Emir of Dass tasks state legislators on good governance

Dass (Bauchi State), June 30, 2019 (NAN) The Emir of Dass in Bauchi state, Alhaji Billiyaminu Othman, has charged legislators to ensure good governance through effective grassroots representation.

Othman made the appeal when the Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Alhaji Abubakar Sulaiman, paid him a courtesy visit in Dass,

“The legislature is one of the major attributes of democratic governance and if effective, could ensure good governance and provide a forum for grassroots representation.

“As legislators represent various constituencies, you have direct contact with the local populace and are able to have a feel of their needs and concerns,” he said.

The monarch urged them to sustain the legacy of peace, cooperation and bridge-building which existed between the assembly and executive arm of government.

According to him, the oversight role of the legislature enables it to review, study and evaluate the implementation of laws including the use of public funds and resources.

Earlier, the speaker solicited for support from traditional institutions towards effective democratic process in the state.

He said traditional rulers have a vital role to play towards consolidating good governance and sustainable peace and stability for the betterment of the citizens.

Sulaiman pointed out that his visit to  the traditional rulers was to appreciate and thanked them for the role they have been playing towards the development of the state.

He reiterated that the legislature is the main organ of governance in a modern democracy, which plays a dual role of governance and also of representing the citizens in Government.

“It is the most singular institution that ensures representation of citizens giving them a feeling of inclusiveness; to feel that they own the Government by having a say in how its affairs are conducted,” he said.

Umaisha (Nasarawa State), Jan. 1, 2018 (NAN) The Chairman, All Progressives Congress (APC) in Nasarawa State, Mr Phillips Shekwo, has called on the state legislators to emulate their Speaker, Alhaji Ibrahim Abdullahi, on attracting development to the state.

Shekwo made the call on Monday in an interview with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) at Umaisha after the speaker empowered his constituents with economic materials and scholarship grant worth N15 million.

The chairman said that if other members of the house emulate the speaker gesture by embarking on projects that have direct bearing on the lives of their constituents, it would go a long way in not only improving on the standard of living of their constituents but would also boost the party.

“I also want you (Speaker) to give part of your heart to your members in different constituencies in the House of Assembly, let them follow your foot step for the development of their constituencies and the state at large.

“Give them part of your heart so that they can follow your foot steps because doing that will promote this party and the people will appreciate what this party is doing,” he said.

Shekwo appreciated the projects embarked upon by the speaker which have direct bearing on the lives of his constituents, the state and called for its sustenance.

He also urged the beneficiaries to use the items for the purpose it was meant for in order to improve on their standard of living.

Besides, the chairman called on the people of the state and Nigerians to support and pray for Gov. Tanko Al-Makura, President Muhammadu Buhari and other leaders to enable them succeed in initiating people oriented projects in the country, adding that prayer is key to the success of every individual and government.

He added that sustained prayers by the adherents of the two major religions would definitely assist the president, the governor and other leaders to overcome both economic and security challenges facing the country.

Shekwo also urged the people of the state and Nigerians to be law abiding, respect constituted authorities, shun negative tendencies, live in peace and tolerate one another irrespective of ethnic, religious and political affiliation.

NAN reports that the Speaker distributed N20,000 cash each to 100 students; N30,000 cash each to 100 women; 65 sewing machines; 12 refrigerators; 12 generating sets and over 700 wrappers to women in his constituency. (NAN)

Nasarawa legislative wives donate N4m materials to widows, inmates

Keffi (Nasarawa State), April 10, 2017 (NAN) The wives of legislators in Nasarawa State on Monday donated foodstuff and other items worth N4 million to patients, inmates and widows.

Hajiya Maryam Balarabe-Abdullahi, the Chairperson, Nasarawa State Legislative Wives Association (LEWA), told newsmen shortly after making the donation in Keffi.

The association also assisted the beneficiaries with undisclosed amount of money in Lafia, Akwanga and Keffi Local Government Areas.

Items donated including bags of rice, Semovita, cartoons of Indomie noodles, soap and detergent.

Balarabe-Abdullahi said the gesture was part of the association’s commitment towards alleviating the suffering of the less privileged in the society.

“First and foremost, we the state Legislative Wives Association (LEWA) thank God and appreciate Gov. Tanko Al-Makura for initiating good policies and programmes that have direct impacts on the lives of the people of the state.

“We visited and donated items and with cash to the sick ones at DASH, Lafia, the widows in Akwanga and the prison inmates in Keffi prisons worth N4 million as part of our humanitarian gesture to improve on the standard of living of the less privileged in the society.

“We deem it necessary to donate the items to also to make them happy and to show love, care to the sick ones, widows, inmates in the state and to let them know that they are very relevant to the society and we want to assure them of our continued support in that direction.

“We want to call on the widows and other women to remain steadfast and to be vanguard of peace in their various communities because peace is the necessary requirement for the development of any nation,” she said.

Balarabe-Abdullahi advised the inmates to be “agents of change, law abiding, respect constituted authority and remain peaceful’’ while serving their jail terms. (NAN AKW/AOM/MST

Yola, Feb. 23, 2017 (NAN) Gov. Mohammed Jibrilla of Adamawa on Thursday advised the people of Fufore community to re-elect their lawmakers for another tenure of eight years.

Jibrilla gave the advice when the Fufore community visited him at the Government House in Yola.

The governor noted that four years were inadequate to carry out an effective legislation that would deliver the dividends of democracy.

According to him, the process of law making is not an easy task, insisting that it will take a lawmaker a lot of time to get acquainted with legislative business.

Jibrilla noted that the lawmakers in the state House of Assembly were doing well in spite of the fact that majority of them were first timers.

The pledged to continue work in harmony with the law makers for the provision of good governance for the people of the state.

He condemned the action of youths who booed Alhaji Sadiq Ibrahim, the member representing Fufore/Song in the Federal House of Representatives.

NAN reports that some youths from Fufore, who were part of the delegation that visited the governor, had booed their representative, who was invited to give remarks at the occasion, for alleged non-performance.

NAN also reports that it took the timely intervention of security agents present to calm down the youths who were shouting at the member.

The governor, who urged the youths to be patient with their representatives, however, passed a vote of confidence on the Ibrahim, urging him not to be distracted by such actions.

Ibrahim, who described the action by the youths as the beauty of democracy; commended the governor for redeeming his campaign promises in the local government area.

NAN further reports that the member of the green chamber left the venue of the event ahead of the governor.

Also in his remarks, Alhaji Salisu Yapak, APC member representing Verre constituency in the state assembly, commended the governor for his developmental strides, especially in Fufore Local Government Area. (NAN)
