NEMA will encourage traders, residents to insure property in 2020 -Coordinator

Enugu, Jan. 14, 2020 (NAN) The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) says it will introduce insurance and taking up insurance policy to traders and residents of the South-East in 2020.

The South-East Zonal Coordinator of NEMA, Mr Fred Anusim, disclosed this to News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Enugu on Monday.

Anusim was speaking on plans to reduce losses associated with disasters within the zone this year.

NAN reports that the zone have four major frequent and yearly recurring disasters, which included; flood, fire, windstorm and erosion.

Anusim said that as part of its prevention and risk mitigation strategy, the Agency would partner with insurance firms and brokers as well as incorporate them as part of its zonal wide sensitisation team this year.

“At any sensitisation and public awareness against natural or man-made disasters in the zone, we will be going with people from the insurance sub-sector.

“They will help to further enlighten our people and let them know the immense benefits inherent in insuring not only their goods but other aspects of their lives.

“It is really abnormal that we have businessmen and women, whose businesses or goods worth multi-million and there is no insurance to back such a business to mitigate it risk,’’ he said.

The zonal coordinator noted that indemnity that insurance pay during losses would surely resuscitate any business back to life.

According to him, this indemnity outweighs whatever NEMA or state government could give as succour to traders and residents. (NAN)

NEMA, FRSC deploy 3,000 personnel, mobile clinic for Yuletide in Adamawa

Yola, Dec. 24, 2019 (NAN) The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) in collaboration with Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) had deployed no fewer than 3,350 personnel to ensure smooth road traffic in Adamawa during the Yuletide.

Mr Abani Garki, NEMA Head of Operations in charge of Adamawa and Taraba States, disclosed this at the flag off of Operations Eagle Eye safety programme on Tuesday in Yola.

Garki said the operation was initiated by the agency to compliment the FRSC efforts in maintaining accident free Christmas and New year festivities.

“The agency had deployed several emergency staff and Mobile Clinic to compliment Federal Road Safety Corps efforts in ensuring rules and regulation of road traffic,” Garki said.

On his part, Mr Hussaini Muhammed, the Commander, Adamawa Road Safety Command, commended NEMA for the initiative.

Muhammed said FRSC and NEMA shared many things in common, and therefore called for effective collaboration.

“So far, the state Command in collaboration with NEMA deployed 3,350 personnel and about 26 ambulances and Mobile Clinic.

“The effort is to ensure safety on major highways across the state during Christmas and New Year festivities,” Muhammed said. (NAN)

Lagos, Sept. 10, 2019 (NAN) The first batch of Nigerians being evacuated from South Africa by the Federal Government following the ongoing xenophobic attacks would return on Wednesday by 2 p.m., an official has said.
Mr Ibrahim Farinloye, Spokesperson for the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), South West Zone, confirmed the development to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Lagos.
Farinloye said, barring any unforeseen circumstances, the Air Peace B777 aircraft, volunteered by the airline to evacuate Nigerians, would arrive on Sept. 11 at the Cargo Wing of the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos.
He explained that the aircraft would take off on Tuesday night from Lagos to South Africa to bring home the first batch of the over 600 Nigerians.
The evacuation had earlier suffered a setback as it was discovered that most of those interested in the process had expired passports.
However, the Nigerian High Commission in Pretoria and Johannesburg had prepared Travel Certificates to the affected Nigerians to facilitate their return.
President Muhammadu Buhari had also on Monday ordered the immediate evacuation of Nigerians who had indicated interest to leave South Africa after receiving report from the Special Envoy deployed to the country.
The government earlier issued travel advice to Nigerians intending to visit South Africa due to the xenophobic attacks on Nigerians and other foreign nationals. (NAN)

Aisha Buhari commiserates with families of victims of Lagos building collapse

Abuja, March 15, 2019 (NAN) The wife of the President, Mrs Aisha Buhari, has commiserated with the families of victims of building collapse in Itafaji, Lagos.

Buhari, in a condolence message sent through her tweeter handle on Friday, prayed to God to grant the families the fortitude to bear the loss.

‘‘My thoughts and prayers are with the families of the victims, especially innocent children who died and some who are still trapped in the rubble of the collapsed building in Itafaji, Lagos.

‘‘I pray the state government and the rescue agencies are able to save more children,” she said. (NAN)

2.The Nigeria Immigration Service has rescued a 23-year-old girl from human traffickers in Katsina State.

The Comptroller of the service in the state, Mr Ajisafe Olusola, said the victim was rescued by its operatives at Kongolam, a border town with Niger Republic after traffickers took her from her parents on the pretense of securing a job for her abroad.

3.The National Bureau of Statistics says a total of 509,668,433 transactions valued at N32.90 trillion were recorded in the banking sector during the second quarter.

The bureau stated this in its 2018 second quarter report on “Selected Banking Sector Data: Sectorial Breakdown of Credit, ePayment Channels and Staff Strength released in Abuja.

4.The Federal Government has announced its recognition of the Amaju Pinnick-led executive as the authentic leadership of the Nigeria Football Federation.

Laolu Akande, Special Assistant to Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, made the announcement on his official Twitter handle on Monday at 11.38 a.m., few minutes before the 12 p.m. deadline given by FIFA for the resolution of the leadership tussle in the Nigerian football governing body.

It said the government had already informed FIFA of the decision.

5.Mali’s constitutional court on Monday confirmed President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita’s re-election in a run-off ballot, rejecting fraud accusations by the opposition candidateSoumaila Cisse.

The decision clears the way for Keita to be inaugurated next month for a second five-year term, at a time when Malian authorities are contending with rising violence by jihadist groups and ethnic militia.

  1. The National Emergency Management Agency says it has received another batch of 160 assisted voluntary returnees from Libya, who were stranded in failed attempts to reach different European countries.

The Planning Officer of NEMA, Mr Segun Afolayan, said the returnees arrived at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, through the assistance of the International Organisation for Migration.

  1. An Islamic NGO, Al-Habibiyyah Islamic Society has thrown its weight behind the Federal Government’s anti-corruption war with a call on other religious organisations to follow suit.

The Executive Director of the organisation, Imam Adeyemi said that the organisation through its anti-corruption NGO, the “Just Foundation’’ was out to solicit support of other Islamic groups, religious leaders, Imams and scholars across the country on how to preach against corruption.

  1. The World Food Programme says it has spent 126million dollars to provide food aid in various forms to 1.2million people in 16 Northern Nigerian states since 2017.

 

The agency’s Head of Communication in Nigeria Ms. Ingermarie Vennize, listed the states as Katsina, Kaduna,Taraba, Zamfara,Sokoto,Kano, Yobe, Borno, Adamawa, Bauchi, Benue, Gombe, Jigawa, Kebbi, Plateau and Niger.

  1. President Paul Biya of Cameroon says he will run for re-election in October, aiming to extend his 36-year rule and maintain his place on a shortening roster of long-standing African leaders.

  1. Postal voting has started in Zimbabwe ahead of the July 30 General Elections, the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission has said.

Abuja, June 19, 2018 (NAN) Employees of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) on Tuesday staged a protest at the agency’s headquarters in Abuja over poor conditions of service and “redundancy”.
Mr Justin Uwazuruonye, the Chairman, Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria (ASCSN), NEMA Unit,  who led the protest and spoke on behalf of the staff, therefore called on the Federal Government to investigate their grievances.

“You can see that we are peaceful people; what we are demanding is for NEMA to start to function again.
“In the past one year do you have any annual report?  No! We have been redundant.
“Let the government ask Maihaja  to produce the annual report (of the agency) for the past one year since he has been here.
“We want the government to come here and investigate our allegations and hear our side of the story.
“Our condition of service is very poor,  we come to the office and sit for hours without doing anything; we don’t have tools to work.
“No papers and other writing materials for us to work with. It is killing our morale. These are our problems, beginning with not being able to do our work to failure to pay us what is due to us as workers.
“We’ll stand on them until the Federal Government hears us.
“Even the police know the truth and we have been working with them, they know that NEMA is not working, let them put a call through to our call centre now and see whether the call will gI through.
“If there was to be an accident on the road now, there won’t be response from NEMA, because there is no diesel and battery in the cars to be able to move.
” Corruption is not only about stealing money, we have what we call moral corruption.”

The chairman further alleged that although the Muhammad Buhari-led administration was doing its best by providing NEMA with all the necessary support needed for prompt response to emergencies, nothing was being actualised.
Also speaking, Ms. Maryam Yau, the agency’s Senior Disaster Risk Reduction Officer, said it was regrettable that Nigeria had lost its position as a country at the forefront of prompt response to disasters in Africa.
She said that NEMA had collapsed under its present management as the employees had become unproductive.
“Disaster continues to increase in this country, but people are not being helped.
“The government is doing its best, the government is giving the appropriate funding for us to actually respond to the people, but it is not happening.
“It’s frustrating; our ambulances are there parked beside the road not working; where is the effort of all the previous administrations?
“Nigeria used to set the pace in disaster management in Africa.
“We had been doing well, we even used to go to other countries to train their people on disaster management, but now we can’t do that.
“We need to work; please, we are begging the government to come to our rescue.”
The agency had in a statement signed by its Head of Media and Public Relations, Mr Sani Datti a day to the protest, said there was no justification for the demonstration as most of the demands of the staff had either been addressed or were being addressed.
He said that in Sept. 2017, an  agreement was reached between the two parties to the dispute, which included the payment in batches, of Overtime Allowances, DTAs and other claims that had accrued since 2015.
“On the issue of staff promotion, the Department of Human Resources Management has concluded preparations, briefs and other related cases, such as conversion, upgrading, confirmation, etc.
“The Renewal of Group Life Insurance which is at the centre of the present disagreement has been approved after going through rigorous due process.
“However, the commitment of government was invigorated by the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.
“A meeting between the NEMA management and the union’s officials was convened where government’s efforts at providing better conditions of service for NEMA staff were discussed.”
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the union went on strike on June 11 in protest against the collapse of the agency’s Emergency Response Ambulance Bays, which had been able to respond to more than 1,000 incidences in 2015 alone. (NAN)

Abuja, Feb. 22, 2017 (NAN) Alhaji Muhammad Sani-Sidi, the Director-General, National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), has called for end to insurgency in the country.

Sani-Sidi said that identifying the root causes of the insurgency in Nigeria would help in curbing the menace.

Mr Sani Datti, Head of Media and Public Relations of NEMA, quoted the director-general saying this in a statement on Wednesday in Abuja.

He said that Sani-Sidi spoke while receiving participants of the Security and Intelligence course of the Institute for Security Studies, Bwari, Abuja.

“Sani-Sidi called on them to use their experiences to identify the root causes of the insurgency that has ravaged the North East and other part of the country with a view to curbing it.’’

He said that once there is synergy along with constant simulation and trainings in handling issues, the government and relevant stakeholders will have the ability to confront disasters head on.

According to him, the director-general noted that in disaster management, there is never enough funding, but there must be provisions for predictable funding, which NEMA has been privy to.

He said that the North East has been faced with the insurgency since 2009, which has led to the loss of lives, means of livelihood, destruction of public infrastructures and properties of people.

According to Sani-Sidi, the driving mechanism of the Boko Haram insurgents needed to be identified so that their attacks and activities can be defeated.

The Director of the institute, Mr Mathew Sieyefa, who led the participants, said that their visit has availed them the opportunity to learn from NEMA’s experience in disaster management.

He said they would gather the experience from the agency and integrate emergency and security issues as part of its programmes, as the institute has been structured to reflect local and international experiences.

Seiyefa said that security and intelligence is never complete without disaster management. (NAN)

Ministry partners NEMA to prevent waterborne disease

Abuja, Jan. 4, 2017 (NAN) The Federal Ministry of Water Resources is partnering with the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to prevent the outbreak of waterborne disease in Nigeria.

Mrs Elizabeth Ugoh, Deputy Director, Water Quality Control and Sanitation in the ministry, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Wednesday that the collaboration would ensure improved livelihood.

Ugoh said such response include the promotion of good hygiene practices, provision of safe drinking water and toilet facilities, to improve the overall living conditions of Nigerians.

She said its partnership with NEMA was specifically targeted at emergencies, especially in Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camps, and promotion of overall well being of such persons.

According to her, persons living in the IDPs Camps in the North-East are in continuous need of water and accessible toilets facilities, which should not be ignored.

Ugoh said that although inadequate funds was still a challenge, development partners such as UN Children’s Fund and the UN High Commission on Refugees, had been partnering to improve sanitation and hygiene.

She said that access to water and sanitation had reduced incidences of preventable deaths, adding that it was necessary to scale up actions on these needs.

Ugoh said that Water Sanitation Hygiene (WASH) interventions could interrupt diarrhea transmission, and reduce the burden of morbidity and mortality associated with faecal-oral.

The deputy director said Nigeria needed to improve its policies at increasing access to water, sanitation and hygiene.

She urged private individuals and industrialists to take ownership of improving sanitation in their local communities.

Ugoh said that such ownership would reduce the spread of preventable diseases, boost healthy living, and promote a more productive citizenry.

The official said that globally, no fewer than 500, 000 children die annually from preventable diseases caused by unsafe water and sanitation.

She said it was important for all stakeholders to play their part to ensure that Nigerians live healthy, dignified and productive lives.

Ugoh, however, called on Nigerians to have clear plans and programmes on water and sanitation, to enable it to meet the Sustainable Development Goals on universal access to water and sanitation by 2030.

She said that that there was need for all tiers of government to take ownership of improving WASH service to all Nigerians. (NAN)
