Akeredolu appoints Saraki’s ex-aide as monarch

Akure, March 24, 2020 (NAN) The Ondo State government has approved the appointment of Prince Adewunmi Ogunmolasuyi as the Olupenmen of Upenmen in Owo Local Government area.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the monarch, was a Senior Legislative Assistant (SLA) to former Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki between 2015 and 2019.
His appointment was among the three ratified by the State Executive Council, presided over by Gov. Oluwarotimi Akeredolu.
Others, whose selections were ratified included Prince Olorunsola Akinyelure as Odogbo of Ode Omi in Irele council area and Prince Oloyede Adeyeoba as the Arujale of Okeluse in Ose council area.
Briefing newsmen shortly after the meeting, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Lola Fagbemi, said that Ogunmolasuyi’s appointment followed unanimous election by kingmakers in the community.
Fagbemi, who was joined by his Information counterpart, Donald Ojogo, said that the ratification was arrived at after hours of deliberations by the council.
Ogunmolasuyi, a 47-year-old Mass Communication and Journalism graduate from the Nigeria Institute of Journalism (NIJ), emerged the town’s new monarch on Sept. 10, 2019, after polling all the five available votes from the kingmakers to beat his only challenger, Prince Olawole Folarin, who had no vote.
The election was supervised by Mr Segun Omojuwa, the Director of Local Government Administration in Owo local government council.
NAN reports that the new monarch, an associate member of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), is from the Ayiwoye Akinola ruling house.
It would be recalled that the Olupenmen stool became vacant in August 2017 after the demise of Oba Samuel Ademulegun. (NAN)

Police confirm abduction of 2 NPFL players in Ondo

Akure, March 23, 2020 (NAN) The Ondo State Police Command has confirmed the abduction of two players of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) by gunmen on Benin-Akure Expressway on Sunday evening.

The players are Dayo Ojo of Eyimba FC and Iluyomade Benjamin of Abia Comets FC.

The State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP Tee-Leo Ikoro, who confirmed the incident to newsmen in Akure, said the Police were already on the trail of the hoodlums.

Ikoro said one of the players, who managed to escape, has been rescued by officers of the State Police Command.

“We have been able to rescue one of the players and our men are already in the bush after the kidnappers.

“I will get the details of the incident as soon as I get the information from the Divisional Police Officer of Ipele Owo,” the PPRO said.

NAN gathered that the two abducted players were on their way to their base in Akure from Owerri , after a holiday was declared for virtually all NPFL players following the outbreak of the Coronavirus pandemic in the country.

The duo, who were former players of the Sunshine Stars FC of Akure, were kidnapped at Ipele town on Benin-Akure Expressway in Owo Local Government Area of the state. (NAN)

Sunshine Stars condole with Plateau United over Pele’s demise

Akure, Feb. 13, 2020 (NAN) The management of Sunshine Stars FC of Akure has condoled with the management of Plateau United on the demise of their Chief Coach, Audu Pele.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Pele died in his home in Kazaure on Wednesday, during a brief illness and has been buried according to Islamic injunction.
The team’s condolence message was contained in a statement issued by their Media Officer, Chris Okunnuwa, on Thursday in Akure.
Okunnuwa said that the Chairman of Ondo State Football Agency (ODSFA), Tajudeen Akinyemi, expressed shock over the demise of the coach.
“This is so unfortunate; so sad to hear this. Losing a hardworking coach this way will always be difficult to bear; but, this is what we humans don’t have control over; we must always accept the superiority of God.
“I know his contributions to the club will forever be appreciated, and that is something his family can always take solace in.
“We share the sense of grief of this great loss,” he said. (NAN)

Policeman killed as arsonists burn worship house in Akure

Akure, Dec.18, 2019 (NAN) A policeman and an unidentified person were killed on Wednesday as suspected arsonists burnt down a worship house, Sotitobire Miracle Centre, in Oshinle area of Akure.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that there had been tension in the area over the reported disappearance of a one year-old boy, Gold Kolawole, at the worship house on Nov. 10.

Mr Femi Joseph, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in Ondo State confirmed the killing of a policeman and an unidentified person while speaking with NAN on Wednesday.

The killings came as irate youths set ablaze the worship house and a vehicle following reports that the corpse of the missing boy was exhumed from the worship house.

NAN reports that the billboard of the worship house at another branch in  Oba Ile area of Akure was also pulled down.

Kolawole, according to reports, was last seen in company with his parents  at a programme held at the worship house  on Nov.10 at about 11:30 a.m.

NAN also reports that the founder of the church, Alfa Babatunde,  was arrested by the Department of State Services on Dec. 8 following a petition written by the parents of the missing boy.

Joseph had in an earlier statement on Wednesday dismissed reports that the corpse of the missing Kolawole was exhumed inside the worship house.

“It is most unfortunate that this misleading information spearheaded by a popular TV station has ignited spontaneous reactions from the people leading to wanton destruction of properties and injuries to many.

“The church building was  also set ablaze by irate youths. Some of our officers despatched to the scene to contain the situation were pelted with stones  with many of them sustaining injuries.

“Their patrol vehicle was also badly damaged,” Joseph had said in the statement.

Joseph called on the public not to be hoodwinked  by reports that the command had abandoned the investigation of the incident, saying the case file was already on the way to the DPP for legal advice.(NAN)

Ondo State Govt. to partner with NGOs on sports development

Akure, Nov. 12, 2019 (NAN) Mr Dotun Owanikin, the Ondo State Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, has reiterated the readiness of the state government to partner with Non- Governmental Organisations for the development of sports in the state.

Owanikin expressed this commitment while receiving members of the National Association of Women in Sports (NAWIS), Ondo state chapter on Tuesday in his office in Akure.

Owanikin said the government was willing to always support sincere motives that would help promote sports in the state, admonishing the association to be resilient in achieving its goals.

According to him, partnering with private organisations and individuals is the new way to develop sports in this current dispensation.

He stressed that the association needed to work assiduously to discourage doping and age cheating among athletes and imbibe the culture of talent-hunt among the young ones.

The commissioner, therefore, urged the group to promote inter school sports at the primary and secondary school levels in order to catch them young in their localities.

“This is our concern. We have to do the needful to develop sports and assist the youth with all our efforts even in the face of paucity of funds.

“As a ministry, we are there to assist you to achieve your noble goals but you need to be selfless in promoting sports and avoid over-reliance on government for funding,” he said.

Earlier, the president of the association, Princess Adejoke Adebusoye, said they were at the ministry to seek the support of the state government to achieve its objective of promoting sporting activities.

She listed the objectives to include, promoting morals, good conducts as well as encouraging athlete’s development and education.

Adebusoye, who laued the performance of the state representatives at the 2019 National Youth Sports Festival in Ilorin, urged the ministry to build on that feat of 7th position in the forthcoming festival in Benin, Edo in 2020.

She, therefore, called for the commissioner’s support towards achieving NAWIS aims and objectives and hosting of its forthcoming National Conference in December.

Adebusoye added that the association was yet to be represented at the National Sporting Federation due to its absence at the national forum and paucity of funds. (NAN)
