Everton draw with Manchester United after late goal ruled out by VAR

Liverpool (UK), March 1, 2020 (Reuters/NAN) Everton and Manchester United drew 1-1 at Goodison Park in the English Premier League (EPL) on Sunday in an enthralling game which ended in VAR drama.

A dreadful error from Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea gifted Everton a third-minute opener.

The Spaniard dawdled on the ball after a backpass from Harry Maguire and his attempted clearance was charged down by Dominic Calvert-Lewin and flew off the Everton striker into the net.

Calvert-Lewin should have doubled the lead shortly afterwards when he broke free of the Manchester United defence, but he shot just wide of De Gea’s right-hand post.

Manchester United responded well to the early setback though, with Nemanja Matic hitting the crossbar with a long-range effort.

He then forced Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford into a diving save with another well-struck drive.

It was January signing Bruno Feranandes who put the visitors level with a superb low shot from outside the penalty box in the 31st minute.

Everton’s Icelandic midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson hit the post with a curling free kick 12 minutes after the interval but Manchester United went close to a winner in the 90th minute.

Pickford had to produce a brilliant save with his feet to deny substitute Odion Ighalo.

There was VAR drama in stoppage time when Everton thought they had a winner.

Calvert-Lewin’s low shot deflected off Harry Maguire and span past Sigurdsson who was lying on the floor in what the video referee ruled was an offside position.(Reuters/NAN)

Manchester United win 2-0 at Chelsea to close up on EPL top four

London, Feb. 18, 2020 (Reuters/NAN) Headed goals from Anthony Martial and Harry Maguire earned Manchester United a 2-0 win at Chelsea on Monday.

The win put them back in the hunt for a top four 2019/2020 English Premier League (EPL) finish.

In a high tempo, if often scrappy game, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s Manchester United side made the most of their chances.

But Chelsea, whose form at home has been suspect all season, squandered a string of opportunities.

A fine glancing header from Anthony Martial just before half-time from an Aaron Wan-Bissaka cross put the visitors ahead.

It was Manchester United’s first Premier League goal in four games.

Defender Harry Maguire made it two in the 66th minute, losing marker Antonio Rudiger to head home from a corner kick by Manchester United’s new Portuguese signing Bruno Fernandes.

Chelsea had two goals ruled out by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR).

Kurt Zouma scored from a corner kick in the 54th minute but there was a push in the area.

Substitute striker Olivier Giroud’s headed effort in the 77th minute was cancelled when he was adjudged marginally offside.

The loss left Chelsea fourth, a point clear of resurgent rivals Tottenham Hotspur led by their ex-coach Jose Mourinho and who they host on Saturday.

Lively Manchester United earn 3-1 win over Brighton

Manchester (UK), Nov. 10, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) Manchester United climbed back into the top half of the Premier League table on Sunday, with a 3-1 home win over Brighton and Hove Albion.

Goals from Andreas Pereira and Marcus Rashford and an own goal from Davy Propper gave the home side an assured win.

United climbed to seventh place on 16 points from 12 games after stretching their unbeaten home run against the Seagulls to 12 matches in all competitions.

Brighton slipped to 11th place on 15 points.

Pereira fired United ahead in the 17th minute with a fortuitous goal, as his shot from inside the penalty area took a heavy deflection off Dale Stephens.

The deflection left Brighton goalkeeper, Matthew Ryan, stranded.

Propper then bundled the ball into his own net two minutes later as an in-swinging free-kick from Fred caused havoc in Brighton’s six-yard box.

The goal was awarded after a VAR check.

Lewis Dunk pulled one back for Brighton in the 64th minute with a close-range header, but Rashford restored United’s two-goal advantage two minutes later.

EPL: Manchester United held by Arsenal as both struggle to shine

Manchester (UK), Sept. 30, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) Manchester United were held to a 1-1 draw at home by Arsenal on Monday in a Premier League game which was a poor imitation of some of the past clashes between the clubs.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s 58th minute goal, given after VAR review, cancelled out Scott McTominay’s well-struck opener on the stroke of halftime, but it was a game which highlighted the weaknesses of the two teams.

The result leaves United in 10th place with just nine points, their worst start after seven games for 30 years and they have won just one of their last six league games.

Arsenal are in fourth spot on 12 points but their nine-point gap with leaders Liverpool illustrates just how far away they are from being real contenders.

This fixture is part of the folklore of the Premier League era, producing some epic battles between Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger’s title-winning sides.

And while there is certainly a retrospective feel to Old Trafford under the lights and in the rain, the only throwback on the field was some of the heavy and late challenges.

There are multiple weaknesses in both teams but what stood out when they faced each other was the utter lack of class and quality in midfield.

Arsenal look lightweight and lacking any real spine while United, despite having Paul Pogba back from injury, were short of attacking options and creativity.

United keeper David De Gea pulled off a fine double-save in the 44th minute, pushing out a low shot from Bukayo Saka and then doing well to keep out Matteo Guendouzi’s follow-up.

Moments later, United had the lead when Marcus Rashford found McTominay on the edge of the box and his slightly deflected shot towards the top corner beat the motionless Arsenal keeper Bernd Leno.

Arsenal got back on level terms in controversial circumstances in the 58th minute with a goal from Aubameyang.

United left-back Axel Tuanzebe gave the ball away to Saka who threaded through to Aubameyang but the linesman raised his flag well before the Gunners striker put the ball past De Gea.

VAR review correctly showed that Harry Maguire had played Aubameyang onside and the goal was then given.

However, United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer appeared furious that the linesman had flagged when recent practice has been for the flag not to be shown until the end of a move.

McTominay then missed a glorious chance to secure the three points and his growing reputation when, from an Ashley Young corner, he headed over the bar from close range.

Leno then made two good saves to keep Unai Emery’s side on level terms.

Manchester United go fourth as Rashford penalty kick beats Leicester City

Manchester (UK), Sept. 14, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) Manchester United moved up to fourth in the English Premier League (EPL) after a Marcus Rashford penalty kick gave them a 1-0 win over Leicester City at Old Trafford on Saturday.

Manchestee United, who were without injured French pair Paul Pogba and Anthony Martial, were far from convincing.

However, manager Ole Gunnar Solksjaer will be delighted they secured their second win of the campaign to move on to eight points.

After Andreas Pereira had forced Leicester goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel into action with a powerful free-kick, Manchester United got ahead in the eighth minute.

Rashford, chasing down a loose ball in the area, went down under a challenge from Leicester City’s Turkish defender Caglar Soyuncu and referee Martin Atkinson pointed to the penalty kick spot.

Manchester United had missed their two previous penalty kicks this season, including Rashford’s failure from the spot against Crystal Palace last month, but the England forward made no mistake this time.

Van Aanholt gives Crystal Palace shock 2-1 win at Manchester United

Manchester (England), Aug. 24, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) A stoppage-time goal by defender Patrick van Aanholt gave Crystal Palace a memorable 2-1 win at Manchester United after a toothless display by the home side in the Premier League on Saturday.

Van Aanholt powered a shot past United keeper David De Gea following a howler by Paul Pogba.

Daniel James had scored in the 89th minute to cancel out a first-half opener by Jordan Ayew for the visitors.

Ayew scored against the run of play in the 32nd minute as Palace punished United’s lack of creativity in midfield and bite up front, with Marcus Rashford missing a 70th-minute penalty for the home side.

Palace were rewarded for their first foray into the United half as Jeffrey Schlupp headed on goalkeeper Vicente Guaita’s punt up field and Ayew was on hand to steer a low shot past De Gea after taking the ball in his stride.

With time running out for United, Wales winger James equalised when he curled a delightful shot into the top corner but the home side’s joy was short-lived as Palace grabbed the winner several minutes later.

Pogba, who missed a penalty in Monday’s 1-1 draw at Wolverhampton Wanderers, compounded another poor performance.

He gave the ball away in the danger zone and Van Aanholt pounced to beat De Gea with a low shot from 12 metres. (Reuters/NAN)
