Kane and Rashford on track but Southgate not ruling out Vardy return

Amsterdam, March 4, 2020 (Reuters/NAN) England manager Gareth Southgate believes his two injured strikers, Harry Kane and Marcus Rashford, are “on track” in their recoveries.

He however said he would not close the door on a Euro 2020 recall for Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy.

Tottenham forward Kane had an operation in January on a ruptured hamstring tendon, whilst Manchester United striker Rashford has been sidelined with a back injury.

“We’ve had really good updates right the way through and Harry and Marcus are exactly where we were expecting them to be,” Southgate told reporters after the draw for the Nations League on Tuesday.

“Both players will give themselves the best possible chance of being available. That’s their mentality and that’s their dedication to their sport.

“That’s the only bit we can guarantee. What we can’t guarantee is how that rehab will develop as it’s stepped up and as it becomes more intense, but they are both on track from the information we were given at the very start,” he added.

Both Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho and Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer have recently expressed confidence that the players would be back in action before the end of the season.

Southgate said the players’ focus was inevitably going to be on getting back into English Premier League (EPL) action before their thoughts turned to the Euros.

At the Euros England will play Croatia, the Czech Republic and a qualifier from the playoffs in the group stage.

“In terms of their ability to play the matches before the end of the season, that first thought has got to be how do they help their clubs.

“They have both got key matches coming up for their clubs and they will both want to help their clubs to have strong finishes to the season, and then we will pick them up from there,” said the England manager.

The injuries to the first-choice England strike pair have raised the issue of whether Vardy might return for the Euros in June and July.

The Leicester City striker retired from England duty after the 2018 World Cup and is joint top scorer in the Premier League,

“We’ve got 70 of them playing. So, why would we rule anybody out?

“I think that’s always the stance we’ve taken and I don’t see any reason to change that, unless we get another 50 English footballers playing in the next months,” said Southgate, adding that he had yet to speak to the 33-year-old.

“I’ve not spoken to players per se across the period, but I’ve always said that that door has never been closed. That’s been the consistent message,” he said.(Reuters/NAN)

Kane nets hat-trick as England romp past Bulgaria

London, Sept 7, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) England’s serene progress towards Euro 2020 continued as skipper Harry Kane grabbed a hat-trick in a 4-0 demolition of Bulgaria in Group A at Wembley on Saturday.

Kane opened the scoring after 24 minutes and struck home two penalties after the break as well as providing the assist for Raheem Sterling to get on the scoresheet.

Gareth Southgate’s side have now scored 14 goals in their opening three Group A games and lead the table with nine points while Kosovo who earlier beat the Czech Republic 2-1, have eight points.

England host Kosovo for the first time on Tuesday when another victory will leave them looking virtually assured of reaching next year’s tournament that culminates on home soil.

It was not a perfect display by England with Bulgaria having three good chances, one when the score was 0-0.
However, England proved far too strong as they left the visitors languishing at the bottom of the group with two points from five games.

Kane’s second hat-trick for England, following the one he scored against Panama at last year’s World Cup finals, took his tally to 25 goals in 40 appearances.

Kane hits 93rd minute wonder-goal as Spurs sink Juventus in Singapore

Singapore, July 21, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane scored what he called “one of the best goals” of his career to beat Italian champions Juventus 3-2 in an enthralling International Champions Cup contest in Singapore on Sunday.

Kane capitalised after team mate Lucas Moura nicked the ball deep into injury time.

The striker thumps his effort from the halfway line high into the steamy night and over the head of Juventus’ back-pedalling goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny.

His goal completed a comeback after Cristiano Ronaldo put Juventus 2-1 in front.

“”It is probably one of the best goals of my career.

“”I could see in parts of the game the keeper was off the line.

“I thought if I get a chance to shoot, I’ll shoot and thankfully it went in,” Kane said.

Spurs midfielder Erik Lamela scored the only goal of the first half, striking from close range in the 31st minute after Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon palmed a shot from teenage striker Troy Parrott.

In a livelier second half, Juventus substitute Gonzalo Higuain equalised in the 56th minute after some neat interplay on the edge of the box gave him the space to place it low into the right corner.

Then up stepped crowd-favourite Ronaldo.

Defender Mattia De Sciglio cut the ball back to the Portuguese who drilled it across the keeper in his last touch before he was replaced.

However, Juventus’ lead did not last long.

In the 65th minute, Moura got on the end of a pinpoint pass from Tanguy Ndombele, the French midfielder who joined Spurs for a club record fee earlier this month.

In the closing stages, Higuain had a decent chance to break the deadlock.

Nevertheless, it was Kane’s wonder-goal – which came after Juventus midfielder Adrien Rabiot lost the ball – which sealed the win in the dying seconds.

““It was a great goal. Unbelievable from Harry. It is good for him to set off pre-season with scoring,” Spurs coach Mauricio Pochettino said.

Kane penalty kick gives Tottenham edge over Chelsea in League Cup

London, Jan. 9, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) Tottenham Hotspur gained a slender advantage over London rivals Chelsea on Tuesday in their League Cup semi-final meeting as Harry Kane’s penalty kick earned them a 1-0 win at Wembley.

Kane’s 26th minute penalty kick, his 160th goal for the club, means Mauricio Pochettino’s side will be slight favourites to reach the final after the first leg match.

But there is plenty of work still to do.

The only goal of the evening arrived in unusual circumstances with referee Michael Oliver eventually awarding a penalty kick with the help of VAR.

This was after Spurs skipper Kane was adjudged to have been marginally onside before being taken out by Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga.

Kane tucked away the penalty kick with his usual aplomb to move fourth, above Cliff Jones, on Tottenham’s all-time list of goalscorers.

Chelsea, who were far better than in their 3-1 English Premier League defeat to Tottenham in November, could count themselves unlucky though.

They twice hit the woodwork before the break and completely dominated the second half.

Tottenham had to defend desperately at times and goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga was forced into making several sharp saves.

The second leg will take place at Stamford Bridge on Jan. 24.

Tottenham are looking to win their first silverware under manager Mauricio Pochettino and their first trophy since beating Chelsea in the 2008 League Cup final.

Kane, Son rip Everton apart as Tottenham win 6-2

Liverpool (UK), Dec. 23, 2018 (Reuters/NAN) Tottenham Hotspur showed why manager Mauricio Pochettino is “a wanted man’’ by thrashing hosts Everton 6-2 on Sunday to close to within six points of English Premier League leaders Liverpool.

Spurs have had to cope with the unwanted attention of Pochettino being linked with the Manchester United job following Jose Mourinho’s sacking some days ago.

But they showed no signs of being distracted as they roared back from a goal down at Goodison Park.

Braces from Son Heung-min and Harry Kane, with Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen also on target, did the magic, after Everton had led against the run of play through Theo Walcott.

Even a strike from former Tottenham midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson to reduce the hosts’ deficit to 4-2 early in the second half could not spark a revival.

However, fatigue may still derail Tottenham’s bid to win a first trophy under Pochettino, with Spurs still involved in four competitions.

But with Liverpool facing Arsenal and Manchester City in top-of-the-table clashes in their next three games over the festive period, Tottenham have the opportunity to haul themselves back into it.

They can turn it into a three-way title race if they maintain the standards set at Goodison.

Kane had chipped into the side-netting and Jordan Pickford produced a fine save to deny England teammate Kieran Trippier in the early stages.

But it was Everton who struck first in a wildly-open contest when Walcott stabbed home at the near-post from Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s cross.

Marco Silva’s men could even have been 2-0 up had Calvert-Lewin not been penalised for a push on Davinson Sanchez when heading home moments later.

But Spurs looked as if they could score with almost every attack and were soon on level terms after a Pickford error, when he rushed out from his goal.

The England number one only succeeded in getting in the way of his own defender Kurt Zouma and Son took advantage with a wonderful finish from a narrow angle.

Once back on level terms, Spurs were relentless as Pickford denied Son a second but Alli charged into the box to sweep home the rebound to turn the game around.

Kane is now just one goal behind Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang in the race for the English Premier League golden boot and showed his predatory instincts to side-foot into an empty net.

This was after Trippier’s fine free-kick came back off the post three minutes before half-time.

However, there was no let-up in the game’s pace after the break as Eriksen produced a technical and perfectly-controlled volley from the penalty box edge to make it 4-1.

Three minutes later Everton’s deficit was back to two as Sigurdsson dribbled across the whole Tottenham defence before firing back across Hugo Lloris.

Yet, any hope of a fightback was extinguished just after the hour mark when Son’s fine control cushioned Erik Lamela’s pass before he finished through the legs of Pickford.

It was announced some days agao that the South Korean would go to the Asian Cup in January.

This was in spite of his already representing his country at the FIFA World Cup and Asian Games earlier this year.

And Son showed why he would be missed by his club in January once more.

An inch-perfect cross was his contribution for Kane to slide in for his second of the afternoon 16 minutes from time.

Liverpool’s Klopp plays down Kane fatigue concerns ahead of Spurs clash

London, Sept. 14, 2018 (Reuters/NAN) Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp has dismissed claims that it is the perfect time to face Tottenham Hotspur because of injuries to key players and concern over striker Harry Kane’s form and freshness.

Kane, who won the Golden Boot at this year’s World Cup with six goals, has started 61 matches in all competitions for club and country since the start of last season.

The England captain has been far from his best at the start of the new campaign.

And Klopp reckons the national team’s run to the World Cup semi-finals meant plenty of players were not afforded adequate recovery time.

“We all knew after the World Cup, especially when England went so far in the tournament they had no rest,” Klopp told Sky Sports ahead of Liverpool’s Premier League trip to Spurs on Saturday.

“We all need rest. He (Kane) cannot get the rest match-wise but he will find his form, maybe at the weekend, he has already delivered, it’s not that he’s not in good shape.”

Tottenham will be without attacking midfielder Dele Alli and captain Hugo Lloris through injury.

A surprise defeat by Watford before the international break means Tottenham’s preparation for a game against Liverpool side boasting a 100 per cent record so far has not been ideal.

But Klopp believes his team will be tested by Spurs, whose squad depth allows them to replace any player in the starting lineup.

“You go through the lineup of Tottenham and realise they can replace even Dele Alli, Lloris,” he added.

“They will be a really strong side and no I don’t think it’s the perfect time to play Tottenham.”

Brazilian midfielder Fabinho is yet to make his league debut for Liverpool after making a close-season move from AS Monaco.

Klopp said the 24-year-old will need more time to get up to speed but has no concerns over the player’s long-term ability to be a success at Anfield.

“I don’t like the situation, because I don’t like to say to Fabinho, who is full of energy and desire to play, to tell him he is not involved,” Klopp told a news conference.

“He came from another league playing in a completely different system to us and that takes time. The plan was – and still is – that he will make us better.” (Reuters/NAN)

London, May 22, 2018 (Reuter/NAN) Striker Harry Kane will captain England at next month’s World Cup finals in Russia, the Football Association said on Tuesday.
The announcement was made in a video published on Twitter.
England manager Gareth Southgate told the England squad that: “Harry has some outstanding personal qualities,” during a meeting at St George’s Park on Monday night.
Spurs team-mate Eric Dier and Liverpool midfielder Jordan Henderson have also skippered England recently.
The Tottenham Hotspur striker Kane has scored 12 goals for England from 23 appearances and first captained his country in a World Cup qualifier against Scotland last year.

EPL: Spurs’ Kane hopeful of catching Liverpool’s Salah in Golden Boot race

London, April 9, 2018 (Reuters/NAN) Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane remains hopeful of overhauling Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah in the race for the 2017/2018 English Premier League’s Golden Boot award.

But the England forward is also focused on helping Spurs finish the season strongly.

Kane is bidding to end the campaign as the division’s top scorer for the third time in a row.

If he does, it will be a feat no other player has managed since Arsenal’s Thierry Henry won the last of his four scoring titles in 2006.

The 24-year-old England international has scored 24 times in the league and currently trails Salah by five goals with six games remaining.

Liverpool though have five fixtures left.

“I still believe I can,” Kane told British media. “Whatever happens, there are still games to go. I’ve got to focus on my game. I can’t control what he (Salah) does.

“Obviously, as a striker, it will be great to win the Golden Boot again and I will keep working hard from now until the end of the season.”

Kane claimed Tottenham’s winner in Saturday’s 2-1 victory at Stoke City, but the goal was awarded to Christian Eriksen.

Eriksen’s free kick was adjudged to have gone straight past goalkeeper Jack Butland without being touched by the England forward.

“I swear on my daughter’s life that I touched the ball, but there’s nothing I can do,” Kane added.

“If they (the Premier League) turn it around, they turn it around. If they take my word, they take my word. It is what it is — the most important thing is that we won the game.”

Silverware more important for Kane than scoring records

London, Dec. 28, 2017 (Reuters) Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane is happy to shatter scoring records, but believes that winning silverware with the London club would represent a more significant achievement than any personal landmark.

The England international scored a hat-trick in Tuesday’s 5-2 win over Southampton to eclipse Alan Shearer’s 22-year-old record of 36 English Premier League goals in a calendar year.

It took his tally to 39 for 2017.

Kane also became Europe’s most lethal marksman of the year as he took his total in all competitions in the calendar year for club and country to 56.

It was a feat which lifted him ahead of Lionel Messi, who hit 54 for FC Barcelona and Argentina in the past 12 months.

Asked if team honours meant more than personal glory, Kane said: “Yeah, for sure, 100 per cent. I’ve always said team trophies are what I want to achieve.”

Tottenham are fifth in the Premier League, 21 points behind runaway leaders Manchester City.

They face Italian side Juventus in the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League in February and host Wimbledon in the English FA Cup third round next month.

“We’ve got a good chance to win the FA Cup.

“In the Champions League, we’ve shown we can beat the best and we’ve got to see how far we can go in that.

“Obviously, in the Premier League, we’re in a fight for the top four and we’ve got to see how high we can get.

“There’s a lot to play for and for me it’s about winning trophies.”

Kane amongst world’s best, Tottenham boss Pochettino says

Abuja, Dec. 27, 2017 (NAN) Tottenham Hotspur’s manager Mauricio Pochettino has hailed Harry Kane’s achievements, adding that the striker was amongst the best players in the world.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Kane toppled Shearer’s 22-year-old record for the most English Premier league goals in a calendar year.

This was after he scored a hat-trick in Tottenham’s 5-2 win over Southampton on Tuesday.

Kane hit a second treble in as many games to complete Tottenham’s five-goal rout, rounding off the year with 39 Premier League goals.

The feat made it 56 strikes in all competitions for Spurs and England.

His second goal of the day had taken him to 55 for club and country in 2017.

This lifted him above FC Barcelona’s Lionel Messi to become Europe’s top-scorer over the last 12 months in the five major countries (England, Spain, Italy, Germany and France).

The 24-year-old England forward also set an EPL record by scoring six hat-tricks in a calendar year.

He capped another ruthless display in front of goal to complete his treble in the 67th minute, his second in as many games.

Pochettino in his post-match comments noted that it was a fantastic achievement, adding however that kudos must also be given to the team.

“I think I have said everything. His name is there [with the best in the world], it is a fantastic achievement.

“Congratulations to him and to the team because you also need help from the team.

“It does not surprise us because everyday we see how he works, how determined he is and how professional he is. That can only be good for him.

“Professional is a massive word — you need to include everything there inside and he is a good example of that.”

On his hopes for Tottenham in 2018, Pochettino said: “We are ambitious, but I am happy we finished the year in a very good way. For next year? Win — win every game. The mentality is so important for us.”(NAN)
