By Igbaugba Ehigimetor
Benin, Oct. 25, 2019 (NAN) No fewer than 8,500 athletes are expected to participate in the 20th edition of the National Sports Festival (NSF) tagged “Edo 2020’’, an official said on Friday in Benin.

Mike Itemuagbor, Chairman of the Marketing Sub-Committee of the festival’s Local Organising Committee (LOC), disclosed this at a joint meeting of the LOC’s Publicity and Communication and Marketing Sub-Committees.

He said the festival scheduled to hold from March 22 to April 1 would see the athletes competing for 3,000 medals from 33 sports.

“Athletes from the 36 states and the FCT are expected to participate in the festival, and the events will hold at 22 venues,’’ Itemuagbor said.

He then called for synergy between the Publicity and Communication Sub-Committee and the Marketing Sub-Committee.

“The Publicity and Communication Sub-Committee should use various platforms to sell the festival to the world,’’ Itemuagbor said, promising that nothing would be left to chance in the bid to ensure the best-organised NSF.

He said there was the need to understand that the media and marketing drive sports. “So, we must use our various platforms to propagate the Edo 2020 events,’’

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Edo had hosted the 1981 edition of the festival (then as Bendel) and the 2002 edition.(NAN)

By Monday Ajogun
Benin, Aug. 9, 2019 (NAN) The Edo Government on Friday in Benin said it has constituted 13 sub-committees and would soon unveil a Festival Ambassador for a successful hosting of the 2020 National Sports Festival (NSF).

The state’s Commissioner for Youths, Damian Lawani, told journalists shortly after an inaugural meeting of the 2020 NSF Local Organising Committee (LOC) that the sub-committees have settled down to work.

“Approval for the sub-committees was given at the inaugural meeting, and the committee (LOC) has been mandated to submit its work plan and budget for the festival and submit a work plan by the different sub-committees.

“The sub-committees include those of Finance, Venues and Facilities, Opening and Closing Ceremonies, Protocol, Accommodation and Hospitality, and Marketing and Sponsorship.

“The others are: Games Village Management, Transportation, Medical, Security, Feeding, Publicity and Communication, and Team Edo and Participation.

“The approval of the Ambassador for the festival was also discussed, and it was approved by the committee, and the Ambassador must be somebody who is very versatile in sports.

“He must be a role model to the youths, and he or she will be in charge of the advertisement. We are going to unveil the name of the Ambassador very soon,’’ Lawani said.

He added that the LOC would be meeting on a daily basis, if possible, to fine-tune the work plan and budget and present it to its Chairman, Philip Shaibu.

“I’m sure that, with this, Edo is ready to host the whole country,’’ the commissioner said.

He also disclosed that the official unveiling of the festival’s theme song would be on Sept. 19.(NAN)

Put your professionalism, wealth of experience at disposal of NSF 2020, Shaibu advises LOC members

Members
By Monday Ajogun
Benin, Aug. 9, 2019 (NAN) Edo Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu, on Friday advised members of the Local Organising Committee (LOC) for the 2020 National Sports Festival (NSF) to make available their professionalism and wealth of experience.

Shaibu, who is also the LOC Chairman, while speaking at their inaugural meeting in Benin, said this would help to ensure a successful hosting.

He assured that the government and people of the state were ready to give the festival a befitting hosting.

“You are all aware that our late icon, Samuel Ogbemudia, hosted the first edition of the festival, which was used to foster unity among Nigerians.

“Today, history is about to be made again. We are all aware of all the issues happening in our country. Therefore, Edo is ready to host a festival that will help foster unity and help us all to imbibe the spirit of oneness.

“It’s going to be the first NSF to be hosted by a state after a long break before the Federal Ministry of Youths and Sports Development reintroduced it in Abuja in 2018.
“So, there are a lot of things we need to put together to have a very memorable festival which will set new standards,’’ the deputy governor said.

He assured that Gov. Godwin Obaseki was ready to give Nigeria a befitting and historic hosting of the festival.

“At the end of the festival, we will all be united like when the festival started many years ago.

“So, I want to charge all of us to please put in our time and our intellect for this tournament. Remember it’s not about the festival alone, but about our great country.

“Edo is known for sports. This is where it all started, and we have never placed last, in terms of this tournament and history of sports,’’ Shaibu said.

He said a lot had been done to ensure Edo 2020, which is the festival’s 20th edition, was one of the best ever.

“You all know that our facilities are being upgraded, and new ones are being built. All this is to reintroduce what we are known for in terms of sports activities and youth engagement.

“We promise to engage our youths in different fields through the festival,” the LOC Chairman said.(NAN)
