Bayern Munich and upstarts Saarbrucken reach German Cup semi-finals

Munich (Germany), March 3, 2020 (Reuters/NAN) Holders Bayern Munich laboured into the German Cup semi-finals with a 1-0 win at Schalke 04 on Tuesday.

Also, Saarbrucken became the first fourth division side to reach the last four of the German Cup with a penalty kicks shootout win over Fortuna Duesseldorf.

Bayern Munich, who are aiming for a milestone 20th Cup triumph, were made to work hard by Schalke 04.

The home team missed several chances either side of Joshua Kimmich’s 40th-minute winner.

Schalke 04 striker Guido Burgstaller hit the crossbar and then had a goal ruled out for a marginal offside before Kimmich volleyed home from the edge of the penalty area.

The home team’s forward Rabbi Matondo missed a sitter with a feeble close range shot in the 64th minute after a fast break.

Bayern Munich were forced to hang on in the closing stages as Schalke 04 piled on the pressure.

Saarbrucken knocked out top-tier opponents Fortuna Duesseldorf in the day’s opening fixture as they won the penalty kicks shootout 7-6, with the absorbing contest ending 1-1 after normal and extra time.

Goalkeeper Daniel Batz was Saarbrucken’s hero as he saved five penalty kicks, one in normal time and four in the shootout, to send his side through.

The feat sparked wild celebrations among the jubilant home fans.

Midfielder Tobias Janicke fired Saarbrucken ahead in the 31st minute with a neat finish.

However, Mathias Jorgensen levelled with a late header to force extra time after Batz had kept out a Rouwen Hennings penalty kick.

Fortuna Duesseldorf missed two chances to win the shootout as Batz denied Kevin Stoger and Matthias Zimmermann and then saved Jorgensen’s spot-kick after Janicke had drilled in Saarbrucken’s final penalty kick.

In the other two quarter-finals, Bayer Leverkusen entertain Union Berlin and Eintracht Frankfurt are at home to Werder Bremen on Wednesday.(Reuters/NAN)

Last-gasp winner sends Leipzig into German Cup semi-finals

Augsburg (Germany), April 3, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) RB Leipzig recovered from conceding a stoppage-time equaliser to score a winner in the last minute of extra time.

The effort helped them to beat Augsburg 2-1 on Tuesday to book their place in the German Cup semi-finals.

Marcel Halstenberg scored with a penalty kick in the 120th minute, after the game went to extra time thanks to Alfred Finnbogason’s equaliser with the game’s last kick after 90 minutes.

Timo Werner had given the visitors the lead in the 74th minute with a well-placed shot from 18 metres after a quick break.

Earlier, second division club Hamburg SV reached the last four with a 2-0 win over Paderborn courtesy of Pierre-Michel Lasogga’s double strike.

Bayern Munich take on second tier Heidenheim on Wednesday while Schalke 04 host Werder Bremen in the other quarter-finals.(Reuters/NAN)

Germany’s Neuer ruled out of German Cup final, says Heynckes

Berlin, May 9, 2018 (Reuters/NAN) Bayern Munich’s Manuel Neuer will not play in the German Cup final, Coach Jupp Heynckes said on Wednesday.

The Germany goalkeeper races to recover from a long-term foot injury for next month’s World Cup in Russia.

Neuer, a World Cup winner in 2014, broke a bone in his foot back in September and has not played since, putting his fitness for the tournament in doubt.

Neuer will be missing when champions Bayern take on VfB Stuttgart in the Bundesliga finale on Saturday, and also against Eintracht Frankfurt in the German Cup final later this month.

Neuer, who has been replaced in the Bayern team by reserve keeper Sven Ulreich, only recently returned to training but had to take another break for a few days.

“Manuel will neither play against (VfB) Stuttgart nor in the Cup final,’’ Heynckes told sports magazine Kicker.

If picked for the preliminary Germany squad on May 15, Neuer will only have two friendly internationals against Austria and Saudi Arabia to prepare for the finals starting on June 14.
