Liverpool held in goalless derby at Everton to stay second

Liverpool (UK), March 3, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) Liverpool were left a point behind English Premier League (EPL) leaders Manchester City on Sunday after they were held to a 0-0 draw by Everton in the Merseyside derby.

Manchester City, who beat Bournemouth 1-0 on Saturday, have 71 points while Juergen Klopp’s Liverpool have 70 after their fourth draw in their last six games.

Both sides have nine matches left.

Mohamed Salah had the two best openings for Liverpool before the break.

But his soft 15th minute shot barely troubled Jordan Pickford and then the Everton goalkeeper was swift off his line to foil the Egyptian as he raced goalwards.

Everton’s approach was to harry and disrupt Liverpool and they did that task well.

But they also struggled to create opportunities with Theo Walcott unable to capitalise on a rare opening, screwing his shot wide.

Salah threatened again in the 57th minute as he bore down on Pickford, but Everton defender Michael Keane stopped a near certain goal with a perfectly timed last-ditch sliding tackle.

Klopp threw on Roberto Firmino in the 63rd minute in an attempt to salvage the situation.

But the striker was unable to open up an Everton defence that raised their game to deal a blow to their local rivals’ title hopes.(Reuters/NAN)

Liverpool held 1-1 by Leicester to stay 5 points ahead of EPL rivals

Liverpool (UK), Jan. 31, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) English Premier League leaders Liverpool failed to take full advantage of Manchester City’s Tuesday slip-up at Newcastle United as they drew 1-1 at home to Leicester City on Wednesday.

Juergen Klopp’s side did extend their lead over Manchester City to five points with the result.

But after their rivals suffered a 2-1 loss on Tuesday, Liverpool will be disappointed not to have pulled seven points clear.

Liverpool got off to the perfect start with Sadio Mane firing them ahead in the third minute.

He cut in from the left and beat goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel with a trademark strike into the far corner.

Klopp’s side were never able to find their full speed and rhythm and a solid Leicester drew level on the stroke of halftime.

A Liverpool clearance was headed deep into the area by Ben Chilwell and found England defender Harry Maguire who slotted home.

Roberto Firmino went close to a winner in the 75th minute with a well-struck effort but Schmeichel saved well to frustrate the Brazilian.

Liverpool, who have not won the title since 1990, moved to 61 points, with Manchester City on 56 points and Tottenham two points further back.(Reuters/NAN)
