Osimhen’s goal fails to rescue Lille as Marseille close Ligue 1 gap

Lille (France), Feb. 17, 2020 (Reuters/NAN) Olympique de Marseille cut the lead by Paris St-Germain (PSG) at the top of Ligue 1 in France to 10 points on Sunday after a 2-1 win at Lille.

Two quickfire goals midway through the second half gave them the win after Nigerian international Victor Osimhen had given the hosts the lead.

Champions PSG are in pole position on 62 points from 25 games after Saturday’s 4-4 draw at Amiens.

Marseille have 52 points while Lille stayed fourth on 40 points after the visitors came from behind in an entertaining clash.

Osimhen twice came close in the first half before he fired Lille into a 51st minute lead.

He scored with a dinked shot over goalkeeper Steve Mandanda after he took a defence-splitting pass from Jonathan Bamba in his stride.

Marseille missed a penalty kick on the hour as home goalkeeper Mike Maignan saved Valentin Rongier’s spot kick after Tiago Djalo tripped Bouna Sarr, but Lille’s joy was short-lived.

The visitors levelled in the 67th minute as Lille defender Reinildo Mandava diverted Valerie Germain’s glancing header into his own net and the Marseille midfielder again turned provider two minutes later.

Germain broke loose on the right flank and sent a superb low cross for Argentine striker Dario Benedetto to tap the ball in at the near post and complete Marseille’s fightback.

Earlier on Sunday, Olympique Lyonnais continued their patchy form with a 1-1 home draw against Strasbourg after Kevin Lucien Zohi cancelled out Bertrand Traore’s opener for the home side.

The result left Lyon in 11th place on 34 points while Strasbourg moved one place up to seventh on 37.

Third-placed Rennes suffered a 1-0 setback at Stade Reims, while Brest stayed 13th after holding on for a 3-2 home win over struggling Saint Etienne.

First half goals from Paul Lasne, Gaetan Charbonnier and Irvin Cardona gave Brest a 3-0 lead.

Then the visitors, who remain hovering above the relegation zone in 16th position, set up a tense finish through Denis Bouanga and Lois Diony.(Reuters/NAN)

Ligue 1: Osimhen on target again as Lille beat Strasbourg

Paris, Sept. 25, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) Victor Osimhen scored his sixth league goal of the season to inspire Lille to a 2-0 home win against Racing Strasbourg in Ligue 1 on Wednesday.

The 20-year-old Nigerian opened the scoring and Loic Remy doubled the lead as the side from northern France moved up to third in the standings on 13 points from seven matches.

They are now two points behind leaders Paris St-Germain (PSG) who host Stade de Reims later on Wednesday.

Angers are second, behind PSG on goal difference, after Rachid Alioui’s late double gave them a 2-0 win at Toulouse.

Olympique Lyonnais extended their winless streak to six games in all competitions.

Goals by Maxwel Cornet and Moussa Dembele were cancelled out by Yoann Court’s double in a 2-2 draw at Stade Brestois.

Lille will take on Chelsea in the UEFA Champions League next week when Lyon, who are 10th in Ligue 1 on nine points, travel to RB Leipzig.(Reuters/NAN)

Ajax Amsterdam produce powerful reminder of their promise against Lille

Amsterdam, Sept. 17, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) Ajax Amsterdam gave a powerful reminder of their Champions League potential with a resounding 3-0 win over Lille in Amsterdam on Tuesday at the start of the group phase.

Last season’s surprise package look hellbent on a repeat of their heroics, which got them all the way from the preliminary rounds to the semi-finals.

And goals from Quincy Promes, Edson Alvarez and Nicolas Tagliafico ensured an emphatic start to Group H.

Having come through the preliminary rounds again, Ajax went ahead when Promes, one of their new signings, powered home a header after 18 minutes.

He got in-between two Lille defenders at the back post to finish off Tagliafico’s cross.

Alvarez, also bought since last season’s run to the final four of the Champions League, added the second goal in the 50th minute.

David Neres slipped him in with a short pass and the Mexican international hooked a stinging shot in from a tight angle.

Fullback Tagliafico, one of the smallest on the pitch at 1.73 metres, then rose majestically to head home Hakim Ziyech’s 62nd-minute corner and extend the Dutch club’s lead.

Lille, back in the Champions League for the first time since the 2012-13 season, had chances.

The visitors saw Jonathan Ikone, Victor Osimhen and Mehmet Zeki Celik all hit good efforts straight at Ajax goalkeeper Andre Onana.

In the last minute, substitute Yusuf Yazici crashed a shot against the upright but then hit the rebound over the top in the closest that last season’s Ligue 1 runners-up came to scoring.

Ajax are next away at Valencia on Oct. 2 while Lille host Chelsea the same night. (Reuters/NAN)

‎Lille draw at Reims to leave PSG on brink of title

Reims (France), April 7, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) Second-placed Lille were held to a 1-1 draw at Stade Reims on Sunday to leave leaders Paris St-Germain (PSG) on the brink of an eighth Ligue 1 title.

Rui Fontes’ second half opener was cancelled out by Reims’ Remi Oudin to leave Lille on 61 points with seven games left.

PSG, who have 80 points, will clinch the title if they beat Racing Strasbourg at the Parc des Princes later on Sunday.

At Reims’ Auguste Delaune Stadium, Fonte headed home 10 minutes into the second half from a Thiago Mendes corner kick.

Oudin equalised 12 minutes from full time with a low shot, after being set up by Tristan Dingome.

Reims are sixth on 47 points.(Reuters/NAN)
