Abuja, July 9, 2019 (NAN) The police on Tuesday docked a 33-year-old businessman, Emeka Jude, at a Kabusa Grade I Area Court, Abuja, over alleged mischief and causing hurt.
Emeka, who resides at Kabusa village, was alleged to have gravely injured one Vitus Ndubuisi, also of Kabusa village.
The Prosecutor, Mahmud Lawal, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on April 4, in a garden owned by him.
Lawal said that Ndubuisi reported the matter at the Kabusa Police Station.
He said the complainant reported that Emeka invited him over to his garden for Easter celebrations and that in the course of the celebration Emeka asked the complainant some questions which he refused to answer.
Lawal then alleged that Emeka got angry by the refusal of the complainant and then head-butted and injured him.
The prosecutor noted that the complainant sustained injuries on his left eye and mouth, as a result of the head-butt.
Lawal said the offence contravened Sections 240 and 326 of the Penal Code.
Emeka, however, pleaded not guilty to the two-count charge.
The Judge, Aliyu Kagarko, ordered the defendant to be remanded in Keffi Prison pending the hearing of bail application.
Kagarko adjourned the case until July 18 for hearing of the bail application. (NAN)

Ibadan, Aug.14, 2018, (NAN) The Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN), South West Zone, says its members stand to benefit immensely from the Economic Recovery Growth Plan (ERGP) of the Federal Government.

The Chairman of the association, Chief Kola Akosile, made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ibadan on Tuesday, while speaking on the activities of the organization in 2018.

“By and large i think we are beginning to see some good indices; foreign exchange has been stable, i think by and large the manufacturers are a bit happy but we want to be happier with the situation.

“The ERGP is just at the initial stage so the effect has not been felt; the major component is agribusiness and solid minerals.

“It is going to affect us in terms of our ability to source local raw materials so by the time this is implemented in its fullness i think it will have seasonal effect on manufacturers, more so it will reduce pressure on the foreign exchange so the rate will be stabilized also I think at the end of the day the ERGP will be good for us.”

According to the chairman, the organization is a very active member of the Organized Private Sector in the creation of employment.

He said: “The first half of the year has been generally okay except for issues like the free trade zone.

“MAN does not want Nigeria to be a dumping ground; we expect that there are going to be some precautions that will be put in place before Nigeria finally signs.

“While some members of the association have been okay, others in different industries are not; in some states we have elections which had affected some of our activities like in Ekiti State.” (NAN)

Dutse, March 12, 2018 (NAN) A 20-year-old man, Umar Muhammad, has committed suicide in Khandahar quarters of Hadejia Local Government Area, Jigawa.
The Police Spokesman in the state, SP Abdu Jinjiri, confirmed the incident to newsmen in Dutse on Monday.
Jinji said the corpse of the deceased was found on Sunday at about 6 p.m., hanged to a tree near a river in Hadejia.
“On March 11, the Police in Hadejia LGA received a report that that a hanged corpse was found by the river side in Hadejia town at about 6 p.m.
“Upon investigation, the Police discovered that the corpse was that of 20-year-old Umar Mohammed of Khandahar quarters.
“The corpse was taken to hospital for confirmation and later released to the family for burial,” Jinjiri said.
He said investigation into the case has commenced to uncover the circumstances behind the death of the deceased. (NAN)

Lagos, Dec. 28, 2017 (NAN) A 26-year-old unemployed, Alex Godwin, is to spend the next six months in prison for stealing a car battery, an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, has ruled.
The Magistrate, Mrs O.J. Awope, pronounced the verdict after the accused pleaded guilty to a charge of stealing on Thursday.
Awope, who sentenced Godwin without an option of fine, said the convict should serve the sentence with hard labour.
“You are hereby sentenced to six months imprisonment with hard labour and without an option of fine.
“The sentence would serve as a deterrent to others who might want to engage in similar acts,” she said.
Godwin, a resident of Alagbado in Ogun, had at his arraignment on Dec. 4 pleaded guilty to the offence and was remanded in prison.
When the case was called up for fact and sentence, he still admitted guilt but pleaded with the court to temper justice with mercy in sentencing him.
Earlier, the Prosecutor, ASP Ezekiel Ayorinde, had told the court that the accused committed the offence on Nov. 27 at Iju Road, Agege, Lagos.
He said that the accused stole a motor battery whose value and owner yet unknown.
“The accused was caught with the battery by security guards on the street.
“When he was questioned, he confessed that he removed the battery inside a commercial bus parked along the road,” he said.
The offence contravened Section 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised). (NAN)

Abuja, Dec. 20, 2017 (NAN) The Police on Wednesday arraigned one Uche Azubuike of Asokoro, Abuja, at a Wuse Zone 2 Senior Magistrates’ Court for alleged attempted cheating.
Azubuike is standing trial on a three-count charge of criminal conspiracy, false impersonation and attempt to commit an offence to wit cheating.
The prosecutor, Abdulrashid Isyaku, said that sometime in November, the defendant impersonated as a senior officer working in the office of the Inspector-General of police.
He said that the defendant and two others now at large, and with intent to commit the above offence, allegedly sent text messages to some members of the Nigerian Police Force (NPF).
Isyaku alleged that the defendant and the two persons at large, sent the messages requesting the supposedly would-be victims to pay some money to them for the cancellation of their supposed transfers to any state of the federation.
The prosecutor said that it was discovered during investigation that the defendant and his accomplices were members of the NPF.
He said that the offences contravened sections 97, 179 and 322 of the Penal Code.
The defendant however pleaded not guilty.
Senior Magistrate Teribo Jim granted the defendant bail in the sum of N500,000 with one surety in like sum.
Jim ruled that the surety must reside within the court’s jurisdiction.
He adjourned the case to Feb. 8, 2018, for hearing. (NAN)

Port Harcourt, April 21, 2017 (NAN) The remains of a young parishioner, simply identified as Kachi, was found hanging in the early hours of Friday at the Hall of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church Port Harcourt.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the development is causing panic among residents of the area.

NAN gathered that the deceased, an indigene of Imo, was a devoted Catholic and former Mass servant of the church. Some parishioners, at the scene, told NAN that the deceased was a taxi driver, who plied his trade at the popular Aggrey/Borokiri road in the city.

The parishioners expressed shock over the incident and wondered why the deceased would commit suicide especially, as he was a devoted Christian.

One of the parishioners, who identified himself as Magnus, said that late Kachi was popularly known as Fabregas due to his football skills and dedication to youth activities in the church.

“Kachi until his death was about 20 years old; unmarried and a hard working young man who was loved.

“We tried to locate where he lived but we were unable to do so due to the fact that he moved to a new apartment which is unknown to us.

“As we speak, nobody has come out to say exactly why Kachi killed himself,” he said.

Another member of the church, who gave her name as Nkechi, alleged that the deceased took his life because the owner of the taxi retrieved the vehicle from him few days ago.

“Kachi was not married and had been sleeping in the church hall.

“The taxi he drove was on hire purchase and I learnt that the owner of the vehicle took back the car; maybe because he wasn’t meeting up with condition of their agreement.

“I learnt that he took his life out of frustration caused by the seizure of the vehicle,” she said.

The Rivers Police Command was yet to confirm the report as DSP Omoni Nnamdi, the Police Public Relations Officer, did not answer calls nor replied messages sent to his cell phone by NAN.

The church authority is also yet to commend on the development.

Meanwhile, the corpse of the deceased had been taken to an undisclosed morgue in Port Harcourt. (NAN)

Makurdi, April 20, 2017 (NAN) The Police on Thursday arraigned a 23-year-old man, Samuel Aondofa, for allegedly disguising as a woman so as to gain sexual advances from men.

Aondofa, popularly known as “Deborah”, appeared before a Makurdi Chief Magistrate’s court charged with criminal deception.

According to the police prosecutor, Mr Omaye Ujata, one Vivian Enger, a resident of International Market area, Makurdi, reported the case at the “E” Division police station.

Ujata quoted Enger as saying that the accused, a resident of Tyogbenda Jagh-Kur village in Buruku Local Government Area of Benue, disguised himself as a woman and was employed as a sales girl at her (Enger)’s beer parlour located in the said village.

He further quoted Enger as saying that Aondofa changed his name to “Deborah” so as to attract the attention of male customers.

“The accused was later discovered after series of complaints from customers. He was arrested and, during police investigation, confessed to the crime,” the prosecutor told the court.

Ujata said that investigation into the matter was ongoing and pleaded with the court for additional time to complete it.

He said that the offense contravened Section 285 of the Penal Code Laws of Benue State.

However, when the case came up for mention, the accused denied all the allegations.

The Magistrate, Ibrahim Mohammed, granted the accused bail in the sum of N50,000 with one reasonable surety in  like sum, who must be resident in Makurdi town.

Mohammed adjourned the case to May 11 for further mention. (NAN).

Makurdi, April 7, 2017 (NAN) A 48-year-old man, Stephen Sunday, alleged to have issued a dud cheque for N4.3 million to a Cooperative Society in Oturkpo in Benue, appeared before a Makurdi Magistrate’s Court, on Friday.

According to the prosecutor, Mr Adama Owochio, the accused, a resident of Makurdi, had collected N3.5 million loan from Bristol Investment Cooperative Society Limited, Oturkp, at a 20 per cent interest.

The loan was expected to be paid within one month.

“The loan period expired on July 19, 2016 without payment and one Mr E. O. Samson petitioned the Commissioner of Police on the matter on Feb. 28, on behalf of the cooperative society.

“In the petition, Sunday was accused of issuing a Zenith Bank cheque for N4,291,896, to the cooperative society on Feb. 7.

“It further said that when the cheque was presented at the bank, it was returned on the ground that the accused account had no such money,” he said.

Owochio said that the accused person was subsequently arrested and, during investigation, confessed to the crime.

The plea of the accused person was not taken but his counsel, Abah James, applied for his bail.

The Magistrate, Mrs. Franca Yuwa, granted the accused bail in the sum of N100,000 with a fit surety in like sum.

Yuwa ruled that the surety must be resident in Makurdi, and adjourned the case till April, 13 for further hearing. (NAN)

Jos, March 21, 2017 (NAN) A Jos Chief Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday sentenced a 29-year-old security man, Samson Williams, to three months in prison, for stealing two necklaces and a face-cap valued at N6, 500.

Williams, who resides behind Police Field, Jos, was charged with theft.

The magistrate, Mrs. Oluwatoyin Mafuyai, sentenced the convict after he pleaded guilty to the crime and begged the court for leniency.

The convict, in his plea, blamed hunger and the “devil” for his actions.

“It was hunger that made me do it; I was very hungry and wanted something to eat.

“I have not been paid salary for two months and wanted to sell the items so that I can have small money.

“It is the work of the devil, have mercy on me. I will not do it again,” he pleaded.

The magistrate, in her sentence, however, gave the convict a fine option of N3,000.

She said that the sentence was meant to serve as a deterrent to those who might want to engage in similar acts.

Earlier, the police prosecutor, Mr Yongu Terngu, had told the court that one Eunice John, who said she was a resident of Popular Hotel, Jos, reported the matter at the ‘A’ Division police station, on March 11.

Terngu alleged that the accused person went into the complainant’s hotel room, while she was away, and removed two necklaces and a face-cap all valued at N6, 500.

“The accused person was apprehended at the police field and when a search was conducted on him, the items were found on him,” he said.

The prosecutor further alleged that a mobile phone, a phone battery and a power bank, suspected to be stolen items, were also recovered from Williams.

He said that the offence contravened section 288 of the Penal Code. (NAN)

Minna, March 16, 2017 (NAN)‎ A 62-year-old man, Mohammed Sani, on Thursday appeared before a Minna Magistrate’s Court, charged with raping a three-year-old girl.

According to the prosecutor, Ahmed Ali, the offence runs foul of section ‎18 (2) of the Child Rights Law of Niger State 2010.

Ali told the court that one Lucia Umoru, a resident of Maitumbi, in Minna, reported the matter at the Minna police station, on March 8.

Ali quoted the complainant as alleging that the accused lured her neighbour’s d‎aughter into his room and forcefully had sexual intercourse with her, leading to severe injuries on her genitals.

When the charge was read to the accused person, he pleaded not guilty, prompting the prosecutor to ask for an adjournment‎.

“The adjournment is to enable the police complete its investigation into the case,” he said.

The Magistrate, Sa’adatu Gambo, ordered the accused to be remanded in prison custody, and adjourned the matter to March 22, for further mention. (NAN)
