
Alhaji Yusuf Usman, the Administrator of the council, disclosed this on Thursday at the handing over of one of the healthcare centres at Gidan Waya.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the benefiting communities include Atuku, Godogodo, Gidan Waya and Maigizo wards.
The projects were the construction of new staff quarters for each of the PHCs.
Usman, who visited each of the benefiting communities, expressed satisfaction with the projects, adding that the aim was to impact positively on the people.
“Under the State Government policy of `255’, virtually all wards within the local council would be equipped with a functional PHC.
“The projects were made possible due to the support and determination of Gov. Nasir El-Rufai who prioritised rural development and has created the conducive environment for us to execute these projects,” he said.
Usman said rehabilitation of the Takau, Kafanchan A and B PHCs would soon be completed and put to use.
He advised the health workers at the respective centres to redouble their dedication to duty, urging the benefiting communities to support the workers by ensuring the safety and sanity of the centres.
Responding, Alhaji Buhari Adamu, the Dakachin Gidan Waya, representing the traditional rulers, thanked the government for the good work and for considering the welfare of the people.
Adamu assured of the community’s resolve to safeguard the healthcare facilities. (NAN)

Keffi (Nasarawa State), Nov. 1, 2017 (NAN) Some residents of Nasarawa State have called on the State Government to close down all illegal health facilities to prevent further loss of lives.
The residents also urged the government to make the closure of such a routine exercise in order to tackle the activities of quacks and improve their health condition.
They made the appeal on Wednesday in separate interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Keffi, Keffi Local Government Area of the state.
However, the residents lauded the state government for shutting down some illegal health facilities in some local government areas of the state as part of measures to tackle quackery in the state.
NAN recalls that the state government recently shut down over 40 private hospitals, clinics and laboratories in Karu Local Government of the state over not adherence to due process.
NAN also recalls that the state government through the Ministry of Health closed 20 illegal health facilities in October in Akwanga Local Government Area of the state.
The residents noted that the measure would go a long way in tackling quackery as well as improve the health condition of people in the area.
Mr Samson Moses, a resident, said that the state government’s efforts in tackling the activities of quacks across the state deserved commendation and called for its sustenance.
“Our appeal is that we want the state government to make the closure of illegal health facilities to be a routine exercise in order to tackle quackery and improve on the health of the people of the state,” he said.
Another resident, Mrs Zainab Mohammed, said that the closure of the illegal clinics would sanitise the health sector in the state.
She urged those involved in illegal operation of health facilities to desist from such in the interest of the wellbeing of the people.
Dr Haruna Ekom, who led the inspection team from the state Ministry for Health during the closure of illegal health facilities in Akwanga, decried the increasing rate of quackery in the health sector.
According to him, the illegal activities in the sector are affecting the health status of the people.
Ekom, who is the Director of Clinical Service in the ministry, said that the exercise was not aimed at witch hunting anybody but to ensure that ethnical practices are observed in the sector.
The director said the state government appreciates and acknowledges the contribution of private health establishments, noting however that the right thing must be done to sanitise the system and save lives.
He restated government’s commitment to initiate more health policies in order to save human lives and called on the public to report quack medical practitioners to the ministry for appropriate action. (NAN)

Lafia, May 10, 2017 (NAN) Pathfinder International Nigeria and Partnership for Advocacy in Child and Family Health (PACFaH), NGOs, have said that only 171 out of 808 public health facilities were providing Family Planning (FP) services in Nasarawa State.

Dr Yemi Osanyin, Pathfinder Consultant, made this known on Wednesday in Lafia during a one-day dissemination of the findings of Family Planning Situation Analysis in the state, organised by the group in collaboration with the state government.

He explained that the aim of the workshop was to present a draft report on the FP situation in the state with the view of encouraging women and girls to embrace FP programmes, considering its enormous benefits.

Osanyin identified ignorance/lack of knowledge, cultural and religious beliefs, funding, political will and inaccessibility as the major factors affecting FP, hence the need for the partnership.

“The NGO entered into partnership with Nasarawa state government on family planning to reduce maternal mortality in the state.

“Only 171 out of 808 public health facilities (21%) in the state are providing Family Planning services and mostly short term methods as only 66 of 292 private health facilities are providing family planning services actively,’’ he said.

Osanyin urged the state government to give FP programmes the needed priority through adequate funding, and ensure that FP contraceptives and other services are available in public facilities.

“What we are doing today is to disseminate findings of the Family Planning Situation Analysis in Nasarawa state, that is a cost implementation plan of the state, how do we support women to have safe delivery and to know when the next pregnancy will come.

“Because the importance of family planning cannot be over-emphasised, it strengthens the health of the woman directly and the man indirectly as it enables the woman rests adequately in-between pregnancies and child delivery, and makes significant contributions to reduced maternal mortality.

“It enables the couple prepare adequately for next pregnancy and children, and enables sexually active women and girls to protect themselves from unwanted pregnancies.

“There is the need to remove barriers in access by women and girls and to redouble efforts in the procurement of family planning contraceptive commodities for effective service delivery,” he said.

Also speaking, Mrs Aanu Rotimi, of PACFaH also urged women to embrace FP programmes, as it would stop women and girls from having unwanted pregnancy.

Rotimi also called on the state government to take full ownership by giving FP programmes the necessary supports in term of funding and financing.

She restated the commitment of the organisations to continue to educate women and the people on the need to embrace FP in the interest of their health and for the overall development of the country.

Dr Madawa Absalom, the Director, state Primary Health Care Development Agency, had earlier said that the state government has invested so much in the health sector to better the health of people of the state.

Absalom also said that the state government was ready to partner with any organisation to improve on the health status of its citizenry, since a healthy nation is a wealthy nation.

The workshop was attended by the State House of Assembly Committee members on Health, and health experts, among other stakeholders and policy makers in the state. (NAN)

Kano, April 25, 2017 (NAN) The Kano State Government is to establish one apex health facility in all the 484 electoral wards as part of effort to boost healthcare delivery in rural areas.

The state Commissioner for Health, Dr Kabiru Getso, disclosed this while briefing newsmen as part of activities to commemorate the World Malaria Day on Tuesday in Kano.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the World Health Assembly set aside April 25, as World Malaria Day to commemorate, reflect and assess collective progress towards elimination of Malaria globally.

He said establishing the facility was necessary in order to provide minimum package of care especially in rural areas which is in line with President Muhammadu Buhari’s agenda of establishing one functional primary healthcare per ward.

He said the state government had fully assessed no fewer than 185 primary healthcare centres, pointing out that 85 are being upgraded to functional status.

He said the state government had also planned to employ over 100 healthcare workers in addition to the 500 that had been employed to ensure provision of adequate human resources for the health sector.

“Operation of policy of ‘no embargo’ on employment of critical manpower for health sector is still in force,’’ Getso said.

According to him, the state government had supported the provision of drugs and other health commodities to health facilities through a DRF programme being run by the state.

On malaria, the commissioner said between January and March, the state recorded 321,532 fever cases out of which 304,520 cases were tested for malaria by rapid diagnostic test (RDT) and microscopy.

He explained that out of the 304,520 cases that tested for malaria, 192,433 were found to be positive out of which 179,939 cases were given free treatment with ACT drug.

However, he advised residents to ensure consistent environmental sanitation and hygiene, early health seeking behavior and regular ante-natal visits to curb the menace of malaria in the state. (NAN)
