Kano, Sept. 12, 2019 (NAN) The Kano State Hisbah Board on Thursday said it arrested 27 beggars in Kano metropolis for allegedly violating the law banning street begging in the state.
The Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the board, Malam Lawan Ibrahim, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Kano.
Ibrahim said that the arrests were carried out from 12 a.m to 2 a.m on Thursday at Kano Guest Inn, Sabon Gari, Triumph and Railway areas.
He said those who were arrested comprised 18 male and nine female children between the age of 13 and 19, adding that they were arrested during different raids in the city.
According to him, the board will continue to arrest beggars who refuse to abide by the law which bans street begging and will make sure Kano becomes totally free from begging in the nearest future.
“They were screened and we found out that they were all first time offenders, we invited their parents and relatives to hand them over and warned them to desist from such act,” he said. (NAN)

Kano, Jan. 3, 2018 (NAN) The Kano State Hisbah Board says it received 98,217 cases last year.
Malam Umar Yahaya , the Public Relations Officer of the board, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Kano on Wednesday that the cases covered prostitution, matrimonial disputes and quarrels between neighbours.
“The disputes relate to debts, disagreements among neighbours, prostitution, breastfeeding as well as consumption of alcohol, among others,” he said.
Yahaya said that the board was committed to its mandate of ridding the society of social ills, adding that efforts will be intensified to restore moral sanity in the state.
According to him the cases had increased compared to the 96,323 cases recorded in 2016.
He urged members of the public to support the efforts of the board at ensuring a better society. (NAN)

Kano, June 1, 2017 (NAN) The Kano State Hisbah Board has arrested 96 beggars in May for allegedly violating the law banning street begging in the state capital.

Malam Dahiru Muhammed, , an official of the board’s Anti-begging Unit, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Kano on Thursday that 27 out of the 96 beggars were children, while 69 were adult.

“Our men arrested 96 street beggars around Lodge Road, Magwan Junction, Kwari, Katsina Road and Wapa for violating the law banning street begging in Kano metropolis.

“Out of the 96 beggars, 69 were adult male and female, while 27 were children between the ages of 10, 13 and 14,” Muhammed said.

He explained that 71 of those arrested were from Kano city, while 22 were from Jigawa, Kaduna, Katsina and Niger states, with three from Chad Republic.

Muhammed said that those who were first offenders were released, while others from the neighbouring states were repatriated to their various local government areas of origin.

He also revealed plans by the board to train the beggars on skills acquisition to keep them off the streets permanently. (NAN)
