NSCDC arrests fake eye doctor in Adamawa

Yola, July 9, 2019 (NAN) The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Adamawa has arrested an alleged fake Optometrist operating in Yola.
Addressing newsmen on Tuesday in Yola, the state Commandant of the corps, Mr Nuraddeen Abdullahi, said the suspect, Imuere Ejiro, before his arrest, was allegedly rendering services in two private clinics in Yola.
Abdullahi said the suspect was arrested in possession of photocopies of academic qualification belonging to his younger brother.
He said the suspect was once arrested in Lagos by the Optometrists and Dispensing Opticians’ Registration Board of Nigeria, which fined him N200,000.
The commandant, who called for more public support to security agencies in the state, said there was a joint operation going on with other agencies to make things difficult for criminals in the state.
“The NSCDC has also sent some of its personnel to training as Agro-Rangers to contain farmers/herders conflicts in the state,” Abdullahi said.
Reacting to his arrest, the suspect said he operated in Taraba, Lagos and Adamawa states before his arrest.
Ejiro, who insisted that he was a qualified optometrist, said his arrest in Lagos was because he was practicing without registration.
“The board asked me to pay registration fee of N255,000 and I have so far made part payment of N65,000 to the board,” the suspect said.
Meanwhile, the Adamawa branch Chairman of Nigerian Optometric Association, Dr Okafor Ikechukwu, said the association had made contacts and discovered that the suspect was a quack.
“He is a quack and impostor who has been defrauding citizens of Adamawa of their hard earned money and at the same time putting their eye sight at risk by prescribing lens which is not licensed,” Ikechukwu said. (NAN)

Yola, June 20, 2019 (NAN) The Department of State Services (DSS) has confirmed the arrest of the Principal Medical Director of Fufore Cottage Hospital in Adamawa, Ibrahim Mustapha, for operating with fake medical certificate.
Mr Bola Olori, the Director of DSS in the state, told newsmen on Thursday in Yola preliminary investigations show that Mustapha did not study medicine but holds the National Board of Technical Education (NBTE) certificate.
“He perfected the illicit act of impersonation as doctor in Gombe where he worked as a ward attendant in several clinics.
“He was aided in the act by a practicing doctor who gave him sample copies of his NECO result, MBBS of Bayero University Kano, NYSC discharge certificate and that of the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria annual registration license, all of which he forged,” Olori said.
The director said that Mustapha was employed by Adamawa Health Management Board as a doctor in October 2015, rose to the position of Principal Medical Officer and served as such in the cottage hospitals of Mayo-Belwa and Fufore.
“Prior to his arrest, the suspect had in the last five years performed hundreds of surgical operations in several hospitals in the state,” Olori said.
The director, who thanked the state officials of the state branch of the Nigerian Medical Association for their role in tracking the suspect, said that the suspect and his accomplice now in custody would be prosecuted at the conclusion of investigations.
He enjoined the public to be wary of such unscrupulous elements and alert security agencies for necessary action.
Speaking to newsmen, the suspect said he had no regret because he knew what he was doing and that he had performed successful medical operations.
“I even assist some qualified medical doctors to do the right thing.
“It’s unfortunate that someone from Gombe were I once worked who was envious of me decided to expose me after I was cleared to be part of Adamawa Medical team to this year’s Hajj, but the person failed to qualify in that interview,” Mustapha said. (NAN)

Abuja, Nov. 7, 2018 (NAN) The Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) has raised alarm over series of fake medical reports being obtained by Nigerians to further their interest.
Dr Ekpe Phillips, the FCT NMA Chairman, said this while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NMA) on Wednesday in Abuja.
He said that the burden of fake medical reports had littered everywhere, adding that many had been caught in the act.
According to him, “we have severally caught non-medical personnel carrying out major surgeries’’.
He said such act should no longer be tolerated in the society with the new advent of Doctor’s stamp.
The NMA chairman said that Nigerians had perennially suffered in the hands of fake medical and health personnel which had endangered the health of the country.
He said that the use of Doctor’s stamp would help to put a stop to quackery, adding that forgery will soon be a thing of the past.
Philips stated that the association would join hands with the Federal Government in sanitising the nation’s health system.
He said that a situation where an individual could successfully infiltrate the industry of health to the extent of becoming the leader of NMA at the Federal Ministry of Health would no longer be acceptable.
“Of note is the infiltration at the Federal Ministry of Health, to the extent that the individual became a leader of NMA in FMOH,” he recalled. (NAN)

Kano, May 4, 2017 (NAN) The Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-corruption Commission says it has uncovered 1,108 fake traders in allocation of shops at the Kwari market in Kano metropolis.

The Chairman of the commission, Mr Muhuyi Rimingado, disclosed this at the unveiling of NIPOST Anti-corruption Stamps at the Coronation Hall, Government House, Kano on Thursday.

Rimingado said that the commission undertook a biometric screening of the affected traders to ascertain the genuine owners of shops at the market.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the exercise followed the decision by the State Government to reconstruct the market in order to provide access roads and other facilities.

He said the exercise which was conducted on the instruction of Gov. Abdullahi Ganduje was aimed at entrenching transparency and accountability in the allocation of shops to traders.

The chairman said in the course of the exercise, 3,468 traders were initially submitted to the commission by the government for verification.

“The first verification revealed that 2,823 traders were screened as `yan tebura traders’ (mobile traders), while the second verification conducted through the biometric capture exercise showed that only 2,359 were genuine traders,’’ he said.

Besides, Rimingado disclosed that the commission had recovered huge sums of money in cash from 2015 to date in addition to movable and immovable properties allegedly stolen from Kano state government.

He added that the commission recently recruited 120 workers as part of effort to strengthen the manpower needed by the anti-graft agency.

According to him, the commission would continue to give priority attention to training and retraining of its personnel to enhance their productivity.

“The commission has also provided electronic attendance machine to enhance punctuality and productivity which is the first of its kind in the state,” said Rimingado. (NAN)

Keffi (Nasarawa State), May 4, 2017 (NAN) The Vice Chancellor, Nasarawa State University, Keffi, Prof. Muhammed Akaro-Mainoma, said the institution has recorded 113 cases of fake certificates by students between 2014 and 2016.

Akaro-Mainoma disclosed this in Keffi on Thursday while briefing newsmen ahead of the 5th combined convocation of the institution scheduled for May 6.

He restated his commitment to make the institution a world class and research centre, warning that there is no room for students with fake certificates.

“Before a student will graduate, we have a committee that will screen all WAEC/SSCE results of students and from 2014 to 2016, we discovered 113 cases of fake certificates,’’ he said.

He said that about 30,000 graduates comprising 21,442 undergraduates for seven sessions of 2008 to 2006, and 8,270 postgraduate students would be graduating.

According to him, students who distinguished themselves would receive awards, and prominent Nigerians who also distinguished themselves would be recipients of honorary doctorate degrees.

Akaro-Mainoma said that the institution have 54 academic programmes for undergraduates with eight faculties.

He added that 195 programmes are offered at the Post Graduate Diploma (PGD), Masters and Doctor of Philosophy levels.

The vice chancellor said that out of the 45 academic programmes approved by the National Universities Commission, 44 have full accreditation status.

He added that efforts were being made to get nine additional programmes accredited, bringing the total number of academic programmes at undergraduate level to 54.

Akaro mainoma commended the Nasarawa State Government and TETFUND for contributing to the educational advancement of the institution.

He restated the commitment of the institution to continue to initiate good educational policies and programmes to improve on the welfare of staff and students. (NAN)
