Supreme Court ruling on Osun affirms will of people – S/West APC, Fayemi

Ado Ekiti, July 5, 2019 (NAN) Gov. Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti State has congratulated his Osun state counterpart, Gboyega Oyetola, over Supreme Court judgment that affirmed his (Oyetola’s) victory as the validly elected governor of the state.
Reacting to the ruling on Friday, Fayemi described it as an affirmation of the people’s will, “as expressed through their votes in the 2018 governorship election in the state”.
The governor who said this in a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr Olayinka Oyebode, also congratulated the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the people of Osun for remaining calm and optimistic all through the judicial process.
He urged Oyetola to be magnanimous in victory and extend a hand of fellowship to his opponents in the bid to move the state forward.
“It is a great day for democracy. The highest court in the country has finally settled the controversies surrounding the Osun governorship election and affirmed Governor Oyetola as the true winner of the election
“Hearty congratulations to my brother Governor, Oyetola. A bigger congratulations to the people of Osun State, who are the real winners in the context,” he said.
Fayemi said he was convinced that Oyetola would take the state to the next level of development and prosperity, given his pedigree “as an astute manager of men and resources and as a leader who has genuine passion for development”.
Similarly, the South West leaders of the APC have hailed the outcome of the case.
The party noted that the judgment showed that President Muhammadu Buhari’s determination of ridding the nation’s judiciary of manipulative tendencies is yielding results.
In a statement in Ado Ekiti, Chief Karounwi Oladapo, the South West Zonal Publicity Secretary of APC, said the victory would stop further distractions in Osun state and brighten the chances of the party in the zone. (NAN)

OAUTH performs 70 open heart surgeries in 2 years – CMD

Ile-Ife (Osun) April 24, 2019 (NAN) The Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital (OAUTH), Ile-Ife, Osun, has performed 70 open heart surgeries in the last two years.

Prof. Victor Adetiloye, the Chief Medical Director (CMD) of OAUTH , made the disclosure at a news conference on Wednesday  in Ile-Ife, Osun.

Adetiloye said the hospital was the first to have achieved such laudable heart surgeries in the country.

The CMD also said the hospital had performed 600 pin-hole surgeries and first in West Africa to perform ‘Double Switch’ procedure surgery in children.

According to  him,  the hospital also performed 100 total knee and Hip replacement in the last four years and 75 Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangio-pancreatography (ERCP) procedures in the last one year.

“The hospital had performed nine Renal Transplant and 1,000 Endoscopy procedures.

” All these have been made possible under a peaceful atmosphere devoid of strike actions and the commitment of our members of staff and various unions,’’ Adetiloye said.

The CMD, however, expressed sadness over lack of awareness of successful surgery operations in the hospital.

He said it was saddening that many people still travel abroad for surgeries, spending huge amount of money while they could spend less for the same in the hospital.

The CMD solicited for media support in creating awareness on the various successful surgeries in the hospital to minimise medical tourism.

Adetiloye commended the efforts of the Federal Government in providing funds for the hospital to acquire necessary equipment to perform the feat. (NAN)

Abuja, Sept. 22, 2018 (NAN) The Network of Civil Society Organisations of Nigeria (NCSON) has commended the electorate for conducting themselves peacefully in the ongoing governorship election in Osun State.
The National Coordinator of the group, Mr Kalu Victor, made the commendation in a telephone interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Saturday.
He said apart from minor conflicts recorded at some polling booths which were immediately brought under control, the election had so far been peaceful.
“We are waiting for the last minute of voting. So far, it has been peaceful, although we recorded some skirmishes in a few areas like in Ward 9, Polling Unit 3 and Polling Unit 4 in Ile Ife but normalcy was later returned,’’ he said.
The coordinator also commended the presence of security agents and the Independent National Electoral Commission for equally conducting themselves well, giving the electorate the confidence to turn out en mass to vote.
He said: “We must also give it to security agencies.
“Based on observations and recommendations from various stakeholders, especially observer groups that monitored previous elections, they have to a large extent improved in their conduct.
“If they continue to reduce any form of overzealousness then we will not have fears for subsequent elections.
“INEC has also improved on some of the flaws witnessed in Ekiti State election and other previous elections.’’
On vote buying, Victor said the level of vote buying recorded in Ekiti state was not witnessed in Osun state.
He said though vote buying was not evident at the polling units, they observed people handing gift items to electorate few kilometers away from polling units.
He commended INEC for taking up the campaign against vote buying as observed by stakeholders, adding that the campaign is having positive effect.
However, he called on the electorate and other stakeholders to continue to conduct themselves peacefully during collation and announcement of results. (NAN)

Abuja, Sept. 10, 2018 (NAN) The All Progressives Congress (APC) says it will re-open the sale and submission of nomination forms for election into the Osun State House of Assembly from Sept. 24 to Sept. 26.
The party announced this in a statement issued by Mr Yekini Nabena, its National Publicity Secretary, on Monday in Abuja.
This, he said, was to avoid distractions and to ensure full participation of the party’s supporters and members in the forthcoming Osun governorship elections scheduled for Sept. 22.
He added that screening of the legislative aspirants from the state would commence on Oct. 2 through Oct. 6. (NAN)

Osogbo, May 26, 2018 (NAN) No fewer than 1,700 public school pupils in Osun on Saturday commemorated the 2018 Children Day with calisthenics display.
The calisthenic, which was colourfully displayed by the pupils, was watched by Prof. Isaac Adewole, the Minister of Health; Gov. Rauf Aregbesola and his cabinet members, school children, teachers and traditional rulers, among others.
Addressing the children, Aregbesola said that the state government would continue to give priority to education.
The governor, who described children as leaders of tomorrow, said government had been providing enabling environment for them to excel in their academic pursuits.
Aregbesola said that his administration had made extra ordinary efforts in building new schools with school feeding programme.
The governor said that his administration was doing all these to lay good foundation for the children, noting that they needed to move with technology advancement.
Aregbesola also urged parents to give their children proper upbringing, saying proper education should start from home.
The governor thanked teachers for their efforts in giving their best to the pupils.
While congratulating the children for the celebration, Aregbesola said that his administration would continue to make them happy. (NAN)

Ile-Ife (Osun), March 16, 2016 (NAN) The Federal Government on Thursday renewed its commitment to restoring peace and sanity in all parts of the country.

The Minister of Interior, retired Lt.-Gen. AbdulRaman Dambazau, said this at the Ooni of Ife’s palace after a visit to the Sabo area of Ile-Ife.

This followed a crisis that ensued between Yoruba and Hausa communities on March 8.

He said: “I am part of Ile-Ife. Even late Oba Okunade Sijuwade who was the closest friend of the late Emir of Kano, Alhaji Ado Bayero, confirmed that I schooled in South West.’’

The however said that he was shocked and confused when he learnt of the dispute between Ife and Hausa communities, saying it has not been so from ages past.

“I know Ile-Ife as a land of peace, accommodating strangers, friendly and loving other ethnics, so I wonder how such incident could occur,” Dambazau said.

Dambazau attributed to the crisis to criminals and not the Ife or Hausa communities, adding that the strife had no tribal or religious coloration.

He called for a peaceful coexistence, saying “all we want in all communities is peace, for without peace, we cannot sleep nor slumber, for without peace, there cannot be any development”.

While urging all to join hands and fish out the perpetrators, the minister said the bad eggs, once identified, would not go unpunished to serve as a deterrent to others.

Dambazau commended the efforts of the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, and host Gov. Rauf Aregbesola, over the matured way they managed the crisis.

He also appealed to other Nigerians to desist from acts likely to lead to violence and loss of lives and properties across the country.

Earlier, the President, Ife Progressive Forum, Mr Olajide Awowoyin, had welcomed the minister while acknowledging his good posture towards the cradle of the Yoruba.

Awowoyin also described Ile-Ife as a land of peace and love, assuring the minister that no more war or crisis would occur in the land.

He however condemned what he described as one-sided arrests, saying that justice needs to be upheld in solving the crisis in the area.

Also, the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, who was represented by his second-in-command, Oba Idowu Adediwura, the Obalufe of Ife, lauded the minister for coming to share in Ife’s agony and pains inflicted by miscreants.

Ogunwusi described the incident as saddening and regrettable not just for Ife indigenes but the entire Yoruba race.

The Ooni also said that normalcy has returned to the land and that peace would follow.

In the same vein, Aregbesola, who was represented by his deputy, Mrs Titilayo Laoye-Tomori, observed that the Hausa people had been living in Ife since 1824 and that several generations of them were actually born there.

The governor condemned a section of the media for misinterpreting the misunderstanding between two individuals as a fracas between Hausa and Yoruba.

He therefore appealed for peaceful coexistence in the land, promising that with the crisis over, the state government will provide succour to the victims. (NAN)

Osogbo, March 15, 2017 (NAN) The National President of Traditional Medical Practitioners of Nigeria, Mr Sakariayau Oyedeji, has commended the Osun Government for constituting the State Traditional Medical Practitioners Board.

Oyedeji, in a statement made available to newsmen in Osogbo on Thursday, said the step taken by the state government would go a long way in enhancing and promoting indigenous healing in the state.

He said the initiative would also foster healthy living among the residents as well as enhancing government health policies towards quality healthcare delivery.

While assuring the state government of the association’s robust collaboration and partnership, Oyedeji also pledged the group’s support to boost internally generated revenue for the government.

“We recognise the huge investment made by the state to revitalise health sector with the sole aim of ensuring healthy living through the provision and promotion of quality healthcare facilities given freely to all and sundry in the state.

“We are equally aware that the moribund state of the health sector in the state prior to this administration had been resuscitated through timely and prompt government intervention.

“But the central point of this is the constitution of Board of Traditional Medical Practitioners in the state which we view as right step to uplift indigenous healing of our people across the nooks and crannies of the state.

“This step, to us, would in no measure contribute significantly to quality healthcare delivery and as well help the Board to support the state government efforts in improving its revenue,” the statement read in part. (NAN)
