AC Milan beaten again as Fiorentina stroll to victory at San Siro

Milan (Italy), Sept. 30, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) AC Milan’s nightmare start to the 2019/2020 Serie A season continued on Sunday when they fell to a 3-1 defeat at home to Fiorentina and had a man sent off.

Erick Pulgar put the visitors ahead from the penalty kick spot.

Then, Gaetano Castrovilli doubled their lead, after Mateo Musacchio had been shown a straight red card for a rash challenge early in the second half.

AC Milan goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma saved a Federico Chiesa penalty kick.

But Fiorentina got their third goal through Franck Ribery, before Rafael Leao pulled back a consolation for the hosts with 10 minutes remaining.

AC Milan’s third consecutive defeat in just over a week heaps more pressure on embattled coach Marco Giampaolo and leaves them in 16th place on six points,
one point above the relegation zone.

Serie A: Juventus escape with a point from trip to much-improved Fiorentina

Florence (Italy), Sept. 14, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) Fiorentina were left to rue missed chances after holding Juventus to a 0-0 Serie A draw in Florence on Saturday to end the champions’ perfect start to the season.

Juve arrived at the Stadio Artemio Franchi having won their opening two games and were heavy favourites against a Fiorentina side on zero points and a 16-match winless league run.

Franck Ribery impressed on his first start for the hosts as they created the better chances, but a lack of clinical finishing from Vincenzo Montella’s men helped Juve escape with a point.

Juventus are top of the standings with seven points but could surrender the lead to Inter Milan or Torino before the end of the weekend.

Fiorentina are 16th after collecting their first point of the campaign.

The draw extended Fiorentina’s run of Serie A games without a victory to 17, their worst run in the competition since 1970-71.(Reuters/NAN)

Atalanta send holders Juventus crashing out of Coppa Italia, as Fiorentina maul Roma

Atalanta (Italy), Jan. 31, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) Holders Juventus crashed out of the Coppa Italia on Wednesday with a 3-0 defeat at Atalanta, as striker Duvan Zapata scored twice to continue with his electric form.

Timothy Castagne and Zapata struck in the 37th and 39th minutes to stun the record 13-times winners, with Zapata netting another late on to set up a semi-final clash with Fiorentina.
Atalanta, who earned a 2-2 draw against Serie A leaders Juventus at Bergamo in December, pulled off another surprise result, ensuring Juve would not win the competition for a fifth season running.

Castagne caught out Joao Cancelo and drilled home from the edge of the box to put the hosts ahead, with the Colombian Zapata lashing in the second moments later.

Furious Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri was sent off after throwing his jacket onto the pitch after the second goal.

The Old Lady were not stirred into action, however, and failed to record a single shot on target in the first half.

Zapata pounced for his second in the final stages, taking his tally to 17 goals in his last 10 games across all competitions.

Elsewhere, Federico Chiesa scored a hat-trick as Fiorentina humiliated AS Roma 7-1 to reach the Coppa Italia semi-finals on Wednesday.

Chiesa, the 21-year-old Italy forward, sliced Roma open at will, hitting the post early on and striking twice in the first 18 minutes.

Aleksandar Kolarov pulled one back for the visitors but Luis Muriel restored Fiorentina’s two-goal lead before the break.

Eusebio Di Francesco’s Roma completely collapsed in the second half with Chiesa completing his hat-trick, Giovanni Simeone scoring twice and Marco Benassia also finding the net.

Substitute Eden Dzeko was sent off for the visitors after arguing with the referee to complete a woeful night for the visitors.

Fiorentina coach pays emotional tribute to Astori

Milan (Italy), March 10, 2018 (Reuters/NAN) Fiorentina coach Stefano Pioli paid an emotional tribute to Davide Astori on Saturday as his team prepared for their first match since their captain died suddenly last Sunday.

Pioli, whose side host Benevento in Serie A on Sunday, said he would miss Astori every day.

He also said that he wanted to hug each of the thousands of fans who turned out for the 31-year-old’s funeral on Thursday.

“I had the privilege and the good fortune to get to know him closely in these months, he was a special person and special captain,” said Pioli in the pre-match press conference.

“He always found the right time and the right way to say things to me and his team mates. He was generous, positive, ready to help and altruistic,” added Pioli, his voice trembling at times.

“I miss him every day I go onto the training field and I will miss him every time we play a match.”

Thanking the fans who turned out on Thursday, Pioli said: “Our fans have a huge heart.

“I would like to have hugged each and every one of them to console them and let them console us, so together we could find the strength to go on. I would like to thank the whole world of football.

“The fact that there was such a heartfelt participation, moving and full of solidarity (on Thursday), is down to Davide and everything he transmitted.

“It shows that there are still values and principles in the world, even if the opposite often seems to be the case. It is up to us to follow his example and carry it forward,” Pioli said. (Reuters/NAN)

Fiorentina, Cagliari retire number 13 shirt in memory of late Astori

Florence (Italy), March 6, 2018 (Reuters/NAN) Fiorentina and Cagliari will retire the number 13 shirt worn by defender Davide Astori after the Italy international died on Sunday, the Italian clubs said on Tuesday.

Astori, who made 289 Serie A appearances in 10 seasons, died of a sudden illness on Sunday at the age of 31.

He also played 14 times for the national team and joined Fiorentina on loan in 2015 before the club signed him outright one year later and he went on to become their captain.

He previously spent six seasons at Cagliari and one on loan at AS Roma.

“In honour of Davide #Astori’s memory, @CagliariCalcio and #ACFFiorentina have decided to retire the No. 13 shirt. #DA13,” Fiorentina said on Twitter.

Cagliari posted a similar message.

Astori was found dead in his hotel room on Sunday in Udine where Fiorentina had been due to play Udinese.

Serie A later postponed all Sunday matches.

Italian public prosecutors said on Monday they were to open proceedings to determine whether Astori’s death could be considered as manslaughter.(Reuters/NAN)
