Salah, Mane earn braces to send Liverpool top of EPL again

Liverpool (UK), April 26, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah both struck twice as Liverpool kept the pressure up on English Premier League (EPL) title rivals Manchester City with a 5-0 win on Friday.

Liverpool beat already relegated Huddersfield Town to move to the EPL summit on 91 points, two more than Manchester City.

But Pep Guardiola’s side can regain top spot with a win at Burnley on Sunday.

It took just 14 seconds for Liverpool to go in front, with Huddersfield defender Jon Gorenc Stankovic giving the ball away to Salah just outside the box.

The Egyptian fed Naby Keita who slotted home off the inside of the post.

Mane headed in the second in the 23rd minute.

The Senegalese met a trademark Andy Robertson cross from the left after Virgil Van Dijk had started the move with a surge out from the back.

On the stroke of half-time, Salah put the game beyond Huddersfield.

He latched on to a long pass forward from Trent Alexander-Arnold and knocked the ball past the advancing Jonas Lossl.

Mane scored his second and Liverpool’s fourth in the 66th minute, heading in a deep cross from Jordan Henderson.

He also went close to a hat-trick in the 78th minute when he headed a Xherdan Shaqiri cross against the post.

Salah made it 5-0 with a simple close-range tap-in from a low Robertson cross.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain returned to action as a substitute, his first appearance since suffering a knee injury a year ago.(Reuters/NAN)

West Ham United leave it late to see off spirited Huddersfield Town

London, March 16, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) Substitute Javier Hernandez scored a late brace including a stoppage-time winner to help West Ham United beat Huddersfield Town 4-3 in a roller-coaster Premier League clash on Saturday.

The Mexico international, whose diving header had made it 3-3 with six minutes left, nodded the ball in again from Felipe Anderson’s cross to send the London Stadium crowd into raptures.

“Javier played well in past games but he was maybe under pressure to score. Now he’s come off the bench and scored two,” West Ham manager Manuel Pellegrini told the BBC.

“I hate it when my team play bad. Winning or losing I want to play well. But winning is the important thing.

“Winning 4-3 and scoring three in the last 10 minutes is good for the team and the fans,” he said.

Defender Angelo Ogbonna had given the home side hope with a header from Aaron Cresswell’s corner after Huddersfield scored three goals in a league match for the first time this season.

The visitors got their goals through Karlan Grant’s double and a Juninho Bacuna strike.

Earlier, West Ham took the lead in the 15th minute through skipper Mark Noble who drilled his penalty past goalkeeper Jonas Lossl after midfielder Manuel Lanzini was brought down by teenager Aaron Rowe.

The visitors responded almost immediately with their first shot on target as an unmarked Bacuna rose well to meet fellow midfielder Aaron Mooy’s whipped corner with a powerful header.

Huddersfield went 2-1 up late in the first half with a well-worked free kick routine that led to Grant tucking in Chris Lowe’s low cross from the left.

Grant’s second was a powerful effort from distance in the second half.

A frustrated Grant explained how Huddersfield squandered the lead to lose their third match in a row.

“It’s a tough one to take, 3-1 up away from home… we have to do better from there. Don’t concede three when you’re 3-1 up, it’s that simple.

“Everyone’s gutted. I scored two, but we didn’t walk away with three points, that’s what hurts most.

“We have to play for pride at the moment. We’re in a tough place. We need to stick together and go again,” he said.

Iwobi, Lacazette help Arsenal to EPL win at Huddersfield

Huddersfield (UK), Feb. 9, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) Arsenal returned to winning ways with a 2-1 victory over bottom side Huddersfield Town on Saturday in the English Premier League (EPL).

The north London side are however the only side without an away clean sheet in the EPL this season.

Arsenal had suffered four defeats in their last nine league games, including a 1-3 loss at Manchester City last week.

But Nigeria’s Alex Iwobi put them ahead in the 16th minute with a deflected shot.

Huddersfield pressed and harried but rarely troubled the Arsenal goal in the first half.

The difference in quality showed as the visitors doubled their advantage through Alexandre Lacazette’s 10th league goal of the season a minute before halftime.

Adama Diakhaby had two good chances to get Huddersfield — who had drawn once and lost 11 of their previous 12 league games — back into the match.

But he failed to really test Bernd Leno in the Arsenal goal.

Sead Kolasinac put through his own net in stoppage time to give Huddersfield late hope.

It was Huddersfield’s first goal in over nine hours of football in all competitions, but the visitors held on for the win.

Victory moved Arsenal level on points with fifth-placed Chelsea, who play Manchester City on Sunday, while Huddersfield stayed bottom, 13 points from safety.(Reuters/NAN)

EPL: Higuain scores twice as Chelsea hammer Huddersfield 5-0

London, Feb. 2, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) New Chelsea striker Gonzalo Higuain scored his first two English Premier League goals on Saturday, sharing the spoils with Eden Hazard in a 5-0 victory over bottom side Huddersfield Town.

The victory eased the pressure on coach Maurizio Sarri after a mid-week disasterous showing against Bournemouth.

Higuain, who arrived in London last month, received a neat side-footed pass from N’Golo Kante in the 16th minute and squeezed a shot between goalkeeper Jonas Loessl and the near post.

Just before halftime Hazard converted a penalty kick for his 11th league goal of the season.

Elias Kachunga had brought down Chelsea fullback Cesar Azpilicueta on the edge of the area and referee Paul Tierney had pointed at the penalty kick spot.

The Belgian then got his 12th in the 67th minute by rounding Loessl and coolly slotting home from a Ross Barkley pass.

Two minutes later Higuain added his second, a looping shot which took a deflection before hitting the back of the net.

David Luiz made it five in the 86th minute, his header helped into the goal by the hapless Kachunga’s outstretched foot.

Chelsea had lost their previous two league games, including a 4-0 drubbing by mid-table Bournemouth on Wednesday.

The defeats sparked talks that coach Maurizio Sarri might become the latest in a string of their managers to be fired after just a few months.

But the win took Chelsea back to fourth place above Arsenal, who play at Manchester City on Sunday.

EPL: Early goal by Richarlison gives Everton 1-0 win at Huddersfield

Huddersfield (UK), Jan. 29, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) An early goal by Brazilian forward Richarlison gave Everton a 1-0 win at bottom-of-table side Huddersfield Town after a dour English Premier League clash on Tuesday.

Everton had substitute Lucas Digne sent off during the game, but moved up to eighth on 33 points from 24 games.

Huddersfield however remained rooted to the foot of the table with 11 points, after losing for the 10th time in their last 11 league games.

It was also a sour debut for Huddersfield’s new manager Jan Siewert, who took over from German compatriot David Wagner last week.

He had caught the English Premier League side’s eye as Borussia Dortmund’s reserve team coach.

With chances few and far between, the contest was settled in the third minute when Richarlison scrambled the ball home past Jonas Lossl from close range.

The home team’s goalkeeper had blocked the Brazilian’s first attempt.

Following Digne’s 66th-minute dismissal for a professional foul on Adama Diakhaby, Aaron Mooy went close to equalising.

However, Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford produced a superb save to keep out the Australian forward’s free kick.

Pickford came to Everton’s rescue again in the 79th minute when he clawed out an Elias Kachunga header as the visitors were forced to hang on in the closing stages.(Reuters/NAN)

Manchester City ease past Huddersfield to close EPL gap on Liverpool

Huddersfield (England), Jan. 20, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) Manchester City barely broke a sweat as they easily beat bottom club Huddersfield Town to close the gap on Premier League leaders Liverpool to four points on Sunday.

Danilo’s deflected shot gave City the lead in an opening half in which they were not at their sharpest.

That goal took City’s goal tally to 100 in all competitions this season — making them the only club in Europe’s top five leagues to reach that total.

Pep Guardiola’s side upped the tempo early in the second half and Raheem Sterling headed in their second goal in the 54th minute before Leroy Sane made it 3-0 two minutes later.

It was a poor advert for the Premier League with Huddersfield offering next to nothing as an attacking force.

City’s fourth consecutive win since back-to-back losses over Christmas took them to 56 points from 23 games with Liverpool on 60 after they beat Crystal Palace on Saturday 4-3.

Toothless Huddersfield, who had caretaker boss Mark Hudson in charge for the first time, have only 11 points and are 10 points behind Newcastle United who are 17th.

City had scored 19 goals in their previous three games without reply — including two Cup romps against lower league opponents — but they were subdued in Sunday’s first half.

“The way we played we didn’t deserve more than three goals,” Guardiola said. “We will improve in the future.

“We have to demand more from ourselves in every game and do our best, but sometimes it’s difficult. They defended deep and man-to-man.”

Huddersfield set out their stall from the start, retreating back behind the ball to try to frustrate City.

It worked but City did get ahead in the 18th minute when Danilo let fly from range and the ball flew off the head of defender Christopher Schindler past keeper Jonas Lossl.

Despite their clear superiority, City did not add to their total before halftime and it was not until after the break that they rediscovered the slick passing for which they are known.

An intricate spell of passing ended with the ball being played to Sane inside the area and his cross was met with a diving header from Sterling.

Two minutes later Danilo intercepted a wayward pass and his first-time ball forward was cushioned by the head of Sergio Aguero to Sane who neatly side-footed inside the post.

“This game can teach us and show what we have to do to improve,” Guardiola said.

“We’ve scored a lot of goals. So far, so good. One team has been better but we’re in January and there’s many more games to play.

“You don’t win or lose the Premier League in January. We have to focus on what we have to do.

“If Liverpool win, we have to win. And if Liverpool lose then we also have to win.” (Reuters/NAN)

Wagner leaves relegation-haunted Huddersfield by mutual consent

Huddersfield (UK), Jan. 14, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) English Premier League (EPL) clubside Huddersfield Town parted company with manager David Wagner by mutual consent on Monday.

The German leaves the club at the bottom of the 2018/2019 EPL table after winning just two games all season.

Huddersfield Town chairman Dean Hoyle said in a statement that Wagner, who joined the club in November 2015, needed a break from the “rigours of football management”.

Wagner guided them into the top-flight in 2016/2017 for the first time in 45 years after winning the Championship play-off final against Reading.

Huddersfield Town were one of the favourites for relegation in their first EPL campaign, but Wagner guided the team to safety with a 16th-placed finish.

The 2018/2019 campaign has proven more difficult, with the Terriers only managing wins over Fulham and Wolverhampton Wanderers in 22 league matches.

“The 47-year-old leaves Huddersfield Town after detailed discussions with the Board of Directors, with both parties agreeing this is the correct move for the future of the club,” Huddersfield said.

Huddersfield Town chairman Hoyle hailed Wagner as one of the club’s “greats” and added they had no intention of sacking him this season.

“Under his stewardship, we’ve achieved things on the football pitch that surpass anything in modern memory, and that have gone well beyond my wildest expectations as Chairman and as a fan,” Hoyle said.

“As I had said previously, I had no intention of sacking David this season. Subsequently David — being the great man he is — came to us and made it clear that he needs a break from the rigours of football management.

“I know the term `mutual consent’ is often a byword for the manager being sacked in professional football, but this is a truly joint decision.”

Manchester (UK), Aug. 19, 2018 (Reuters/NAN) Sergio Aguero netted his 13th hat-trick for Manchester City as the champions made light of the absence of the injured Kevin De Bruyne to thrash Huddersfield Town 6-1.

They move joint top of the Premier League.

The prolific Argentine scored on 25, 35 and 75 minutes, also hitting the post in a devastating display.

Huddersfield were the only side to stop City scoring in the league at home last season, but this time they had no answer.

Gabriel Jesus also netted, along with David Silva on his 250th league appearance for City, with the rout completed by a Terence Kongolo own goal late on.

“I am happy,” said man-of-the-match Aguero, who was about to be replaced when he scored his third.

“I was a little bit tired. I try two or three times to get the third goal,” said he.

For once, Pep Guardiola chose to pair Aguero with Jesus up front and such were the array of City attacking options that Huddersfield were simply pulled apart.

After the visitors rode their luck for 25 minutes, City keeper Ederson found Aguero with a perfect through ball and the Argentine kept his cool to finish cleverly.

Jesus was next on the scoresheet after exchanging passes with Benjamin Mendy and firing past Ben Hamer.

The defender then fumbled a cross to gift Aguero his second and City’s third in a blistering 10-minute spell before halftime.

Although Jon Stankovic pulled a goal back before the interval, there was no respite as Silva produced a perfect free kick to cap an impressive display in front of his watching wife and child.

Huddersfield (UK), Aug. 11, 2018 (Reuters/NAN) Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri made a winning start to life in the Premier League as his team enjoyed a 3-0 win over Huddersfield Town at the John Smith’s Stadium on Saturday.

After enduring plenty of Huddersfield pressure, Chelsea went ahead in the 34th minute when Willian’s cross from the left found N’Golo Kante whose mis-hit shot squirted past keeper Ben Hamer.

Chelsea doubled their advantage just before the interval when Marcos Alonso burst into the area and went down under challenge from Christopher Schindler and debutant Jorginho coolly converted the penalty.

A brilliantly constructed counter-attack produced Chelsea’s third as substitute Eden Hazard broke from midfield and slipped a perfectly-timed pass to Pedro who beat Hamer with an expert finish. (Reuters/NAN)

Abuja, Jan. 31, 2018 (Reuters/NAN) Liverpool bounced back from two straight losses with a comfortable 3-0 win at Huddersfield Town, opening up a five-point gap over their top four rivals in the English Premier League.

German midfielder Emre Can fired the visitors ahead in the 26th minute with a fine first-time effort from 25 metres which took a slight deflection to beat goalkeeper Jonas Lossl.

Huddersfield went close through Chris Loewe’s free-kick, but Liverpool doubled their lead on the stroke of halftime when Roberto Firmino fired shot past Lossl from a tight angle.

Mohamed Salah made it 3-0 with a 78th minute penalty kick after Philip Billing pulled down Can.

The result left Huddersfield in 14th place on 24 points, just one point above the relegation zone.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, after the match, noted that his team played very well.

He added that the win was exactly the reaction he was hoping for from his team, after losing two consecutive games.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Reds had stuttered in their past two matches.

There was a Premier League defeat by lowly Swansea and an English FA Cup exit at the hands of West Brom.

“It was exactly what we needed. It was not a brilliant performance, but it was very mature and exactly what we needed at the right moment.

“We could have done better, but we scored the first goal. We maybe gave one situation away, but it was difficult for Huddersfield to counter-attack. It was very mature and exactly what we needed.

“You need to win all the time, we know that. Coming back on track is the most important thing and now we have a few days to prepare for another difficult game against Tottenham.

“There is an open bill and we need to pay that back.

“Tonight we were better and the midfield did well with the counter press and that helped the back line. It was nearly perfect. Not the performance, but the result,” he said.(Reuters/NAN)
