JUTH conducts free surgeries for 80 persons in Plateau

Jos, March 14, 2017 (NAN)The Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH), has carried out free surgeries for 80 indigent persons in the southern part of Plateau, according to its Chief Medical Director (CMD), Dr. Edmund Banwat.
Banwat told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), on Tuesday in Jos that the surgeries were conducted at the JUTH Comprehensive Health Centre in Zamko, Langtang South Local Government.
He said that the surgical procedures were for Hernia, eye problems such as cataract, and fibroid.
According to him, both children and adults benefited from the Hernia repairs surgery.
The CMD said that the hospital also screened people for breast, cervical and prostate cancers, as well as diabetes and hepatitis B.
Banwat said that the exercise was part of the Presidential Rapid Initiative Programme of the Federal government, specifically aimed at assisting the poor.
NAN reports that the Minister of Health, Dr. Isaac Adewale, had directed tertiary health institutions to carry out surgeries and screenings targeted at “the poorest of the poor”.
“To get the poorest of the poor, we established a guideline, which we used to assess people in the zones so as to arrive at those in that category,” he explained.
Banwat disclosed that JUTH would conduct a similar exercise in the central and northern parts of the state.
“Our target is to go round the three senatorial zones before the end of March,” he said. (NAN)

Ile-Ife (Osun), Feb. 26, 2017 (NAN) Sen. Babajide Omoworare (APC-Osun East) has provided free medical treatment to more than 500 indigent patients in his senatorial district.
Speaking at the beginning of the treatment for the beneficiaries who converged at Oranmiyan Grammar School, Ile-Ife on Sunday, Omoworare told them that he deemed fit to fund the medical outreach based on his conviction that “health is wealth”.
“I decided to organise this programne because it is a useless community that will not care for its people and the healthy people will work effectively and pay their taxes accordingly.
“I observed that many people were suffering for renal failure that leads to kidney challenges, for this ailment is a silent killer which has no symptoms,” he said.
The senator urged the people to make regular medical check up a habit so as to detect early many silent killer diseases such renal failure and diabetes.
He also stressed the importance of training and re-training of medical personnel in the health sector so as to reduce medical tourism among the elites.
Earlier, Mrs Pero Adeniyi, the Founder of “Alive Kidney Foundation”, expressed regret that many victims of kidney diseases have been abandoned to their fate because the financial burden was too heavy on their loved ones.
Adeniyi appealed to the Federal Government to come to the aids of the less privileged suffering renal failure in view of financial implications.
Contributing, one of the care givers at the foundation, Mrs Eniola Titiloye-Adeniyi, identified factors such as smoking of cigratte, India helm and alcoholism as the major causes of kidney failure.
Titiloye-Adeniyi advised the people to refrain fro self-medication and food supplements not prescribed by the doctors, saying they can cause kidney disease.
The News Agency of Nigeria(NAN) reports that the health programme, tagged “Ilera Loro”, was organised for free screening of those suffering from prostrate cancer, high blood pressure renal failure and eye diseases. (NAN)
