NUC approves 6 new courses for NOUN

Abuja, March 23, 2020 (NAN) The National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) says that the National Universities Commission (NUC) has approved six academic programmes for the institution.

Mr Ibrahim Sheme, Director, Media and Publicity of NOUN in a statement on Monday in Abuja said that the approval was conveyed to the Vice-Chancellor Prof. Abdalla Adamu.

According to Sheme, the approval was contained in a letter dated March 19, 2020 and signed by Maryam Sali, NUC Director of Accreditation on behalf of the Executive Secretary.

He said that the programmes are; Accounting, Banking and Finance, Business Administration, Marketing, Public Administration and Hotel and Catering Management.

He said that implication of the status was that NOUN now has the mandate to run the programmes for five years.

“The NUC has the statutory mandate to accredit academic programmes in all universities; certificates issued to students admitted into unaccredited programmes are not recognised.

“The latest approval given to NOUN is sequel to the result of an NUC-organised accreditation visitation to the university in Abuja in October/November 2019.

“The result of the visit shows an impressive score for each of the six programmes from 78.7 per cent to 97.4 per cent,” Sheme said.

He noted that the vice chancellor was delighted with the approval.

According to him, the vice chancellors’ said that the development shows readiness of NOUN to fulfill its obligations as a centre of excellence in the Open and Distant Learning. (NAN)

MDCAN kicks against NUC’s circular on possession of PhD by members

Akure, March 2, 2020 (NAN) The Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria (MDCAN) has described as ‘obnoxious’ the circular by the National Universities Commission (NUC) on the use of PhD qualification for consultants for career progression.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that NUC had, on Dec. 24, 2019, issued a circular that vice chancellors must recognise possession of PhD as a prerequisite for career progression by all academic staff, including clinical lecturers.
The Vice Chairman of MDCAN in Ondo State, Mrs Omolayo Olubosede, at a press conference on Monday in Akure, said that the association rejected the circular in its entirety.
Olubosede said that NUC had no right to and should desist from meddling in the affairs of post-graduate medical training, which was in the purview of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria.
She said that a medical consultant needed not to have PhD because he/she had spent more years than what a PhD holder would have spent.
“We demand that NUC should desist forthwith from meddling in the postgraduate medical training, which is in the purview of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria.
Olubosede reiterated that MDCAN rejected the imposition of PhD on clinical lecturers.
“The Executive Secretary, NUC, has mentioned that possession of PhD is voluntary and optional and not making it mandatory for career progression for clinical lecturers.
“The NUC is trying to meddle in the postgraduate medical training in Nigeria, thereby usurping the powers of the National Postgraduate Medical College.
“MDCAN is not averse to the possession of PhD but should remain voluntary and optional for clinical lecturers.
“The NUC circular, if allowed to stand, will worsen the already precarious health situation in the country by encouraging continuous brain drain of our best from the University system,” she Said.
Olubosede called on the NPMCN to live up to its statutory powers of awarding degrees to postgraduate trainees.
She said that the national body of MDCAN had given NUC till Feb. 24 to withdraw the circular, which it failed to do, adding that members, who were clinical lecturers in the universities, had already withdrawn their services.
The MDCAN vice chairman said that the association in the state had already complied, as its members, who were clinical lecturers at the University of Medical Sciences (UNIMED) had since withdrawn their services. (NAN)

Abuja, Aug. 30, 2017 (NAN) The National University Commission (NUC) says it will partner with Gerontology Association of Nigeria (GAN) to harness the problem of the elderly in the society.
Malam Ibrahim Irodani’ya, the Deputy Executive Secretary of the commission, said this when members of the association’s Board of Trustee paid a courtesy visit to the commission on Wednesday in Abuja.
Irodani’ya said that it was a welcome idea to work with the association and stressed the need for identification of all members and having a comprehensive register for effective deliberation and ideas.
He also said the commission would promote the idea of the association through the inclusion of gerontology in university curriculum.
The Chairman of the association, Amb. Usman Saraki, said they would join hands with NUC to advocate for the welfare of elderly person’s in the society.
He said the association was established to create a platform where the needs of the elderly could be addressed.
He added that the association would collaborate with NUC in terms of creating a platform that would advocate the interest and welfare of elderly persons in the society.
According to him, ageing needs serious attention and social protection.
Saraki called for deliberate policies and effective implementation by the government as well as members of the society in the interest of the aged.
According to him, ageing is a natural process and preparation for ageing starts early in life when a person is intellectually sound as well as physically and mentally strong in order to prepare for it.
He appreciated the management of NUC over its commitment to collaborate with the association.
Dr Emem Omokaro, who is the convener of the visit, said the agenda of the association was to sensitise Nigerians on the need for care and provision of the aged needs in the society.
She said it was also geared towards making the populace understand ageing as well as the challenges of ageing.
She added that NUC and her foundation created spaces for research on ageing. (NAN)
