Newcastle United edge past dogged West Brom to reach FA Cup quarter-finals

West Bromwich (UK), March 3, 2020 (ReutersNAN) Miguel Almiron struck twice as Newcastle United reached the FA Cup quarter-finals for the first time since 2006 with a 3-2 win at second tier West Bromwich Albion on Tuesday.

Joelinton headed wide early on for the Magpies, supported by a big away following at the Hawthorns, with the Brazilian forward then denied by goalkeeper Jonathan Bond.

Allan Saint-Maximin hit the post before going on a fine individual run to tee up Almiron for the English Premier League (EPL) side’s opener after 33 minutes.

The Paraguay international grabbed his second on the stroke of half-time before combining again with Saint-Maximin for the third.

He set up Valentino Lazaro for his first goal since he arrived on loan from Inter Milan in January.

Kyle Edwards hit the crossbar before Matt Phillips pulled one back for the hosts.

Lacazette ends goal drought as Arsenal crush Newcastle United 4-0

London, Feb. 16, 2020 (Reuters/NAN) Substitute, Alexandre Lacazette ended his goal drought as Arsenal secured their first Premier League win since New Year’s Day with a 4-0 victory over Newcastle United at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday.

Lacazette had gone nine games in all competitions without a goal before he found the target with a mis-hit shot in the final moments of the game.

The win moves Arsenal up to 10th position and will give them hope they can make a late push towards European qualification for next season.

After a goalless first half, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang put the Gunners in front with a powerful header from a Nicolas Pepe cross.

Pepe himself added the second, from close range after good work from the impressive Bukayo Saka.

Newcastle had opportunities to get back in the game with Allan Saint-Maximin hitting the post and Ciaran Clark missing a great chance from close range.

But Mesut Ozil put the game beyond the Magpies with his first goal of the season with a tap-in after a flowing Arsenal move involving 35 passes and touches from all 11 players.

It was the most passes for any goal in the league this season.

Lacazette, left on the bench with youngster Eddie Nketiah, finished off a smart move for Mikel Arteta’s side, who recorded just their second win since the Spaniard took over at the club.

“We wanted to put draws into wins and the home form is going to be vital.

“It was a little bit slow and you can get frustrated but we started to manage the game better after 25 minutes, had a talk at halftime and improved in the second half.

“In the final third we were poor in the first 25 minutes,” Arteta said.

The defeat ended an eight-game unbeaten run for Newcastle and left manager Steve Bruce surprised with their defending.

“I didn’t see that coming in the second half. We gave bad goals away which isn’t like us.

“We usually don’t give much away. When that fourth goal happens you think it wasn’t our day,” Bruce said. (Reuters/NAN)

Newcastle United fight back to sink Bournemouth

Newcastle (UK), Nov. 9, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) Goals from DeAndre Yedlin and Ciaran Clarke helped Newcastle United recover from a goal down to beat Bournemouth 2-1 at St James’s Park on Saturday.

The win secured Newcastle’s back-to-back Premier League victories for the first time this season.

Bournemouth went ahead in the 14th minute with a brilliantly-worked corner as Harry Wilson made a looping run from the back post before hammering an unstoppable shot low to the keeper’s right.

Newcastle lost their captain and defensive lynchpin Jamaal Lascelles to injury shortly afterwards, but the home side began to create decent chances as they battled their way back into the game.

Yet to score for Newcastle, winger Allan Saint-Maximin hit the crossbar before his side levelled when his next shot was deflected.

Yedlin, who came steaming in at the far post,  headed home just before the break, but though the crowd went wild, his celebrations were muted.

“I was a bit nervous when they were checking VAR.

“It is hard to celebrate and then if you get caught offside you look a bit stupid, but thankfully in the end it was given as a goal,” he said.

Better known for his heading prowess, Irish international Ciaran Clarke let his feet do the talking seven minutes into the second half.

He scuffed the ball home for his second goal in two games to put his side ahead.

Newcastle weathered a late storm to hang on for a win that lifts them to 11th place in the table on 15 points after 12 games, while Bournemouth are a point ahead of them in 12th position.

“We had the initiative of the game but gave it away. I felt we should have kept the ball better, and we need to learn from it,” Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe told the BBC.

“We are looking for consistency, backing up a great win with another one and today we missed an opportunity. This result will really hurt for the next two weeks,” he added. (Reuters/NAN)

Ndidi scores as Leicester City thrash Newcastle United 5-0

Leicester (UK), Sept. 29, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) Nigeria’s Wilfred Ndidi capped a tremendous outing for himself on Sunday as Leicester City moved to third place in the English Premier League (EPL) after thrashing Newcastle United 5-0.

In spite of playmaker James Maddison missing out due to an ankle injury, Leicester City still got off to a great start.

Defender Pereira finished a surging run at the flat-footed Newcastle United defence by slotting the ball home in the 16th minute.

Whatever slim chance Newcastle United had of getting something out of the game quickly evaporated.

That was when midfielder Isaac Hayden was shown a straight red card just before half-time for a dangerous challenge on Dennis Praet.

James Vardy added the second in the 54th minute, latching on to a pass from Harvey Barnes to finish first-time with his left foot from a very tight angle.

It was more shambolic defending from Newcastle United as Paul Dummett deflected Praet’s shot into his own goal shortly afterwards.

Vardy stole in at the far post to head in the fourth goal from Marc Albrighton’s cross in the 64th minute.

Ndidi scored the fifth in the final minute of normal time.

The win lifts Leicester to third place on 14 points, ahead of their visit to Liverpool, while Steve Bruce’s side are second from bottom and will host Manchester United next.(Reuters/NAN)

Liverpool recover to beat Newcastle United, maintain perfect EPL start

Liverpool (UK), Sept. 14, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) Liverpool came from behind to earn a 3-1 home win over Newcastle United thanks to Sadio Mane’s first-half double and a late goal from Mo Salah on Saturday.

The win helped the Reds maintain their 100 per cent start to the season and winning their 14th consecutive Premier League match.

Anfield was stunned into silence in glorious sunshine on Merseyside as Newcastle’s Jetro Willems sent a thunderous strike into the top corner to give the visitors a shock seventh-minute lead.

The crowd were getting anxious as league leaders Liverpool were wasteful in possession, but the pressure never relented as Andrew Robertson set up Mane, who brilliantly equalised in the 28th minute.

Liverpool had won each of their previous four home league games in which they conceded first.

And 12 minutes later they had turned another match on its head as Roberto Firmino’s trickery set up Mane to give the hosts the lead at the second attempt.

Mane’s second strike meant Liverpool had scored two or more goals in 14 consecutive league games, equalling the Premier League record set by Manchester City in 2011.
Egyptian forward Salah added a third goal in the second half.

There was no coming back for Newcastle as Liverpool strolled to their fifth straight win this term to move five points clear of second-placed Manchester City.

Arsenal climb to third with victory over Newcastle United

London, April1, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) Goals from Aaron Ramsey and Alexandre Lacazette gave Arsenal a 2-0 win over Newcastle United on Monday.

The win lifted the north London side to third place in the Premier League above rivals Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United.

Ramsey found his way through a packed defence on the half hour following a sweeping move.

The Welsh midgkedmid found Lacazette and raced forward into the area to meet the return pass with a sweetly timed left-foot shot that went in off the far post.

Lacazette put the game to bed in the 83rd minute when Newcastle captain Jamaal Lascelles failed to clear a header into the area from Arsenal substitute Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

The Frenchman nipped in behind Lascelles and chipped an inch-perfect ball over keeper Martin Dubravka to seal the win.

The result put Arsenal on 63 points, two ahead of Spurs and Manchester United, with London rivals Chelsea a further point behind.

The win ensured that Arsenal keep alive their hopes of a top-four finish and qualification for Champions League football next season.

Perez double inspires remarkable Newcastle United comeback against inconsistent Everton

Newcastle upon Tyne (UK), March 9, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) Newcastle United produced a remarkable second half fightback to beat Everton 3-2 on Saturday for a fifth successive home win in the English Premier League (EPL) this season.

A goal from Salomon Rondon and a late double from Ayoze Perez completely transformed the game.

The home side initially felt aggrieved about going two goals down after a controversial first half incident.

First half goals from Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Richarlison seemed to be easing Everton’s path to victory.

But Newcastle United were left raging about the visitors’ England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, who could have been sent off on the half-hour.

Everton were leading through Calvert-Lewin’s 18th minute glancing header from Lucas Digne’s cross when Pickford, failing to punch the ball clear, clattered into Rondon and gave away a penalty kick.

No punishment was taken against Pickford, who then picked himself up to save Matt Ritchie’s 31st minute spot kick with his feet.

Richarlison then struck within 71 seconds at the other end before Newcastle United came on strong after the break.

In-form Rondon reduced the deficit in the 65th minute with his eighth of the season.

Perez then hammered his quick-fire double in the final 10 minutes of the match to help Newcastle United ease further clear of the relegation zone. (Reuters/NAN)

London, Feb. 2, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) Tottenham Hotspur’s Son Heung-Min scored his second goal in four days as the London side eventually saw off battling Newcastle United 1-0 at Wembley on Saturday.

The win ensured that the north London side leapfrogged Manchester City into second place in the Premier League.

Just when it looked like Spurs might be heading for their first draw of the season, Son fired a hopeful shot from outside the area.

The ball somehow crept under goalkeeper Martin Dubravka to take them within four points of Liverpool who play on Monday.

It was Son’s ninth goal in his past 10 appearances for Tottenham and a cruel blow for Newcastle who looked to have done enough to earn a point before the keeper’s howler.

Spurs missed a series of chances with Lucas Moura putting a straightforward header wide from six yards.

Erik Lamela also headed on to the post and Christian Eriksen’s flick somehow hooked off the line by Fabian Schar as Newcastle rode their luck.

But Mauricio Pochettino’s side had twice grabbed late winners in their previous league games with Fulham and Watford and Son got lucky when the chance finally came his way.

Newcastle, with record signing Miguel Almiron ineligible, had their moments on the breakaway with Salomon Rondon also heading on to a post.

EPL: Manchester City suffer title blow at Newcastle United

Newcastle (UK), Jan. 30, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) Reigning English Premier League (EPL) champions Manchester City suffered a shock 2-1 defeat at Newcastle United on Tuesday .

The result further swung the EPL title door wide open for leaders Liverpool, who take on Leicester City on Wednesday.

Manchester City had won their previous eight games in all competitions, scoring 33 goals in the process.

They looked on course to close the gap on Liverpool to one point when Sergio Aguero put them in front after 24 seconds at St James’ Park.

But Pep Guardiola’s side were nowhere near their fluent best and Salomon Rondon equalised after 66 minutes.

Matt Ritchie’s late penalty kick secured victory for Newcastle United and piled title pressure on Manchester City.

Wilson volley sinks West Ham, Newcastle United secure crucial win over Cardiff

Bournemouth (UK), Jan. 19, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) Bournemouth’s Callum Wilson smashed home a wonderful second half volley to give his side a much-needed 2-0 home win over West Ham United in their English Premier League clash on Saturday.

His strike partner Joshua King scored the second goal after Wilson gave the home side the lead with a thunderous volley in the 54th minute.

With West Ham attacking and Bournemouth content to play on the counter, Wilson almost got a second in the 71st minute.

But this time his first-time shot came off the foot of the far post and rolled to safety.

The visitors continued to leave space at the back as they desperately chased an equaliser.

And King was able to slot the ball into an empty net after a superb counter-attack to secure all three points for Bournemouth.

Elsewhere, Newcastle United moved out of the relegation zone and dropped Cardiff City into it.

An unlikely double by Fabian Schar earned them a crucial 3-0 victory at St James’ Park.

An afternoon that began with unpopular club owner Mike Ashley being booed by disgruntled home fans ended on a brighter note as Rafa Benitez’s side took maximum points.

It was Newcastle United’s third home win this season.

After five games without a league win, the visit of Cardiff had the feel of a key relegation battle and Schar’s 24th minute opener eased the tension around the ground.

Finding himself in an advanced position the Swiss international centre-back drove in from near the touchline and curled a superb shot past Cardiff goalkeeper Neil Etheridge.

It was Schar’s first goal for Newcastle United since joining from Spanish club Deportivo La Coruna.

And, having got the taste for it, he doubled his side’s lead when bundling the ball into the net from a Matt Ritchie corner just past the hour mark.

Cardiff offered little in response apart from the odd flurry and Schar was not far away from claiming a hat-trick when he headed off target from another Ritchie corner.

Ayoze Perez added some late gloss, tapping in Newcastle United’s third in stoppage time from Salomon Rondon’s cross.

Newcastle United climbed to 17th with 21 points, one place above the drop zone while Cardiff are in 18th spot, with 19 points.(Reuters/NAN)
