Ighalo scores as Manchester United, Wolves, Roma move into last 16, FC Porto, Arsenal, Ajax out

Manchester (UK), Feb. 28, 2020 (Reuters/NAN) Manchester United and Wolverhampton Wanderers cruised into the Europa League last 16 round with emphatic aggregate wins on Thursday, but while AS Roma squeezed through, Sporting and Porto were eliminated.

Manchester United breezed to a 6-1 aggregate win over Club Bruges after a 5-0 return leg rout of the Belgians at Old Trafford, with new signing Odion Ighalo among the scorers.

Wolves advanced with a 6-3 overall victory against Espanyol in spite of a 3-2 second-leg defeat in Spain.

Arsenal suffered a shock exit to Olympiakos Piraeus on away goals after a 2-1 extra-time home defeat.

The Portuguese trio of Benfica, Sporting and FC Porto as well as Ajax Amsterdam and Celtic were also eliminated.

Odion Ighalo celebrated his first start for Manchester United with his maiden goal for the club after Bruno

Fernandes had fired the home side ahead with a 27th-minute penalty kick.

The penalty kick had produced a red card for Club Bruges defender Simon Deli.

The centre-back was dismissed after he dived in goalkeeping fashion to handle a Daniel James shot before Fernandes sent Simon Mignolet the wrong way with the spot-kick.

Scot McTominay made it 3-0 on the night with a fine first-time shot from 18 metres just before the break.

And Brazilian midfielder Fred put the icing on the cake with a late brace for United, who won Europe’s second-tier competition in 2016.

Wolves took a 4-0 first-leg lead to Espanyol and never looked in danger as Adama Traore scrambled in a close-range effort.

Matt Doherty also scored as they twice cancelled out goals from Jonathan Calleri who scored a hat-trick.

AS Roma, 1-0 winners against Gent in the first leg, looked to have a struggle on their hands when Jonathan David leveled the tie on aggregate after 25 minutes.

However, Justin Kluivert eased the Serie A side’s nerves with a quick equaliser as they progressed.

Bayer Leverkusen blew FC Porto away with a 3-1 win on the road after taking a 2-1 lead in Germany last week.

They completed the job with goals from Lucas Alario, Kerem Demirbay and Kai Havertz, before Moussa Marega netted a consolation for the home side.

Sporting exited after losing 4-1 at Istanbul Basaksehir following extra time to go down 5-4 on aggregate.

This was after Edin Visca gave the hosts a lifeline with a late goal in normal time and then netted a penalty kick to take them through.

Vfl Wolfsburg beat Swedish side Malmo 3-0 away to breeze through 5-1 on aggregate.

FC Basel also progressed with a 1-0 home win over APOEL Nicosia for a 4-0 aggregate success.(Reuters/NAN)

FC Porto forward Marega walks off pitch after racist abuse

Porto (Portugal), Feb. 16, 2020 (Reuters/NAN) FC Porto striker Moussa Marega left the pitch in protest at being subjected to racist insults during his side’s 2-1 win away to Vitoria Guimaraes in Portugal’s Primeira Liga on Sunday.

The 28-year-old Mali forward scored what proved to be the winning goal in the 60th minute.

He celebrated the goal by pointing to his skin in response to a section of the home fans who had targeted him throughout the match.

The player was shown a yellow card for the reaction and after the abuse continued he tried to leave the pitch, pointing his thumbs down to the crowd.

But he was restrained by his team mates for a number of minutes.

FC Porto coach Sergio Conceicao was eventually forced to substitute Marega in the 72nd minute.

“We are completely indignant,” Conceicao told reporters.

“They insulted Marega since the warm-up. We are all a family here, regardless of our nationality, skin colour, height or the colour of our hair and we all deserve respect.

“What happened here is outrageous.

“I know the fans here are very passionate about their club and many fans are not represented by some of the people who were in the crowd today.”

Marega later posted a message on Instagram calling the supporters who targeted him as “idiots”.

“I’d also like to show my thanks to the referee who did not defend me and who gave me a yellow card for defending the colour of my skin.

“I hope I never meet you on a football pitch ever again. You are a disgrace,” he added.

Porto’s director of communications Francisco Marques added on his own Twitter account: “Marega was fed up and left the pitch and FC Porto was forced to make a substitution due to racism.”

Portuguese newspaper A Bola reported that no FC Porto players spoke to the media after the game in solidarity with Marega.

Vitoria coach Ivo Vieira said he did not want to comment on the incident as he was not sure about what had happened.

“I prefer not to speak about a situation without being aware of all the facts. But if the player was provoked, then he should not have been,” he said.

FC Porto are second in the Portuguese top flight, trailing leaders Benfica by a point after 21 games.(Reuters/NAN)

Casillas included in FC Porto squad for new season

Lisbon, Aug. 9, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) FC Porto’s goalkeeper Iker Casillas, who suffered a heart attack in May, has been registered by the club to play in this season’s Portuguese league.

The 38-year-old former Spain and Real Madrid goalkeeper features in the FC Porto squad list which has been published on the league’s official website.

The publication has come ahead of their opening game away to Gil Vicente on Saturday.

Casillas had captained Spain to their only FIFA World Cup triumph in 2010 and played 725 games for Real Madrid before joining FC Porto in 2015.

He suffered a heart attack in a training session on May 1 and spent five days in hospital.

Two weeks later, Portuguese sports newspaper O Jogo suggested that Casillas would shortly announce his retirement.

However, in July, FC Porto said Casillas had been given a role on the team’s technical staff “while he recovers from his health problem.”

FC Porto last month signed Argentine goalkeeper Agustin Marchesin from Mexico City club America.

Salah shines as clinical Liverpool see off FC Porto in UEFA Champions League

Porto (Portugal), April 17, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) A resurgent Mohamed Salah scored one and set up another to inspire a Liverpool to a 4-1 win over FC Porto in their UEFA Champions League quarter-final second leg on Wednesday.

The 6-1 aggregate victory has however teed them up for a last-four clash with FC Barcelona of Spain.

They held off FC Porto in the early stages at Porto before Salah and Sadio Mane combined for the Senegalese to put them ahead with their first shot on target.

The goal was however given after a VAR review.

Egypt striker Salah doubled the tally after the break and goals from Roberto Firmino and Virgil van Dijk wrapped it up late on.

The Portuguese side had briefly reduced the arrears through Eder Militao, but having lost the first leg 2-0 at Anfield, they never seemed in a position to overturn the deficit.

FC Barcelona had advanced on Tuesday when they won 3-0 in their second leg tie against Manchester United, completing a 4-0 aggregate victory.

Five-times European champions Liverpool, who had produced a scintillating display to beat FC Porto 5-0 in the last-16 at the Dragao stadium last season, had a totally different approach this time.

They soaked up the pressure as Porto made an adventurous start, with Jesus Corona curling a powerful shot just over the bar in the opening minute.

Juergen Klopp’s side looked temporarily toothless, but they were just waiting for their moment — which came in the 26th minute.

Mane latched onto a cross from Salah to beat Iker Casillas from close range but he was initially flagged offside, only for referee Danny Makkelie to check the VAR.

After a two-minute review, the goal was eventually given.

Facing the huge task of scoring four goals to qualify, FC Porto looked stunned, in spite of having attempted 15 shots before the interval.

Salah, who endured a goal drought in March, confirmed he was getting close to his best again when he coolly slotted the ball past Casillas.

That was after collecting a perfect diagonal through ball from Trent Alexander-Arnold in the 65th minute.

It was Salah’s first 2018/2019 UEFA Champions League goal since December, and his first away from Anfield in the competition in 12 months.

Militao soothed the home fans’ suffering a little, beating Roberto Firmino in the air to head home in the 69th minute.

Brazilian Firmino, who had started on the bench as Klopp handed a rare start to Divock Origi, made it 3-1 with a downward header with 13 minutes left.

And Van Dijk headed home a fourth from a corner kick eight minutes later to put the game beyond their hosts.

Tottenham Hotspur will face Ajax Amsterdam in the other semi-final tie of the competition.(Reuters/NAN)

Keita and Firmino give Liverpool 2-0 win over FC Porto

Liverpool (UK), April 9, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) Goals from Naby Keita and Roberto Firmino earned Liverpool a 2-0 win over Porto on Tuesday in their UEFA Champions League quarter-finals first leg match.

Juergen Klopp’s side took the upper hand in the tie but without killing off their Portuguese opponents.

There remains plenty of work to do for the Premier League leaders, who will be disappointed they were unable to gain a bigger advantage for next week’s second leg.

On a bitterly cold night at Anfield, Liverpool were well below their best and Porto deserve credit for a determined performance after going two goals down in 26 minutes.

The visitors fired an early warning shot with Moussa Marega blasting narrowly wide in the second minute.

However, the home side took the lead three minutes later through a Keita shot which deflected off Porto midfielder Oliver Torres and beat the helpless Iker Casillas.

Mohamed Salah then forced Casillas into a low save with a sharp shot on the turn.

But the Egyptian should have done better in the 22nd minute when he placed the ball wide when through on goal, after being played in by a sloppy Porto pass.

Liverpool had their second four minutes later — Jordan Henderson split the Porto defence with a superb pass to Trent Alexander-Arnold, whose low cross was tapped in from close range by Firmino.

The Brazilian should have added to his tally, but blasted over after a good cross from Henderson.

The dangerous Marega then had a low drive well saved by the legs of Liverpool keeper Alisson Becker as Porto showed they were not about to roll over.

Sadio Mane had an effort ruled out for offside three minutes after the interval, but apart from another Marega effort in the 69th minute there were few clear-cut chances in the second half.

The Portuguese side fought well to stay in the game in a scrappy second half to give themselves a chance of a comeback at home in next week’s second leg. (Reuters/NAN)

UEFA Champions League: FC Porto go through with extra time VAR penalty kick

Porto (Portugal), March 7, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) FC Porto converted a penalty kick awarded following a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) review three minutes from the end of extra time to beat AS Roma 3-1 on Wednesday.

The win gave them a 4-3 aggregate victory to advance into the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals, after having lost 1-2 in the first leg.

Fernando went down as he tried to meet Maxi Pereira’s low shot across the face of the goal and, after studying the pitchside monitor, the referee judged in his favour.

He adjudged that his shirt had been tugged by Alessandro Florenzi.

Alex Telles emphatically converted the penalty kick to give Porto a win and heap further pressure on Roma coach Eusebio Di Francesco.

Italian media had said before the match that he was fighting to keep his job.

Tiquinho Soares put Porto ahead in the 26th minute before Daniele De Rossi levelled with a penalty kick before half-time.

Moussa Marega put the Portuguese champions back in front in the 52nd minute, and both sides failed to find the range again thereafter until the extra time decision.(Reuters/NAN)

Zaniolo strikes twice for AS Roma to beat FC Porto

Rome, Feb. 13, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) Two goals from teenager Nicolo Zaniolo earned AS Roma a 2-1 win against FC Porto in their UEFA Champions League last 16 first leg fixture on Tuesday.

The 19-year-old continued his superb breakthrough season by finding the net twice in six second half minutes to become the youngest Italian to score two goals in a Champions League match.

FC Porto substitute Adrian Lopez, however, quickly responded with what could prove to be a crucial away goal.

The result ended a five-match winning run in Europe for FC Porto, who will welcome Roma to the Estadio do Dragao for the second leg on March 6.(Reuters/NAN)
