NYCN passes vote of confidence on late President Shagari’s grandson, Bello

Owerri, May 6, 2019 ( NAN) The National Executive Council (NEC) of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) has passed a vote of confidence on its president, Mr Bello Shagari, in recognition of his leadership attributes.

Bello is the grandson of late President Shehu Shagari.

The Southeast Organising Secretary of the council, Mr Izunna Agwuncha made the disclosure in an interview with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Owerri on Monday.

 

Agwuncha said that the NEC passed the vote during its meeting in recognition of Shagari’s leadership attributes which he said had given the council a long desired facelift.

 

According to Agwuncha, the NEC identified Shagari’s leadership strengths to include his clear vision of the yearnings and aspirations of today’s youth, strong willpower and dogged defence of the NYCN constitution.

 

He said that these attributes had combined to earn the NYCN leader such awards as the Crans Montana new leaders of tomorrow 2019 award in Morocco and an award of excellence by the Abdulsalami Abubakar Institute for Peace and Sustainable Development.

 

Others are an honorary fellowship award by the governing council of the Institute for Security and Forensic Studies, Nigeria and  a recent appointment as coordinator of the Afro-Arab Youth Council.

 

The NEC however, called for improved autonomy for NYCN so as to enable its helmsman administered the affairs of the council with sincerity of purpose in total compliance with the NYCN constitution.

 

“The NYCN president has exemplified clear vision, sincerity of purpose, willpower and ability to defend the constitution of the council.

 

“Little wonder he bagged the most influential young Nigerian award in 2018 and a plethora of awards and recognitions across Nigeria and beyond.

 

“This is why I raised a motion for a vote of confidence on him at our National Executive Council (NEC) meeting on Friday and as expected, the NEC gave it a well deserved nod in agreement.

 

“At the same time, we call for improved autonomy for the council so as to reduce distraction and enable our president  focus on the pursuit of the general interests of the Youth in Nigeria”, he said. (NAN)

Be youth-friendly, NYCN urges Ihedioha

Owerri,  May 2, 2019 (NAN) Imo Chapter of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) has called on the state governor-elect, Mr Emeka Ihedioha, to carry the youth along when he is sworn-in.

The Council made the call when a delegation comprised of its State Executive Council (SEC) members paid a courtesy visit to the Director General,  Ihedioha Campaign Council, Dr Vin Udokwu, in his office in Owerri on Thursday.

Led by the Council’s Chairman in Imo, Mr Humphrey Osuji, the delegation felicitated with Ihedioha over his victory in the 2019 polls and presented Udokwu with an award of honour as “Imo youth icon of equity” in recognition of his role in carrying the youth along.

Presenting the award, Osuji said that the youth are usually associated with strength,  adventure, vision and impulsiveness and can either build or destroy a society, depending on their state of national orientation and corporate consciousness.

According to him, the main causes of woes associated with the youth range from poverty of the mind to bankruptcy of purposeful leadership.

He charged the governor-elect to harness talents yet untapped in the youth so as to distract them from vices, noting that the youth constitute 70 per cent of the entire population of Nigeria and over 80 per cent of voting population.

The Imo NYCN boss further stated that the Council was given a legal recognition in 1990 under the Companies and Allied Matters Act, Part C of the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as the umbrella body holding all youth organisations in the state.

”In the past, we have seen power hungry politicians take advantage of the high unemployment rate to recruit and misdirect youths so as to achieve their selfish agenda to the detriment of the masses.

”We, therefore, call on our governor-elect to ensure 50 per cent affirmative action for Imo youths in political appointments and to recognise the Imo chapter of NYCN by ensuring the release of our annual subvention from the state government,” he said.

In his response, Udokwu thanked the Council for their contributions toward the election of Ihedioha as governor and for identifying with the incoming administration.

The medical doctor expressed grief over the death of some youths during the 2019 elections.

He assured that the youth of Imo would heave a sigh of relief under Ihedioha, as the campaign team had continued to work assiduously toward the fulfillment of his campaign promises.

”Thank you for your support all through the elections and until now. It is highly unfortunate that some misinformed youths lost their lives in the process.

”I am delighted to inform you that the campaign team is still working to ensure that all our campaign promises are fulfilled and everyone including the youth will smile in the long run,” he said. (NAN)

NYCN official condemns manipulation of youth by politicians

Owerri, April 19, 2019 (NAN) A youth leader has condemned alleged manipulation of National Youth Council of Nigeria ( NYCN) by politicians and  advocated the inclusion of more young persons in governance.

 

Mr Izunna Agwuncha, the Southeast Publicity Secretary of NYCM, made the condemnation an interview with  News Agency of Nigeria ( NAN ) in Owerri on Friday.

 

Agwuncha, who identified one of the challenges facing youth leadership in Nigeria as the manipulation of youth bodies by the political class, said the trend posed a threat to the unity and progress of young Nigerians.

 

He decried the idea of restricting youths to the position of special adviser on youth affairs to the president and state governors and called for their active inclusion in policy formulation and decision making.

 

Agwuncha advised youth leaders to speak out on issues affecting the youth instead of sacrificing the well-being of the younger generation for selfish interests.

 

“The position of Nigerian youths in the Nigeria project is worrisome.

 

“As those  who will someday take over from today’s political elders, it is only imperative that  they be actively involved in decision making and policy formulation.

 

“As Nigeria prepares for her 59th independence anniversary, it is also worrisome that she is yet to boast of a youth house, more so when we have a fast growing population of over 80 million young persons.

 

“I call on my fellow youth leaders across the country to eschew sycophancy as a means to political relevance as this could render us incapacitated in the long run.’’

 

Agwuncha, however, lauded the leadership attributes of the NYCN National President, Mr Bello Shagari.

 

He described the NYCM president as “a leader with strong political will, proven integrity and strong political background who represents the overall interest of Nigerian youths”.

 

Agwuncha urged Nigerian youths to support the NYCN leader in the fight against sycophancy and selfishness within the council to prevent disunity and perpetual crisis in the organisation. (NAN)

Owerri, April 16, 2019 ( NAN ) National Youth Council of Nigeria ( NYCN), has advised the All Progressives Congress (APC) to cede key positions in the Ninth National Assembly to the South-East zone.

 

The council gave the advice through its Orlu Zonal Chairman, Mr John Nwaulu, who spoke to newsmen in Owerri on Tuesday.

 

Nwaulu, who was a former youth President of Imo State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (ISOPADEC), Ohaji/Egbema chapter, stressed that the leadership of the Ninth  National Assembly, should not be  hijacked.

 

He said that key positions in the National Assembly should be shared according to Federal Character principle, adding that it would promote national cohesion.

 

Nwaulu said that the  position of deputy senate president or speaker, House of Representatives, should be ceded to the zone to avoid any agitation. ( NAN )

NYCN felicitates with Buhari, advises FG on youth inclusion

Owerri, Feb. 28, 2019 (NAN) The National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), has congratulated President Muhammadu Buhari and Vice president Yemi Osinbajo on their reelection, and calls for a youth inclusive government.

 

NYCN made the call in its congratulatory message by its Southeast Publicity Secretary,  Mr Izunna Agwuncha, in Owerri on Thursday.

 

 

The group described the victory of Buhari and his vice, Osinbajo as well deserved, while calling for  youth inclusion in governance.

 

 

“NYCN also seized the opportunity to express its support to the Buhari-led government and we wish the president and his vice, a peaceful transition to the next level of good governance.

 

“This victory is well deserved and indeed a mandate of Nigerians.

 

“We are by this medium expressing our maximum support to your government and our readiness to partner with your office as our grand patron.

 

“This is in accordance with NYCN constitution in the areas of national youth development, formulation and execution of national youth policies for capacity building of Southeast youths and Nigerian youths in general.

Group condemns alleged killing of two youths, calls for violence free elections

Owerri, Feb. 11, 2019 (NAN) The National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), has expressed dismay over the alleged killing of two youths during a campaign rally at Ejemekwuru community in Oguta Local Government Area (LGA).

Mr Izunna Agwuncha, South East Organising Secretary of the council, made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), in Owerri, on Monday.

Agwuncha, who frowned at the development which occurred on Saturday, also seized the opportunity to state that the NYCN condemned all forms of violence in the buildup to the 2019 elections.

He called on all stakeholders in the electioneering process, especially monitoring teams and international observers to resist manipulative measures by politicians who were desperate for power.

Agwuncha, who is also the Imo chairman, Organisation for Drug Abuse and Violence Free Society, described youths as the most vulnerable group in the society.

He opined that Nigerian youths had suffered exclusion from the nation’s politics.

He further called on youths to steer clear of all forms of electoral malpractice, as according to him, ‘the outcome of the 2019 elections will shape the future of today’s youths’.

In his words, “we condemn all forms of electoral violence in the forthcoming elections. We call on election observers to say no to any effort to manipulate this year’s elections.

“As vulnerable as the youths are, they have suffered from the political stage and this anomaly has to be corrected.

 

“We, therefore, implore the youths to eschew all manner of electoral malpractice including thuggery, snatching of ballot boxes and vote buying.

“Let us see the 2019 elections as a litmus test, the result of which is capable of shaping our collective destinies as tomorrow’s leaders of this great country,” he said. (NAN)
