Expert harps on first aid training to avert deaths

Abuja, Dec. 28, 2018 (NAN) Dr Biodun Ogungbo, Neurological Surgeon, Brain and Spine Surgery Consortium(BASS), Abuja, on Friday advised the Federal Governments to train law enforcement agents on first aid treatment during emergencies.
Ogungbo gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja.
He said that civil servants in Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) as well as youth corps members must be knowledgeable in first-aid to preserve life.
“We as doctors and other healthcare practitioners have perhaps not done enough in the communities to empower people with the information and knowledge to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid. We should do more.
“We should do more within the family, in churches and mosques and in our places of work.
“We should start in our own homes and then go into schools to teach and train, and perhaps change attitudes to pain and distress,” he said.
Ogungbo said there was need to know how to be humane so we can resuscitate our humanity, adding that the media should be able to carry first aid training to all Nigerians.
“First aid is necessary in case of burns, heart attacks, heavy bleeding, allergies or even in times of analeptic shock, the timely reaction of one or more people can help stabilise the victim until help arrives.
“One act of kindness can mean the difference between death and life; this is reason enough for people to take to learning the steps and methods involved in first aid.
“It could ensure the right treatment and prevent quacks from ruling the roost in times when one has an accident, a major one or a minor one, the first aid training can come in handy and make sure that the right treatment can reach the person,” he said.
Ogungbo also advised Nigerians to have primary education in terms of first aid administration, be it women at home or teachers at school, to people who work at places where a large confluence of people meets, like malls, theatres or stadia. (NAN)

Abuja, Jan. 12, 2018 (NAN) The Nigeria Red Cross Society (NRCS) has advised organisations, employees and individuals to provide First Aid training and services at work places to meet emergency needs.
Mr Taiye Olaniyi, the Chairman, Nigerian Red Cross Society, FCT Branch, gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Friday.

Olaniyi explained that First Aid is the assistance given to any person suffering a sudden illness or injury, with care provided to preserve life, prevent the condition from worsening, or to promote recovery.
He said that First Aid was a humanitarian action that should be accessible to all individuals, adding that the knowledge should be acquired by all individuals in the society irrespective of their status.
Olaniyi noted that accidents and sudden illnesses could occur at work places, homes, schools or the market place, hence the need for training and provision of First Aid kits.
According to him, significant numbers of working hours are lost each year in many organisations due to injuries and illnesses at work.
He, however, stressed the need for every organisation to train staff members with the knowledge of First Aid as well as equip offices with First Aid kits and safety equipment.
Olaniyi explained that First Aid had been proven to be effective, safe and simple when used to save lives as well as reduce the severity of an injury in an emergency.
“As citizens, we run into all kinds of emergency situations and one needs to be ready and equipped with the basic knowledge of First Aid.
“Training affords a trained person the opportunity to provide care for injured persons or accident victims thereby saving lives, protecting them from further injury and stabilising for safe transport to the hospital.
“Trained persons also acquire skills and techniques to be confident to approach emergency situations such as accident scenes, fire outbreaks, collapsed buildings and bomb blast scenes, among others.
“We advocate that individuals such as employees, businessmen or women, students could register for courses at the Red Cross offices or any humanitarian organisation at their leisure times to acquire the skills,’’ he said.
Olaniyi listed courses in First Aid training to include recovery position for conscious and unconscious victims, Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), management of bleeding, burns, choking and fracture of the bone, among others. (NAN)

Paiko (Niger), Oct. 4, 2017 (NAN) The Nigeria Red Cross Society in Paiko Local Government Area of Niger is collaborating with the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) to sensitise people of the area on ‘Community First Aid’.
Alhaji Hamisu Jankaro, the State Chairman of the society, announced the collaboration while inaugurating the programme on Wednesday in Paiko.
Jankaro said both organisations would embark on sensitisation programme to educate people of the community on the importance of first aid.
“This Community First Aid is timely, considering our peoples’ lifestyle,’’ he said.
He urged volunteers to always discharge their duties in line with the tenets of the society.
Similarly, Alhaji Mohammed Ibrahim, the National Youth Adviser of the society, appealed to Red Cross volunteers in the area to be good ambassadors of the organisation.
Ibrahim said the Red Cross was a voluntary organisation aimed at providing humanitarian support when the need arises.
Also, Malam Ibrahim Abdullahi, a youth leader in the area, commended the gesture, saying that first aid is important in the lives of the people of the area who are mainly farmers.
“We now know the importance of having a first aid box in each household,’’ he said.
Mr Umukoro Joseph, President of the NYSC Community Development Service, said the measure was part of efforts by the NYSC Red Cross to assist members of its host community to stay healthy.
Joseph reiterated the need for people to take their health seriously, adding this is what informed the programme initiative.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the sensitisation involved a road show on all the major streets in Paiko and distribution of flyers with educative inscriptions. (NAN)
