Yola, March 5, 2018 (NAN) The National Union of Road Transport Workers ( NURTW), Adamawa Chapter, in partnership with Society for Family Health (SFH), says it transported over 10,000 pregnant women to nearby health facilities in the state.
The state Chairman of the union, Alhaji Bello Adamu, disclosed this in an interview with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Yola on Monday.
Adamu said that the introduction of the Emergency Transport Scheme was to ease the hardship been experienced by pregnant women in villages, due to lack of access to health facility during labour.
“From 2015 to date, about 10, 000 pregnant women who were in labour benefited from the Emergency Transport Scheme by transporting them to nearby health facilities.
“Sixteen out of the 21 local government areas of Adamawa are involved in the scheme with two focal persons each,’’ Adamu said.
He explained that under the arrangement, pregnant women especially those in labour in remote areas were transported free of charge to health facilities for safe delivery.
He said under the programme, over 800 volunteer drivers from the state branch of the union were trained in 2016 under the scheme.
The chairman stated that the training was designed to enable the drivers to provide humanitarian services for pregnant women across the 21 local government areas of the state.
The participatory local government areas include Shelleng, Guyuk, Demsa, Numan, Gombi and Girei.
Others are Lamurde, Song, Jada, Yola-South and Hong as well as Fufore, Yola-North, Mayo-Belwa, Toungo and Ganye. (NAN)

Yola, Feb. 8, 2018 (NAN) Gov. Mohammed Bindow of Adamawa has promised to appoint 20 members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) as Special Assistants in his administration.
Bindow made the pledge while receiving members of the state chapter of the union who visited him on Thursday in Yola.

The governor also approved two slots each for both Christians and Muslims for pilgrimage.
“This is an all-inclusive government and l solicit collaboration with the union for efficient transport service delivery in the state,’’ the governor said.
Earlier, Alhaji Bello Adamu, the state’s Chairman of the union, called for the inclusion of the union members in the core administration of the state.
Adamu also appealed to the governor to make tents in motor parks to serve as shades for passengers and the union workers.
He said that the harsh temperature in the state posed a big challenge to commuters to patronise available motor parks.
The union leader commended the governor for his tremendous provision of road infrastructure in the state.
According to him, the union is the major beneficiary of the good road network across the state.
Adamu pledged their support to the present administration and promised to support the re-election bid of the governor. (NAN)

Birinin Kebbi, Oct. 6, 2017 (NAN) The Kebbi State Government says it is collaborating with the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) for emergency transportation of pregnant women and children under five years in the state.
The state Commissioner for Health, Alhaji Umar Kambasa, said this on Friday during the flag-off of distribution of health commodities and emergency transport scheme for pregnant women and children in the state in Birnin Kebbi.
“The Kebbi state government is to partner NURTW to reach out to 225 wards in all the 21 local government areas of Kebbi State which are out of reach due to their locations in riverine and mountainous areas,’’ he said.
Kambasa noted that the situation in those areas had claimed lives of many pregnant women and children due to inaccessible roads to the nearby hospitals.
He said: “It is also worthy of note that out of over 4,000 settlements in Kebbi State, 55% are hard-to reach based on their locations in riverine, mountainous, sandy or presence of gullies before accessing the settlements.’’
The commissioner disclosed that the state government is distributing drugs for the management of common ailments such as malaria, pneumonia, diarrhoea and meningitis as well as delivery beds, ante-natal care beds and baby beds, among others.
The state NURTW Chairman, Alhaji Garba Danmallam, commended the state government and UNICEF for collaborating with the union.
“We have trained 500 drivers across the state to transport emergency cases of pregnant women from rural to urban areas,” Danmallam said.
The Chief Field Officer of UNICEF in charge of Sokoto, Kebbi and Zamfara states, Mr Mohammad Muhiddin, disclosed that out of 50 million Euro donated for the states to care for child education and health, Kebbi state got the highest allocation of N4 billion.
According to him, all the equipment donated by UNICEF to health centres in the state are all imported from Japan, stressing that they are cutting edge equipment.
Gov. Abubakar Bagudu thanked UNICEF and other technical partners for their collaboration to ensure improved healthcare services in the state.
Bagudu however called for sustained support to achieve the desired goal. (NAN)

Agwada (Nasarawa State), May 24, 2017 (NAN) The National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Nasarawa State chapter, has advised motorists against over speeding and reckless driving to prevent accidents during the rainy season.

Alhaji Salihu Adamu, the state NURTW Chairman, gave this advice on Wednesday in an interview with newsmen after he paid homage to the Osu Agwada, Alhaji Abubakar Sadiq, in his palace at Agwada, Agwada Development Area of the state.

He said that the visit was to seek for his royal blessings and support to enable the union succeed.

Adamu also advised passengers to always call the attention of drivers while speeding, driving recklessly and overtaking wrongfully for their safety.

“Members of our union and motorists generally should always observe traffic rules and regulations and avoid reckless driving, speeding and wrongful overtaking to avoid unnecessary accidents especially now that rainy season has set in,’’ he said.

Adamu attributed the high rate of road crashes in the country to over speeding and reckless driving.

He, therefore, urged motorists to avoid speeding in the interest of their lives and the lives of other road users.

The chairman restated the commitment of the union to continue to sensitise its members in order to obey traffic rules and regulations as well as support government policies on transportation.

“We will not relent in our efforts in educating, advising and sensitising our members and other motorists on the need to do the right thing while driving, as we are working to minimise road crashes,” he added.

The chairman appreciated the people of the area for their support towards the activities of the union in the state and called for its sustenance.

Also speaking, Alhaji Abubakar Kana (APC-Kokona West) state constituency, expressed gratitude to the state leadership of the union for approving a branch of the union in the area.

He said that he would continue to collaborate with the members of the union in order to boost transportation system in the area and the state at large.

Earlier, Sadiq, who is the paramount traditional ruler of Agwada chiefdom, urged members of the union to continue to be law abiding and respect constituted authorities in the interest of peace. (NAN)
