Marseille’s 14-game unbeaten streak ends with defeat by Nantes

Paris, Feb. 22, 2020 (Reuters/NAN) Second-placed Olympique de Marseille slumped to a 3-1 home defeat against Nantes as their 14-game unbeaten run in Ligue 1 ended after almost four months on Saturday.

Kader Bamba’s goal and Alvaro’s own goal, both in the second half, earned Nantes all three points.

Marseille’s midfielder Morgan Sanson had cancelled out Anthony Limbombe’s opener as the Provence side suffered their first defeat since they lost 4-0 at Paris St-Germain (PSG) on Oct. 27.

They trail leaders PSG who host Girondins de Bordeaux on Sunday by 10 points, but still lead third-placed Stade Rennais by 11 points before the Brittany side host Nimes on Sunday.

Nantes, who are 10th on 37 points, went ahead in the 35th minute when Limbombe beat Steve Mandanda with a diving header from Bamba’s cross.

Sanson levelled four minutes later with a superb volley from just outside the box in a highly disputed first half.

Bamba curled a splendid effort past Mandanda from the edge of the area to put the visitors back on top eight minutes into the second half.

One minute into stoppage time, Alvaro deflected Moses Simon’s attempt into his own goal.

Later on Saturday, fifth-placed Monaco will boost their UEFA Champions League hopes if they beat lowly Dijon away.(Reuters/NAN)

Ligue 1: Marseille cement second place with Toulouse win

Paris, Feb. 8, 2020 (Reuters/NAN) Olympique de Marseille consolidated second place in Ligue 1 as Dimitri Payet’s second-half strike gave them a 1-0 win over bottom side Toulouse on Saturday.

Payet struck six minutes into the second half to put Marseille on 49 points from 24 games.

They trail leaders Paris St Germain, who host Olympique Lyonnais on Sunday, by nine points.

Toulouse, who have suffered 17 league defeats this season, have 13 points. (Reuters/NAN)

Ligue 1: Marseille held again in Dijon stalemate

Paris, Sept. 24, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) Olympique de Marseille dropped points for the second game in a row when they were held to a goalless stalemate at bottom side Dijon in Ligue 1 on Tuesday.

The Provence side, who also shared the spoils against Montpellier last weekend, are fourth in the standings with 12 points from seven games.

They are three points behind leaders Paris St Germain ahead of the French champions’ home game against Stade de Reims on Wednesday.

Dijon, who had the best chance seven minutes into the second half when Bruno Ecuele-Manga’s header hit the post, have two points.

Ligue 1: Kalu sees red as Marseille beat Bordeaux in empty Stade Velodrome

Marseille (France), Feb. 5, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) Olypique de Marseille boosted their hopes of qualifying for European football by beating Girondins Bordeaux 1-0 at home in an empty stadium in Ligue 1 on Tuesday.

The Ligue 1 side however benefitted from Samuel Kalu being sent off midway through the first half.

Teenage defender Boubacar Kamara scored shortly before halftime, nudging the ball in from close range for his first Ligue 1 goal.

It was shortly after Bordeaux  winger Kalu had been dismissed for a two-footed lunge on Lucas Ocampos.

The game was played in near silence as Marseille have been ordered to play all games at their Stade de Velodrome behind closed doors until further notice.

The decision serves as a punishment for fans throwing firecrackers on to the pitch in a 2-1 home defeat by Lille last month.

Mario Balotelli was forced to watch from an empty stand as he was ineligible from playing in the rescheduled game.

The original tie was due to take place in December when Balotelli was still a Nice player, but was called off for security reasons due to a demonstration by ‘Yellow Vest’ protesters.

Marseille’s Morgan Sanson nearly doubled their lead right before the interval when he struck a post while Bordeaux substitute Francois Kamano hit the crossbar in the second half.

Winger Bouna Sarr looked to have made sure of victory for the home side when he netted in stoppage time but the goal was ruled out for offside after a lengthy video assistant referee (VAR) review.

But the fulltime whistle soon followed, confirming a result which rarely looked in doubt and took Marseille up to seventh in the standings on 34 points, leaving Bordeaux in 12th. (Reuters/NAN)

Marseille knocked out by amateurs in French Cup shock

Saint-Etienne (France), Jan. 5, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) Olympique de Marseille crashed out of the French Cup in sensational style on Sunday when fourth division amateurs Andrezieux beat them 2-0 on a weekend of shocks for big clubs.

Andrezieux’s ground was so small that they moved the game to nearby Saint-Etienne but even without home advantage they were too good for their more illustrious opponents.

The defeat extended Marseille’s winless run to seven matches in all competitions but they were not the only Ligue 1 side who failed to advance to the last 32.

On Saturday, Montpellier, currently riding high in the league in fourth place, conceded in stoppage time to lose 1-0 at third-tier side Entente SSG.

Angers also lost to an amateur side, beaten 1-0 by Viry-Chatillon, while Nimes Olympique were hammered 3-0 by Lyon Duchere.

Among the Ligue 1 clubs who did manage to qualify for the next round were Olympique Lyonnais, who beat lower league Bourges 2-0, and Stade de Reims, who beat Lens by the same scoreline.

Bottom club Guingamp won 4-2 away at Stade Pontivyen, while second-bottom AS Monaco also got a rare win, knocking out Canet Roussillon 1-0 away from home.
