Kwara govt. shares in your pains, AbdulRazaq tells labour unions

Unions
By Afusat Agunbiade-Oladipo
Ilorin, Aug. 3, 2023 (NAN) Gov. AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq of Kwara says the state government has rolled out several measures designed to ease the inconveniences of fuel subsidy removal for its workers and the general public.
While addressing the labour unions who presented to him a protest letter over the subsidy removal, AbdulRazaq commended labour for its peaceful protest and aspirations as representatives of the Nigerian workers.
The governor, who was represented by Deputy Gov. Kayode Alabi, said the message from Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) was loud and clear, and would be delivered to President Bola Tinubu.
“We acknowledge that this is a tough moment for everyone and we share in the temporary pains of our people,”  the governor said.
He added that his administration empathises with the people and workers and would do more in addition to the moves already made by the state government to ease their pains.
AbdulRazaq explained that, as a palliative measure, grains were being purchased from the Federal Government and would soon be distributed to vulnerable households, including labour unions and affiliate organisations.
The list of beneficiaries, he said, would be inclusive and the process would involve all key stakeholders in the community.
The governor further confirmed the approval of the support for students and security agencies, which was built on what was earlier announced for all categories of workers in the state.
He said free transportation had earlier been arranged for tertiary students in the state.
“I call on the NLC to further support and work with government to implement key economic reforms for sustainable growth alongside specific palliatives, until things stabilise,” the governor said.
He urged NLC to bear with government and continue to hold talks so that everyone involved could pull through the phase in a way which would sustainably benefit the country.
“There may not be easy solutions, but Nigeria will come out of this stronger and better if everyone endures and works together,” AbdulRazaq added.
The State Chairman of NLC, Comrade Muritala Olayinka, said workers were facing a lot of challenges due to the removal of fuel subsidy.
He urged the state government to come quickly to the aid of the people in order to lessen the pains on the people and business concerns.(NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Coalition supports NLC protest

Protest
By Victor Nwachukwu
Owerri, Aug. 1, 2023 (NAN) The Coalition of South East Youth Leaders (COSEYL), a sociopolitical group, says it will mobilise its members to support the protest by the National Labour Congress (NLC).
The Group’s President-General, Mr Goodluck Ibem, and Public Secretary, Mr Okey Nwaoru, jointly said this in a statement made available to newsmen in Owerri, on Wednesday.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that the NLC has announced plans to protest the removal of fuel subsidy and the attendant economic hardship on workers.
The group said that Nigeria’s economy was dependent on fuel and other petroleum products to function and any decision or policy that increases the price of petroleum products would affect Nigerians.
“We shall support the protest,” the group said. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

We’re not responsible for power outage in Imo, EEDC tells customers

We’re not responsible for power outage in Imo, EEDC tells customers
Outage
By Victor Nwachukwu
Owerri, March 17, 2023 (NAN) The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) has clarified that it is not responsible for the  recent seven-day power outage in the State.
This is contained in a statement by the spokesperson of the Company,  Mr Emeka Ezeh, and made available to newsmen in Owerri, on Friday.
According  to him,  the clarification has  become necessary following the  misleading information trending on the  social and conventional media regarding a recent industrial action embarked upon by the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), which affected power supply in the state.
He said  that the strike  was at the instance of the NLC, over alleged “unprovoked disruption of the State Delegates Conference in Imo  by the Police and DSS, on the instruction of the State Government”.
He  said that the NLC had subsequently instructed its affiliate unions to direct their members in the state to withdraw services until further notice, effective from  March 8.
He added that it was against this backdrop that the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) station Owerri, which was the source of power supply, was shut down, thus affecting electricity distribution operations in Imo.
” The EEDC is a private enterprise committed to providing quality services to its customers, but the fact remains that it depends on other members of the electricity value chain to deliver services effectively and efficiently to its customers.
” This is something all stakeholders need to appreciate. For instance, there is no way EEDC can provide power supply to its customers when its source of supply, the TCN,  has been shut down.
” It is on record that EEDC issued a press statement, intimating its customers of the development.
“So, it will be unfair for any person or group to blame the EEDC for the industrial action.
” The industrial action equally had its own toll on the EEDC, as it recorded huge loss in revenue during the period and had some of its facilities attacked and vandalised, ” he said.
According to him, the EEDC is a responsible corporate organization committed to  ensuring that its customers were well served and should therefore not be seen to be a party to any act that would work against the interest of its customers.
” The EEDC is enjoying a very cordial relationship with the Imo  Government and will continue to ensure that this is sustained.
” We, therefore, implore our customers not to be deceived by any person or group and we assure them of our commitment to serving them.”( NAN) (www.nannews.ng)
