Manchester City take big step towards title with derby win at United

Manchester (UK), April 24, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) Manchester City took a big step towards retaining the Premier League title with a 2-0 win over Manchester United at Old Trafford on Wednesday.

The win sent the Cityzens back to the top of the table.

City have 89 points, one more than rivals Liverpool, with both teams having three games to play.

Second half goals from Bernardo Silva and Leroy Sane ensured a comfortable win for City against a United side that remain in sixth place, outside the Champions League qualification slots.

United, smarting from their 4-0 hammering at Everton on Sunday, played with aggression and energy in the scoreless first half but the game was put beyond them after the break.

Bernardo Silva picked the ball up on the right flank and cut inside, surprising United keeper David De Gea with a low drive that sneaked in the bottom corner in the 54th minute.

Twelve minutes later and City doubled their lead.

Smooth Manchester City outclass Manchester United with 3-1 derby win

Manchester (UK), Nov. 11, 2018 (Reuters/NAN) English Premier League leaders Manchester City turned on the style with a 3-1 win over Manchester United in their derby clash on Sunday.

The result left Pep Guardiola’s unbeaten side two points clear of Liverpool at the top.

A long season remains for Manchester City to prove again their dominance in the English Premier League.

But, there is no doubt at all about who are the top dogs in the city of Manchester.

It was not until the 86th minute, when substitute Ilkay Gundogan finished off a 44-pass move for City’s third that the outcome was decided.

But when it came to the quality of their football, their passing, movement, organisation, individual flair and pace, Manchester City were in a different league from Jose Mourinho’s side.

Manchester United are now 12 points behind Manchester City, languishing in eighth place.

That gap was evident throughout this encounter where Manchester United could offer little more than determination and effort in response to the smooth and stylish display from the champions.

David Silva fired Manchester City ahead in the 12th minute after a Raheem Sterling cross from the left was turned back across the goal by Bernardo Silva.

The Spaniard took his time before blasting home.

For the rest of the half, Cape Town City were comfortable in possession, probing but not overly threatening Manchester United’s goal.

They were seemingly content to wait for a response from Mourinho’s men.

But in just the third minute after the interval, Manchester City doubled their lead.

Aguero burst goalwards to play a clever exchange with Riyad Mahrez, before thumping the ball, from a tight angle, past David de Gea.

Mourinho brought on Romelu Lukaku for Jesse Lingard in the 57th minute and within seconds the Belgian forward helped get his team back in the game.

Lukaku was brought down inside the area by Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson and French forward Anthony Martial confidently converted the spot kick.

But it was a false dawn, as Manchester United came back from two goals down to win this fixture. last season.

They showed similar character in their UEFA Champions League win at Juventus on Wednesday.

But they did not have the tools to open up Manchester City nor keep their own rearguard secure.

Four minutes from the end City secured the victory, their 10th in 12 games this season, when the outstanding Bernardo Silva picked out German Gundogan in the area.

No celebration for City after United comeback derby win

Manchester (UK), April 7, 2018 (Reuters/NAN)  Manchester City’s Premier League title celebrations were put on hold as rivals Manchester United produced a remarkable comeback from two goals down to win their derby clash 3-2 at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday.

A win for City would have clinched the title but instead their first home defeat in the league this season leaves Pep Guardiola’s side with a 13 point lead with six games remaining.

City left several regular starters on the bench ahead of Tuesday’s Champions League quarter-final second leg against Liverpool.

Nonetheless, they were 2-0 up within half an hour thanks to a Vincent Kompany header from a corner and a clever finish from Ilkay Guendogan.

But two goals from Paul Pogba in the 53rd and 55th minutes brought United level.

Chris Smalling, left unmarked in the box, then grabbed the winner in the 69th minute – side-footing home a floated free kick from Alexis Sanchez.

City felt they should have had a penalty when substitute Sergio Aguero went down under a challenge from Ashley Young.

They also came close to an equaliser when David de Gea made a brilliant save to keep out a header from Aguero and Raheem Sterling hit the post.

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho said after the match that his team deserved more respect: “We deserve a bit more respect than people give.

“I think we are a bit better than what people think.  The players are a bit better than what people think and I am a bit better than what people think.”

Mourinho also told reporters that he congratulated Guardiola after the game on winning the title, regardless of  today’s result.

“Of course they are frustrated because they wanted to do it today, but I congratulate them for the title because they are going to win and deservedly,” he said.

Pep Guardiola, on the other hand, said he was focusing his attention on the crunch tie against Liverpool: “We will try to pick ourselves up for Liverpool, we are professionals,” he said.

“It is a special day for United, which is a pity. We did absolutely everything in the first half but then for 10-15 minutes we conceded goals. It is what it is.

“But we move forward. We did everything in the first half, we played with courage and created so many chances. Some penalties in the first half, some in the second half, but we have to improve.” (Reuters/NAN)
