Bandits killed 10 in Katsina communities – Police

Katsina, May 1, 2019 (NAN) The police in Katsina State have confirmed the killing of 10 persons by bandits at Gobirawa and Sabawa villages in Safana Local Government Area of the state.

This is contained in a statement issued by the command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Gambo Isah, on Wednesday in Katsina.

He said that the bandits came on about 150 motorcycles at about 6.10 p.m on Tuesday, and attacked the two communities.

Isah also said that the bandits rustled a number of animals and took away other valuables after killing the Innocent persons.

He revealed that the command immediately dispatched police patrol teams to the affected communities, engaged the hoodlums in gun duel and chased them away.

According to him, the police are making efforts to arrest the hoodlums.

“We will do everything possible to bring the perpetrators of this heinous crime to justice and bringing to an end the activities of these rascals”, he said. (NAN)

Ado Ekiti, Aug. 24, 2018 (NAN) The suspect who allegedly stabbed the traditional ruler of Odo Oro Ekiti, Oba Gbadebo Ogunsakin to death, on Friday confessed to the crime, saying he carried out the act to reclaim the throne.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the 40-year-old Omonoyi Ademola, who was said to be mentally unstable before the crime, said he never knew the Oba would die.
Omoniyi, who looked unkempt and unremorseful, shocked journalists with his eloquence and spoken English when he was paraded by the state Commissioner of Police, Mr Bello Muhammed, along with 26 other suspects.
He claimed that the late Oba first attacked him when he visited the palace to pass important information to him.

He said that he was told by the spirits and his family that it was the turn of his clan to reign over the community, and based on this information he headed for the palace on the fateful day.
“I never went to the palace with the intention of killing the monarch,’’ according to him.
Omoniyi explained that it was when the Oba heard of the message he brought, that he attacked him, claiming he did not know the monarch would die as a result of his retaliation.
Earlier, the commissioner of police had told journalists that he did not believe Omoniyi was an insane person going by his conduct and actions so far.
According to him, it is illogical to think that a man said to be a mad person would kill a whole Oba with a knife and choose to escape into the bush and later travelled down to Ado Ekiti where he was later arrested.
Muhammed also hinted on the arrest of a number of persons suspected to have links with the recent murder of late Bunmi Ojo, former Personal Assistant to former governor Segun Oni and one-time Commissioner in the Federal Character Commission.
He explained that the alleged killers were not paraded on Friday in order not to jeopardise the efforts to arrest those still at large.
The police boss said that 27 suspects had so far been picked in connection with various crimes in the state, such as murder, cultism and armed robbery.
He listed the suspects to include 16 cultists, seven murder suspects and four armed robbery suspects.
However, he appealed to residents to continue to partner with the command in its bid to rid the state of crimes. (NAN)

Keffi (Nasarawa State), July 6, 2018 (NAN) The Nasarawa State Police Command has confirmed the killing of Mr Ismaila Jibrin, a 22-year-old staff of the state Youth Empowerment Scheme (NAYES) by a driver, Ibrahim Danbawa.

The Public Relations Officer of the command, ASP Samaila Usman, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Keffi that Jibrin was killed by the motorist when he (traffic warden) was on duty at Keffi roundabout controlling traffic.

NAN learnt that Jibrin died from injuries sustained from a vehicle knock-down, following Danbawa’s refusal to obey traffic rules.

The state PPRO, who urged the family members of the deceased and the community to remain calm and be law abiding, also confirmed that the culprit was in police custody.

He said the police would ensure a thorough investigation into the matter and that necessary action would be taken to serve as a deterrent.

“What really happened was that a NAYES officer who was controlling the traffic around the Keffi roundabout was suddenly knocked down by one driver called Danbawa, an indigene of Keffi.

“He was driving against the traffic and when the NAYES officer tried to stop him, he refused to pull up.

“So in the process, he hit the NAYES officer and when he was rushed to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Keffi, he gave up the ghost,” the police spokesman said.

Usman said that it took the intervention of policemen to douse the tension generated by some officers of the NAYES in the area over the killing of their colleague.

He, however, advised drivers to always obey traffic rules and regulation in the interest of peace and national development.

NAN reports that the state government had engaged young people in the state to serve as traffic wardens, sanitary inspectors and community watchers with a monthly stipend of N10,000. (NAN)

Police arrest 4 persons suspected to have killed father, daughter in Taraba

Jalingo, March 21, 2017 (NAN) The Taraba Police Command says it has arrested four persons suspected to have killed one Bernard Zaakaa and his daughter, Mimidoo, at Gazabu village in Bali Local Area of the state.

Its spokesman, Mr David Misal, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Jalingo, that Zaakaa and his four-year-old daughter were shot dead in their residence, on March 18.

The police official said that one Geoffrey Oguda, who was in the compound at the time of the attack, sustained injuries from gunshots.

“We have arrested the suspects and recovered two local guns, nine cartridges, two extended cartridges and some gun powder from them,” he said.

Misal said that the arrest followed a complaint lodged at a police station in Bali, by a younger brother to the deceased, Levi Zaakaa.

“Immediately we received the report of the incident that occurred around 7.30 p.m. on March 18, the police started combing the area and eventually arrested the suspects on March 19,” he said.

Students protest killing of colleague in Lafia

Lafia, March 20, 2017 (NAN) Students of Government Science School, Lafia on Monday took to the streets to protest the killing of one of their colleagues, allegedly by a family member of a senior government official.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), reports that the students, who held green leaves and placards with various inscriptions, marched from the school to the Government House, Lafia, a distance of five kilometres.

NAN also reports that it took the intervention of the Commissioner for Education, Tijjani Ahmed, and the police, to calm down the enraged students and persuade them to return to the school.

Addressing the students, Ahmed appealed to them to remain calm and assured them that the culprit would be brought to book.

“Since the accident happened around 8 p.m. on Sunday, both the management of the school and the state government have not rested.

“Already, the governor has constituted a committee that will meet with the family of the deceased, to commence burial arrangements,” he said.

NAN sources indicated that the deceased, whose name was given as Amos Ovey, was killed by a speeding car, when he stepped out of the premises to buy battery for his torch light.

Confirming the incident, Mr Maikudi Shehu, Police Area Commandant in charge of Lafia Area Command, said that the driver of the car was currently in detention.

“The driver and the car are in police custody; we want to assure members of the public that we shall dig into the matter and deal with whoever is involved, no matter his position in the society,” he said. (NAN)

Minna, Feb. 25, 2017 ( NAN) A handheld grenade exploded on Saturday at Bari village, Bangi Local Government Area of Niger, killing a soldier and two villagers.

According to Mr Bala Elkalla, spokesman of the Niger State Police Command, the explosive also injured four other villagers.

Elkalla said that the soldier, who is serving in Maiduguri, obtained permission to travel to his village and was with his relations when the tragedy struck.

“The soldier, who is a private in the Nigeria army, was demonstrating how the army successfully captured sambisa forest when the grenade exploded and killed him and two onlookers on the spot,” he said.

The police official said that the anti-bomb unit of the command had been drafted to the village and the residence of the late soldier to conduct a search “just in case there are more explosives”.

“It was not an attack; it was purely an accident. Normalcy has since returned to the village,” he said. (NAN)
